BROWN RUTH ANNE RUTH A. BROWN,...
BROWN RUTH ANNE Ruth A. Brown, 82, died peacefully in her sleep after a long illness on March 5, 2016. A beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, Ruth dedicated her life to her family and community. Ruth was born on October 14, 1933, in Dakota City, Iowa, the daughter of Edsall and Lorraine (Snodgrass) Rust. She graduated from Davenport High School where she was active in the band and orchestra, playing the bassoon and clarinet. When a senior in high school she was elected Davenport Rainbow Girls Worthy Advisor. At Iowa State she majored in institutional management, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree. In her senior year she was selected to Mortar Board, the highest honorary for women, acknowledging superior academic performance, leadership and service. At Iowa State she met her husband of 60 years, Keith Brown. In the summer before their senior year they both attended a YMCA/YWCA conference at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin where their relationship developed. Looking for opportunities to be together they both joined the choir of the Collegiate Presbyterian Church. Immediately after college they were married and Keith was commissioned in the US Marine Corps, beginning their odyssey of world travels. They lived for over two years in Hawaii while Keith was stationed there, and that began a lifelong love of the islands, where they would return again and again. Their two sons were born in Hawaii. Ruth and Keith also have lived in Fredericksburg, Virginia, when Keith was stationed at Quantico; Kailua, Hawaii, when he was stationed at Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station; Chicago, Illinois, when he was a graduate student in anthropology at the University of Chicago, where their daughter was born; Lincoln, Nebraska, when Keith took his first teaching job at the University of Nebraska; Honolulu, Hawaii, many times when Keith had visiting appointments at the University of Hawaii and the East-West Center; and Mizusawa, Sendai, and Tokyo, Japan on various research and teaching trips. Ruth combined the difficult tasks of raising a young family in a foreign culture together with giving something back to Japan by teaching and tutoring students and adults in English. Her former students still talk about the cookies she baked for them in 1962. Since 1965 Ruth's home has been Edgewood and Homestead, Pennsylvania. Beginning in 2004 after retirement Ruth and Keith have lived in Honolulu for approximately half of each year. In 1998 Ruth and Keith were on the Semester at Sea, a voyage highlighted by a wildlife safari in Kenya. Ruth and Keith raised three children of which they are very proud, Gordon, a businessman in Maui, Gary, a teacher in Glens Falls, New York, and Deborah, a pediatrician in Houston. Ruth was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers, Penguins, and the University of Pittsburgh football and basketball teams and was fortunate to have enjoyed many championship seasons in her life. Ruth was a strong advocate for education. She was an instructor for a psychology course for high school students in the Illinois Correspondence School, and she was an instructional assistant in the Learning Disabilities Program at the Edgewood Elementary School. She was the advisor to the English Speaking Club of the Mizusawa Commercial High School in Japan. She was the President-elect of the University of Pittsburgh Women's Association but gave up the presidency when she went with her family to Honolulu for a year when her husband was a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii. Ruth was very active in her community wherever she lived, but especially loved Edgewood, where she raised her children and lived for 40 years. She was an active member of the Edgewood Civic Club, PTA, Cot Club, and the Garden Club, and organized the Edgewood Annual Sports Banquet and the Edgewood Little League Banquet. She was the Judge of Elections in Edgewood for many years. In Hawaii she started her long career in retail, first working at the Sears store at the Ala Moana Center in Honolulu, and then as head of the children's section at the Penn Center Sears in Wilkins Township in Pittsburgh. Renting a home in Hawaii one year with a beautiful garden gave Ruth the opportunity to enjoy her hobby of gardening in a tropical setting. In Edgewood she enjoyed her garden, and the chances it gave her to talk with her good neighbors. Ruth was a loving and supportive wife, sister, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Keith; her sister, Patricia Stouffer (Loren) of Davenport, Iowa; her brother, Donald (Fran) of Pahrump, Nevada; her three children, Gordon (Rio), Gary (Betty) and Deborah; and five grandchildren, Matthew (Moni), Ryan, Kayla, Noah, and Alex. She will be dearly missed by her family. A visitation will be held at the THOMAS L. NIED FUNERAL HOME, 7441 Washington Ave., Swissvale from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Thursday, March 10, 2016. A memorial service will be held at the Edgewood Presbyterian Church, 120 E. Swissvale Ave., at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 11, 2016. Burial will be later in the National Cemetery of the Pacific, Punchbowl, Honolulu, Hawaii, after scattering some of her ashes in the ocean at the Calvary by the Sea Episcopal Church in Aina Haina, Hawaii. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Ruth and Keith Brown endowed scholarship fund, University of Pittsburgh, online at www.giveto.pitt.edu, or by mail to the University of Pittsburgh, Office of Institutional Advancement, 128 North Craig St., Pittsburgh, PA 15260.
