SNYDER ROBERT W. Fondly known as Sparky, a Moon Township resident since 2003, formerly of Coraopolis, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at Masonic Village Sewickley. He was born in Coraopolis on March 25, 1936, to the late Jessie E. (Mobberley) and Glen Snyder. He married his beloved wife of 59 years on Dec. 30, 1955, Mary “Lou” (Barwell) Snyder. Loving father of Dawn Millorino (Robert), Tim Snyder (Sue), Mark Snyder (Barbara), Kelly Giannandrea (Ron) and Tami Chamberlain (Jay), all of Moon Township; grandfather of Mikayla, Zachary, Tim, Jr. (Kristin), Courtney (Adam), Amber, Mark, Jr. (Erica), Mallory (Michael), Jenna (Dave), Nick, Leah, Cory, Melissa and the late Kirk and Neil; great-grandfather of Dominick, Jordan, Mylee, Payton and Lainey; stepbrother, Keith Anderson of the North Hills. A retired truck driver for RB & W, Sparky was a 1954 graduate of Coraopolis High School where he had excelled in Basketball. His love of sports led him to play on Segneri's Championship Softball Team as well as coach softball and baseball for Pony League. He was a member of Mooncrest Baptist church, Coraopolis Moose, GBU and Valley Vets. Full of love and joy, he was a kind, gentle man who always had a joke to share. Daughter of the late Glenn and Patricia Bernauer of McCandless Township. She is survived by her sister, Leslie Bernauer-Crispens of Virginia; as well as her children, Alexandra, Vincent and Harley. Besides being a selfless and giving mother, she was also a sweet, loving grandmother to granddaughters, Baleigh, Bella and Klover-Mae; as well as grandsons, Liam James and Kamden. LEAHY J. BLAIR, Jr. Age 88, of Wexford, on Wednesday, April 15, 2015. Beloved husband of Lois M. Froehlich Leahy for 64 years; dear father of Shelia Siegal (Bruce) of Tennessee, James of Wexford and Mark of Virginia; grandfather of James, Jr., Katie, Rachel, Bridgette and the late Lori; great-grandfather of Collier; also survived by one brother; three sisters; and predeceased by two brothers. Blair was an active member of the Knights of Equity since 1947. He was named Pittsburgh Irishman of the Year in 1982. He was presented the Manifesting the Kingdom award by the Most Reverend Bishop David A. Zubik in 2009. Blair was a member of Knights of Columbus #3907 where he was a past Grand Knight. He was also a former Marshall Township Supervisor. He was a WWII Navy veteran, Pacific Theater. Blair was a member of the American Legion Post #161. KOSARICH ELIZABETH Age 89, of Stowe Twp., formerly of Bellevue, on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. Beloved mother of Darlene Cubic, Kathleen Kosarich; loving wife of the late Harry Kosarich; also survived by nieces and nephews. Betty led a very full and interesting life. She was trained by the government in her early years to be Rosie the Riveter but her dad said no to her accepting employment. As a birthday gift Harry set up an interview at McSorley's Restaurant as a waitress. When the Hilton Hotel was built downtown she was hired as a waitress. She had found her niche. Betty was also a world traveler. She walked the entire path of Christ, rode a camel to the pyramids in Egypt, went sailing on a catamaran in Hawaii and gambled in Vegas. When she retired she toured England and Scotland, but she wasn't done traveling yet. Now she can just look down on the entire planet to see anything she missed. Friends received Monday 1 p.m. until time of services at 6 p.m. at the VALERIAN F. SZAL FUNERAL HOME, 238 Helen St., Mckees Rocks. FERGUSON MARY ANNE (HEYWARD) Professor Mary Anne Ferguson died Thursday, April 9, 2015, at her home in Pittsburgh, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Stephen Carr. She was born July 25, 1918, in Charleston, SC, daughter of William and Anne (Walker) Heyward. She lived in Asheville, NC for her high school years, received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from Duke University, and her Ph.D. from Ohio State University. Both she and her husband, Alfred R. Ferguson (who died in 1974), were professors of English at Ohio Wesleyan University, Ohio State, and as founding professors at U. Mass/Boston. She was one of the pioneers of the field of Women's Studies, working on national commissions, curricular projects, and as editor of a path-breaking anthology, Images of Women in Literature (1973-1991). She leaves three daughters and what she liked to call "sons-in-love," Margaret Ferguson and David Simpson of Davis, CA, Jean and Stephen Carr of Pittsburgh, and Lucy and Phil Tenenbaum of Rutland; seven grandchildren, Nate and Kerrie Allen, Maggie (Carr) and Paul Larkin, Suzanna Ferguson, Ruthie Tenenbaum, Julia Carr, and Marianne and Christina Simpson; and two great-grandchildren, Charlie and Nell Allen. Memorial Services will be in Pittsburgh, PA at Calvary Episcopal Church, and ashes will be buried in Scituate, MA with Alfred's, on what would have been his 100th birthday. REED DAVID CHARLES “DAVE” Known as “Dave” to friends and family, passed away on April 1, 2015, at the age of 64. Born January 13, 1951, to Thomas H. and Maguerite B. Reed. David resided in Shaler Township, a suburb of Pittsburgh, until he attended Lehigh University earning a degree in business with honors in 1973. After college, he worked as an auditor with Arthur Young where he became a CPA. David moved to Commodities Corporation in 1979, where he took the position of vice president and controller. In 1989, he helped to establish and manage a Japanese/U.S. joint venture for Commodities Corporation in futures trading with offices in Tokyo and Singapore. During this time, he and his family lived in Tokyo for three years. In 1998, David left Commodities Corporation and became co-founder and CEO of Mapleton Nurseries in Kingston, NJ. Mapleton is a wholesale nursery specializing in container grown native and ornamental trees and shrubs. At the time of his death and for more than ten years prior thereto, David served on the board of directors of 1st Constitution Bank, where he chaired the Audit Committee. Additionally, he was serving as a director of both Arden-Sage Multi-Strategy TEI Fund and Arden-Sage Multi-Strategy Fund. More recently, he also became a trustee of two alternative mutual funds sponsored by Arden Asset Management, LLC in New York. Some of David's favorite memories involved his years in the Boy Scouts of America, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. All three of his sons, Thomas, Michael, and Mark were boy scouts in Troop 43, Princeton, where David stayed active in scouting as a member of the Troop committee, as well as offering the use of his personal workshop and his expertise in woodworking to help many scouts with their own Eagle Scout projects. His wife, Dolores Elder Reed; his sons, Thomas, Michael, and Mark; and his mother, Marguerite Bettegar Reed, survive David. Also surviving are two brothers, Robert, his wife, Mary, and Arthur, his wife, Joellen; a niece, Katie and her husband, Dustin Schron; his wife's twin sister, Marianne, and her husband, Dr. Richard Altenbaugh; and nephews, Ian and Colin; as well as sister-in-law, Ruth Woodside, and her three sons, Danny, David, and Benjamin Elder, also survive him. Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, may be made to BSA Troop 43, Nassau Presbyterian Church, Princeton, NJ or Lehigh University's Thomas H. ZAVADA ESTELLE Age 71, passed away peacefully Monday, April 13, 2015, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Estelle was born on March 31, 1944, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to William and Anna Gregg. She lived most of her life in the Pittsburgh area and retired in Colorado Springs. She was a Cardiac Nurse at Central Medical in downtown Pittsburgh and upon retirement she was very active in her community and loved to bake and cook. She was known by all of her family and friends as "Bunny". Bunny was preceded in death by her father, William Gregg; and her brother, Bill Gregg. She is survived by her mother, Anna Gregg; and brother, Ernie Gregg; and her children, John Zavada and Gregg Zavada. Bunny's family is deeply grateful to the wonderful caregivers that provided exceptional care over the years. Memorial Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2015, in the chapel at the Salvation Army at 910 Yuma Street in Colorado Springs. HANNI ROSELLA (GIUNTA) Age 93 years, Rosella died Sunday, April 12, 2015, at Independence Village of Frankenmuth, MI. She was born to Anthony and Nancy (Franze) DiGirolamo on April 1, 1922, in Pittsburgh, PA, where she resided most of her lifetime. Rosella's life was her family and she loved spending special times with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a “mother to so many” as she shared her tender care and knowledge to all who were acquainted with her. Additionally, Rosella enjoyed reading and an occasional visit to the casino. She was united in marriage to Anthony Giunta, who preceded her in death, and then later married Richard Hanni, who also predeceased her. Surviving family members include two daughters, Nancy Zapolski (Thomas) and Rozanne Giunta (Norman Monto); four grandchildren, Scott Monto (Ashley Jericho), Mark Monto (Tayyaba), Kristen Hetzel-Homann (Jason), and Bre Hetzel-Nugent (Matthew); three great-grandchildren, Ayden Monto, Austin Snyder, and Samantha Homann; along with two brothers, Jack and Sam DiGirolamo. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Monday, April 20, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. in the Church of the Assumption, 45 N. Sprague Avenue, Bellevue, PA. The family will be present at the church after 10:00 a.m. to gather in fellowship with relatives and friends to share fond memories of Rosella. FLEMING JOSEPH W. Age 87, of Cranberry Twp., formerly of McCandless Twp., died on Monday, April 13, 2015, in Sherwood Oaks. Beloved husband of Brenda (Mimi Goetz); loving father of John A., and James C.; doting grandfather of Morgan and Marissa; he is survived by his siblings, Ruth (Van Kirk), Martha (Murray), and Jay; and was preceded in death by his brother, William. Joe was born in West Newton, PA and was a graduate of West Newton High School in 1946 and Penn State in 1951. He worked as a chemical engineer for Koppers Co. for over 30 years at various chemical plants across the eastern U.S. During the Korean war, he was in the Chemical Warfare section of the Army from 1953 until 1956 at the Army's Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland. While in the Army he obtained his private pilot's license. He holds several patents granted to him personally for chemical and mechanical processes. Joe was an avid bridge player developing his own bidding system. No visitation please. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on April 25, 2015, at Sherwood Oaks.
