THORPE LAWRENCE I. "LARRY" Of Atlanta, GA, passed away on December 13, 2013, at the age of 83. He lived a full, joyous, and accomplished life. He was a lawyer, a veteran, a successful real estate developer, a community leader, a committed environmentalist, and a powerful advocate wherever an issue of conscience stirred the fires of his tremendous heart. But to his family and friends, he was so much more than can be captured here. He was jokes told for the fifth time, he was daring stories of adventures in Israel, South America, Australia and beyond, he was 15 books deep on a bedside table and he was, throughout, our very foundation. His love allowed us to succeed, his strength allowed us to fail, and his consistency allowed us always to feel at home in his presence. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Barbara Williams; son, Ben Thorpe; daughter, Wendy Kornfield (Cliff); grandchildren, Haley, Josh, and Meryl Kornfield; sister-in-law, Karen Branan; nephews, John Thorpe (Parima), Josh Thorpe, David Thorpe, and Brad Branan; grandnephew and grandnieces, Luke Thorpe, Maddie Thorpe, and Fallon DuBose; godchildren, Lee Nicholson (Ed), Richard Taylor (Sara), and Ruthie Norton (Curtis); grandgodsons, Evan and Gordon Nicholson; dog, Ari; and a host of loving and loved extended family and friends. A memorial service will be held at the Atlanta Botanical Garden on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Atlanta Music Project, The Fernbank Museum of Natural History, or a charity of your choice. WALLISCH FREDERICK MICHAEL 95, of Baldwin Boro, joined his wife, Patricia Young Wallisch, in Heaven on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2013, just eight months after her passing in March. Fred passed away at Mercy Hospital with his family by his side. 65 years ago, he had met his wife at Mercy Hospital. She was a young nurse caring for his mother. He brought in a Whitman's Candy Sampler as a thank you and that was where it all began. They were happily married for 63 years. Their love produced six children, Anne (Bill) Brucker, Mike (Patty) Wallisch, Mary (Marin) Mandradjieff, Joan Wallisch (Gary Seidel), Ruth Wallisch, and Kent (Shawn) Wallisch; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Fred was the son of the late Albert and Margaret (Lenz) Wallisch and brother of the late Bill Wallisch, Mary Luccy and Laverne Feeney. After graduating from Brentwood High School, he earned his B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh in industrial engineering, then proceeded to work at the Homestead Steel Works. He entered the Navy in 1944 and during his tour of duty he was promoted to Lieutenant (jg). He was qualified as Division Officer, Ass't. First Lieutenant and Watch Officer. On March 31, 1945, the USS Hanover was commissioned and was his home until it was decommissioned on May 11, 1946. During his service, he received the World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon. Following his discharge in 1946, he became a member of the U.S. Navy Reserve. He maintained friendships with his shipmates to the end. Fred then decided to follow in his father's footsteps and become an insurance broker. He maintained the Wallisch Insurance Agency until he retired at age 86. A committed family man, Fred was actively involved in his children's lives and activities. He was present at every swimming practice and competition, his children could always hear him cheering them on. An avid tennis player until age 77, he enjoyed many good times with his tennis crowd. He was supportive and especially proud of his grandchildren as they became physicians, artists, dancers, actors, writers, teachers, professional skiers, and entrepreneurs. (Bill (Stacy), April and Brenna Brucker, Tom and Amy Wallisch, Pete and Mara Mandradjieff, Lindy (Matt) Fabyanic, Colton, Logan and Vivian Wallisch).
