ANCHORS JAMES M. Age 89, of Plum, passed away on February 16, 2017. He was born April 9, 1927, to Frank and Murlene Anchors who predeceased him. Jim was also preceded in death by the love of his life, Norma (Dock); and six of his sisters, Janice, Virginia, Nelma, Norma, Shirley and Leah. He is survived by sons, Tim of Murrysville and Bill (Linda) of Plum; five grandchildren, Tiffany, Ryan, Amber, Nicole and Valerie; three brothers, Charles (Veronica), Donald, and Robert (Eileen); and one sister JoAnn (Tom); as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and great- grandchildren. Jim was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and member of the Plum American Legion Post 980, the Shriners, the Odd fellows, and the Center Club. SCULLEY PAULA COOK Paula died very peacefully at her home in Sewickley, Pennsylvania on February 22, 2017, at the age of 71, after a long illness. A passionate conservationist and horticulturist, Paula served as President of the Garden Club of Allegheny County where she co-founded Botany-In-Action, an organization dedicated to help conserve plants and indigenous botanical knowledge throughout the world. She also served on the boards of Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh and the Amazon Conservation Team, as well as co-founding the Fern Hollow Nature Center in Sewickley. She was a gifted and dedicated gardener who took great pleasure in creating flower gardens, particularly those devoted to attracting butterflies. Daughter of artist Peter Cook, Paula was a superb quilter and used her natural artistic skills to make over 40 extraordinary handmade quilts over her lifetime. She also served on the board of Sewickley Academy and was named Sewickley's Woman of the Year in 2006. Paula is survived by her husband, David, former CEO of H.J. Heinz U.S.A.; her daughter, Heather Reedy of Boulder, Montana, and her husband, John Reedy; her son, D. Sculley of Cambridge, Massachusetts and his wife, Jessica Sculley; three grandchildren, Brigid Reedy, Johnny Reedy and Sofia Sculley; and three brothers, Peter, John and Stephen Cook; as well as a large and amazing family of Cooks and Wiggins. Paula will be remembered as a strong, caring, bright, positive and practical woman who always put the interests of others ahead of herself. Despite so many accomplishments in her life, for Paula, family always came first. THOMPSON STEVEN Age 58, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017. A longtime resident of Glenshaw, he was born May 28, 1958. He was employed by Mercy Behavioral Health as a peer support worker. Son of Helen (Holzworth) and the late John H. Thompson; brother of Jeffrey Thompson (Debra); uncle of Elizabeth Thompson Saraceno and Sara Thompson Guertin and great-uncle of Skylar Paige Saraceno. Steve loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He could be seen many times trout fishing through out the area and ice fishing at North Park where he was photographed for news articles on several occasions. KAUFMAN ARLENE R. Age 96, of Longwood at Oakmont, formerly of Ross Twp., on Monday, February 20, 2017. Wife of the late Walter J. Kaufman; loving mother of Dennis E. (Cheryl) Kaufman, Alan J. (Pam) Kaufman and the late Wayne (surviving Linda) Kaufman; also survived by five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Arlene was quite the traveler in her later years and visited interesting places all over the world. She was an avid bridge player and golfer. She was a member of the Oakmont Country Club for 47 years and played golf until she was 95 years young. EBERT JEAN Born on May 9, 1920, and preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Irene Ebert; sisters, Helen (Joseph) Clarkson and Margaret (Donald) Fett; one niece, Margaret (Douglas) Joslin; and longtime friend, Hough Minnis, Jean Ebert passed quietly on February 22, 2017. She is survived by two nephews, Joseph (Diane) Clarkson and Donald (Jeannette) Clarkson; and three nieces, Lynn (James) Turnquist, Jeanne (William) Dahl, and Nancy (Scott) Kocher. She is also survived by many great and great-great- nieces and nephews. She graduated from Robert Morris College and spent most of her career working for Ralph Young and Associates. She attended Emmanuel and First Trinity Lutheran Churches. Spending most of her years in Greenfield, she loved all things Pittsburgh, especially the sports teams. WINCKO JOAN C. Age 72, of Bethel Park passed away peacefully on February 21, 2017, with her family by her side. Beloved wife of Kenneth A. Wincko; loving mother of Lisa (Mark) Carper, Ken (Amy) Wincko, Laurie (Tom) Mathie, and Jeff (Leticia) Wincko; grandmother of Matthew Carper, Kaitlin Wincko, Evelyn Mathie, Cameron Wincko, Kelsey Wincko, Alaina Wincko, and Corinne Wincko; sister of Nancy (Roger) Sullivan, Cynthia Sanders, Debbie (Bob) Staniech, and Bill (Debbie) Sakowic. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Bertha Sakowic. Joan attended Divine Redeemer Academy and the University of Pittsburgh. In her working career she served as an executive secretary at Western Penn National Bank, as a Multi-Million-Dollar Producer for Howard Hanna Real Estate Company, and held various positions in retail and mortgage and loan servicing. Joan was always willing to devote her time volunteering for her children's activities. First and foremost, Joan will be remembered for her fierce devotion to her family and kindness to everyone. VARGO ROY MERLE 1930-2016 - Roy Vargo “Corky” passed away on October 11, 2016, age 86. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Olga Vargo; wife, Winnie; and brother, Edgar. He is survived by his son, Stuart (Todd) Vargo, daughter-in-law, Emilee Vargo; and grandsons, Christopher Forbes Vargo and Austin Alexander Vargo. Roy was born in McKeesport, PA and attended The Greenbrier Military School in West Virginia. He graduated from Colgate University where he received a BA in Economics. Roy joined the army after graduation where he served honorably for two years. After his service to our country, he moved to Duquense, PA and joined his father and brother in the family insurance agency. Roy had many interests and hobbies. He was an avid reader, history buff and loved the game of basketball and golf. He was a long standing member of Youghiogheny Country Club where he won five club championships! In 1991 Roy moved to Birmingham to be near to his son and family. He enjoyed his many years there and loved being a grandfather. He was supportive, kind, loving and will be forever missed.
