PATTERSON MICHAEL D., Sr., M.D. Age 59, of McCandless Twp., unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Beloved husband of Sarah Ann (Grandy) Patterson; father of Michael, Jr., Darryl (Bridgett), Lucas (Cori) and Jason Patterson; grandfather of Isabella, Alexis, Benjamin, Kylie, Elle and Melody; brother of Elmore (Leslie) Patterson and Peggi Austin and the late Virginia Wynn; also survived by loving sisters-in-law and extended family members. Preceded in death by parents, Elmore and Lilliam (Brown) Patterson. Dr. Patterson earned his Pre-Med degree from Westminster College before going on to earn his MD from University of Pittsburgh Medical School. His career has spanned from practicing at UPMC Mercy Hospital and Renewal, Inc., as well as serving as the Chair of the Department of Medicine at Mercy Providence Hospital and Site Medial Officer for Allegheny County Jail. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching sports especially pro wrestling, horror movies, comic books and his family. Dr. Patterson was a very caring and generous man who always helped anyone in any way he could. He dedicated his life's work to caring for the poor, elderly, uninsured and incarcerated. He was admired and adored by all who knew him and is sorely missed. Macey; great- grandmother to Amber Rose Macey and Arie, Mila, and Fiona Kalcevic; daughter of the late Patrick and Hazel Clougherty of East Pittsburgh; beloved sister of Leo Clougherty (Patricia). Preceded in death by her brothers, Richard, Robert, Francis and Raymond Clougherty. She is survived by one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Known as "Pat" or "Patsy" by many, she spent over 40 years of her life working within the dining services of Duquesne University, welcoming many young students to the daily meals in their time away from home. She became a comfort to many as well as a friend. Pat supported the students in their athletic endeavors by becoming a great fan of the Duquesne Dukes football, basketball and baseball teams, attending as many games as she could. Also an avid Steelers fan, she enjoyed her Steelers home games at Three Rivers Stadium and Heinz Field up until age 85. SMITH JOHN MICHAEL JACK Of Mt. Lebanon, born September 24, 1921, died peacefully Sunday, November 23, 2014, after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Elizabeth McDonough, in 2003; a son, James Michael Smith, who died in 2007; a granddaughter, Susan Elizabeth Spinda, who died in 2009. Mr. Smith was the proud father of Mary Lou Spinda-Mangold (Fred) of Shaler, and Kathleen Bailey (Ron) of Mt. Lebanon. A beloved family patriarch, Mr. Smith was adored by his seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren, who fondly called him "Poppy or PaPa". Mr. Smith enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1942 and served in the Philippines and Fiji during World War II as a first lieutenant in the American Infantry Division in the U.S. Army. For 40 years, he was a regional manager in the steel industry. After his retirement in 1986, Mr. Smith served as a volunteer at Marian Manor for many years.
