Patterson and April Hanson. After graduation from Franklin & Marshall College he entered the Army in 1943, serving in Company B, 322nd Medical Battalion, 97th Division. After returning home he had a long career at Edgar Thomson Works of US Steel. He coached Little League/softball and umpired when his children were young, and mentored junior achievement. He loved wildlife, hunting and fishing his entire life. He later enjoyed volunteering to stock streams before the opening of trout season. He was a Mason, belonged to John Dayton Rogers VFW Post 6681, East Suburban Friendship Club, and Crowfoot Rod & Gun Club. DEVEY DAVID J. Age 85, of Bethlehem, died, Tuesday, April 14, 2015. He was the devoted husband of Miriam (Rorison) Devey. They would have celebrated 63 years of marriage June 5, 2015. Born in Homestead, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph H. and Grace O. (Fleming) Devey. David was a dedicated educator, inspiring coach and gifted school leader. He worked for ten years as the Director of Christian Education at East Liberty Presbyterian Church. David taught at St. Edmund's Academy, then was Headmaster at Moravian Academy, Aiken Preparatory School and Linden Hall School for Girls. Surviving with his wife, Miriam, are five children; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by a grandson, David Caswall "Cas" Devey; a sister, Audrey Zurasky; and a brother, Joseph Devey. A Celebration of the Life of David J. Devey will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at Central Moravian Church, 73 West Church St., Bethlehem 18018, with a reception to follow. Burial is private. KYSEL RUTH CONOVER PASSED AWAY...
KYSEL RUTH CONOVER Passed away on April 13, 2015, at Concordia of Fox Chapel near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was 93 years old. Ruth was born on August 17, 1921, and raised in Newark, New Jersey. She was valedictorian of her high school class and voted most likely to succeed. Ruth graduated from Montclair State College in Montclair, New Jersey, before enlisting in the United States Navy, where she worked in intelligence and attained the rank of Lieutenant. She was last stationed in Norfolk, Virginia during the Second World War. After leaving the service, she worked for some years at the Bell Telephone Company. While there, she met her husband, Joseph Patrick Kysel, on a blind date. Ruth spent most of her professional life as a teacher. For 29 years, she taught high school English at Fort Lee High School in Fort Lee, New Jersey. She was the advisor to the National Honor Society chapter and founded and led a successful exchange program for students there. For nearly a decade, she and her husband participated in the American Host Program for teachers from abroad. Ruth was a trusted mentor to many of her students and fellow teachers, leading to a number of lifelong friendships. Ruth was a quick wit and was animated by an insatiable curiosity. She and her husband, Joe, traveled to more than 30 countries on six continents. Istanbul, Turkey, was a favorite destination. She was a four-time Jeopardy! winner and also a repeat-winner on the Who, What, or Where Game. The New York Times crossword puzzles were a favorite pastime. She was also an aspiring author. Ruth and her husband, Joe, were married for 67 years before her passing, theirs was a loving and committed partnership. Ruth and Joe lived for many years in River Edge, New Jersey where they raised their children. They opened their home to and cared for their children and grandchildren many times over the years. She was a devoted, and forceful, matriarch. Above all, her passion was education. She challenged others to achieve great things and forever encouraged and supported her three children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren to enrich their lives through learning. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, Alan Thomas Conover and Marguerite Hasfeld Conover; and her daughter, Margaret Peggy Venn Rubin. She is survived by her husband, Joe; their sons, Andrew Joseph Kysel and Paul Alan Kysel (Kristine); five grandchildren, Christopher, Joseph, Ian, Emma and Elizabeth; and two great-grandchildren, Jack and Samantha. CARPENTER EDWARD DWIGHT, Jr. Age 81, of North Huntingdon, formerly of Litteton, MA, passed away after a brief illness, one year ago today, April 19, 2014, in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital with his devoted and beloved wife Jil at his bedside. Ed was the only child of the late Edward and Victoria (Kuczylowski) Carpenter, Sr. He was born in Wheeling, WV, April 5, 1933, and raised in McMurray. He graduated from Peters Twp. High School where he played center on the football team. Ed enlisted in the Army during the Korean War and served in 821st Engineer Battalion. He went on to graduate from California State University and Boston University as an English major. Ed had a distinguished career in the Chelmsford High School in Massachusetts and was in charge of the English Book Closet and Honor Society advisor. His good friend and co-worker Barry Hazzard spearheaded a scholarship fund in Ed's name. Ed was a proud member of the First Presbyterian Church in Irwin. He attended Book Club and Tai Chi classes at Redstone Colonial Estates and was a member of the Penn's Woods Seniors. All who met Ed knew him to be a gentle, kind and generous gentleman and a wordsmith. His most frequently used word was thank you. His poem "To Jill" was entered in a poetry contest, published, and selected as a semifinalist. On July 20, 2012, Ed married his college sweetheart, Sondra Jil Coffman in the Norwin Public Library Butterfly Garden officiated by Rev. Ronald Durika. Ed's favorite meal was a crock of French Onion Soup and a steak at the Jacktown Ride and Hunt Club. He remained loyal to his Patriots and Bruins but, would cheer on the Steelers and Penguins as long as they weren't playing his old teams. On the date that would have been their second wedding anniversary, Ed's ashes along with those of his feline companion, Mr. Tango and feline buddy, Mr. Deiter were scattered at a private ceremony.
