PALOMBO BERNADETTE JONES Age 64, passed peacefully on Saturday, April 11, 2015. Beloved wife of the late Michael Palombo; beloved mother of the late Dominic (Rosy) Palombo; loving grandmother of Nino and Nico Palombo; daughter of the late Gilbert and Elva Jones; sister of Gilbert (Nellie) Jones, Lawrence (Anita) Jones, Jimmy (Mary) Jones, and David (Claire) Jones; cherished friend of Patricia Susie (Sam) Juliana; also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She completed St. Peters Grade School and Bishop Dominic High School on the North Side, Pittsburgh. Years later, as a wife and mother, she made the decision to continue her education by earning a bachelor's degree in Political Sciences from Pitzer College in Claremont, CA. She received her master's degree in Criminal Justice from the Center for Politics and Economics at Claremont University and a Ph.D. in Political Sciences from the same center. Dr. Jones- Palombo arrived at Louisiana State University-Shreveport (LSUS) in 1995 to lead a prestigious grant on Community Oriented Policing and received her 20-year pin shortly before her death. Although she was noted for her studies on community policing, her topics of research were eclectic, including teaching evaluations, gang theory, and white collar crime, to name only a few. Throughout her career she was dedicated not only to her academic field but also to two professional organizations: the Academy of Community Justice Sciences and the American Society of Criminology. She was a member of Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society. Her commitment to professional organizations was further reflected in the number of students she encouraged to participate in them, particularly Lambda Sigma Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma at LSUS. Interested and involved in her community, Dr. Jones-Palombo was proud of her membership in League of Women Voters, an organization she served as Louisiana vice president from 2003 to 2007. For seven years, Dr. Jones-Palombo served as the chairman of the LSUS Department of History and Social Science (2008-2014), working during difficult economic times to assure quality educational resources for the students in the department. An accomplished and devoted educator, she penned numerous articles and was author, editor or co-editor of several books: "Academic Professionalism in Law Enforcement," (which was one of the initial studies of gender in law enforcement), "Provision of the Right to Counsel in Caddo Parish," and "Wicked Shreveport". In 2004, Dr. Jones-Palombo was named to Who's Who Among American Teachers. This is a testament to her unswerving dedication to students and to her profession. Her life as an educator assures that, although she is no longer here, her legacy remains in all whom she influenced. TYLER MICHELE PASSED ON MAY 2...

TYLER MICHELE Passed on May 27, 2015. Michele came to Pittsburgh in 2001 from just outside Paris. Her enthusiasm for her new home was great and grew continually. Throughout her life, Michele sought to meet the challenges of the world and in particular its children with whole-souled devotion, with generosity, persistence, and actions that continue to bless others. In Paris, she mentored young people in the Muslim ghettos in the outskirts of Paris. In Pittsburgh she worked with students at the Intercultural House of the University of Pittsburgh as well as staff and administrators of the Pittsburgh public schools, in particular the Pittsburgh Montessori School, to develop a curriculum addressing racism. She saw this activity as part of her career as a practitioner of healing in Christian Science. On a trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo with her husband, John M. Tyler, she came into contact with an orphanage of children accused of being witches. As a result of Michele's persistent efforts and the generosity of donors she found, the destitute orphanage of outcasts has become a thriving community. As Michele often exclaimed, “It is a miracle!” A Memorial Service will be held on June 27, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at First Church of Christ, Scientist, 201 N. Dithridge (corner of Bayard St.), Pittsburgh, PA 15213. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The InterCultural Project, 272 North Dithridge, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
