WILLIAM E. "BILL" HILDEBRAND William E. "Bill" Hildebrand, age 93, of Prosperity passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2020. He was the beloved husband of Phyllis (Johnson) Hildebrand; loving father of Linda (Marc) Case and William B. (Lisa) Hildebrand; proud grandfather of Jeffrey (Tia), Elyse and Kristen; and great-grandfather to Janessa, Kailyn, and Keira Hildebrand and Dennis Gray; uncle to John R. Johnson III. Son of the late Elmer and Bertha Hildebrand. He was the loving brother of the late Patricia Hildebrand. He is also survived by a host of cherished friends and neighbors. Bill was a 1945 graduate of South Hills High School where he was the president of his senior class. He was a former controller of Luria Steel and a sales manager for Matthew Bender Law books. Bill was a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served in occupied Germany after V. E. Day. The loss of Bill is unmeasurable, he leaves behind many who will miss his wisdom and wit. DR. HARVEY JAY SUGERMAN Age 82, of Sanibel, Florida, previously Richmond, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on August 9, 2020. Born in Pittsburgh, Harvey was the David M. Hume professor of surgery at the VCU School of Medicine, and chief of the Division of General/Trauma Surgery from 1978 to 2003, during which time he operated on thousands of patients. Never one to sit still, following retirement, Harvey became Editor-in-Chief of Surgery of Obesity and Related Diseases (SOARD), while simultaneously pursuing the invention of an abdominal device to cure preeclampsia. He spent three years as a surgeon in the U.S. Army and served as president of the Western Trauma Association (WTA) and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). Harvey was a pioneer of gastric bypass surgery, providing evidence that it was the most effective option for weight loss and making it one of the most common operations performed by general surgeons today. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University and Master of Science and Medical Degrees from Jefferson Medical College, and he completed his post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania. Harvey loved skiing, traveling and photographing the world, 18-year old scotch, eating and drinking well, an occasional Baby Ruth candy bar, and spending time with his wife, friends, four children and nine grandchildren. Harvey had a relentless drive in the pursuit of scientific truth and made a lasting impact by challenging prevailing dogma. He inspired countless students, fellow surgeons, and his children and loved to share the stories he gathered throughout his long and remarkable life. He is survived by his wife, Betsy; sister, Marilyn Latterman; and children, Kathryn, Andy, David, and Elizabeth. EDWARD PARRENDO Of Brighton Heights, age 67, passed away on August 11, 2020, with his sister by his side following a courageous battle with cancer. Son of the late Luella and Nicholas Parrendo; brother of David (the late Lorraine), Celeste, and John (Chris); also survived by many cousins, his aunt, nieces and nephews. He served his country as a U.S. Marine from 1972-1974. From 1980-1982, Edward worked for Parsons Brinkerhoff, drafting design and construction drawings for Allegheny County's Light Rail Transit System. He worked for various architectural and engineering firms and in 2006, was hired by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was dedicated to the work and contributed much to our region's infrastructure. In 2011, Ed accepted an assignment with the Department of Defense in Monterrey, California. Ed enjoyed family gatherings, biking, swimming, walking and exploring new places. JACOB J. POMPE, JR. "JAKE" Age 98, of Russellton, West Deer Township, died Sunday, August 9, 2020, at UPMC-St. Margaret Hospital. He was born February 15, 1922, in Russellton to the late Jacob J. and Helen (Primozic) Pompe, Sr. Jake grew up and lived in Russellton all of his life. He served his country in the US Army during WWII achieving a rank of Corporal. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Parish, Russellton, the Owl's Club and the SNPJ Lodge. Jake worked for over 20 years as a prison guard at the former Allegheny County Work House, Blawnox, then as a maintenance worker for Deer Lakes School District until he retired. He was proud to have received the Voter Hall of Fame Award, from the state of Pennsylvania for 50 consecutive years of voting. Jake enjoyed gardening, cooking, listening to music, going to the ACME Club every weekend when he could, though he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the most. Survivors include his children, Janet E. Pompe of the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh, Jeffrey (Kathy) Pompe of Seabrook, SC, James R. (Judith A.) Pompe of Russellton and William (Virginia C.) Pompe of West Deer; grandchildren, Jason (Colleen) Pompe, Karen (Ben) Gilbert, Jessica Pompe and Amanda Pompe; great-grandchildren, Jack Gilbert and Cora Pompe, his sisters; Rose Marie (Richard) Wadding of Houston, TX and Helen A. (Edward) Yaworski of Russellton; his brother, Raymond (Patricia) Pompe of Greentree and his sister-in-law, Esther Pompe of Russellton. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Patricia Ann Chieppa Giordano; children, Donna (Charles) Moesta, Paula (Patrick) Kocen; sister, Kathleen Viselli; four grandchildren, Rachel Smeigh, Nathan Smeigh, Kiley (Andrew) Rogan, Kegan (Anastasia) Moesta; loving brother-in-law, Joseph P. Chieppa; and sister-in-law, Nikki Giordano; also nieces, nephews and cousins. Don grew up in the Brushton area of Pittsburgh. He attended Crescent School, Baxter, Westinghouse, and graduated from Penn Hills Senior High School in 1956. Shortly after graduation Don enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served two years active duty at MCAS, Kaneohe, Hawaii and four years in reserve. Don is a lifetime member of AMVETS Post 85, White Valley, Export, PA, and a member of American Legion, Post 0274, Fort Myers, FL. After discharge from active duty, he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Education from Duquesne University and a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. He taught in the Pittsburgh Public Schools for thirty-two years starting at Crescent School and finishing at Grandview Elementary where he retired. Don loved the outdoors. He had a camp in Brookville, PA. He hunted and fished in Elk County, and backpacked in Alaska. He and Pat loved traveling and settled in Fort Myers, FL. JOSEPHINE GARCIA PUSATERI AGE ...
JOSEPHINE GARCIA PUSATERI Age 94, of Burgettstown, passed away on Thursday afternoon, August 13, 2020, in the Masonic Village, Sewickley, PA. She was born on April 26, 1926, in Langeloth, the youngest child of Jose Pato and Lucy Vega Garcia who immigrated to the United States from Spain. A 1944 graduate of the Union High School in Burgettstown, she was the only child in her family fortunate enough to attend college earning her degree in education from Bethany College in 1948 where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. Mrs. Pusateri began her 40 year teaching career in the Burgettstown Area School District (formerly known as Union High School) in 1948 where she taught Spanish and Latin. During that time she inspired multiple generations of students by coordinating an exchange student program from and to South America, coaching cheerleading in the 1950's, organized the first homecoming and the annual Harvest Ball with the Spanish Club in the 1960's, and in the 1970's until her retirement chaperoning student trips to Italy and Spain with her husband. After retirement she enjoyed spending her time with her family, grandchildren and many friends. She was an active parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Burgettstown where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters and Christian Mothers. Her husband, Joseph Paul Pusateri, whom she married on June 10, 1950, passed away on March 1, 1998. She was the beloved mother of Joseph Jody P. Pusateri, Jr. M.D. of O'Hara Twp. and David P. Pusateri, J.D. and wife Dorothy Walker Pusateri, M.D. of Sewickley; grandmother of Meg Pusateri, M.D., Nick Pusateri, Emmy P. Robison and husband Matt Robison, Ph.D. and Tim Pusateri; she is also survived by her great-grandson, Henry David Robison; and many nieces and nephews. The last of her immediate family, she was preceded in death in addition to her parents and husband by her brother and sisters, Raymond Garcia and wife Nancy, Mary Muniz and husband Primo, Anne Farulli and husband Peppy, Margaret Christ and husband Nicholas, M.D. and Lillian Zenoni and husband John. A Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Lourdes Church of St. Isidore the Farmer Parish will be held privately for her immediate family followed by interment in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Burgettstown. Those wishing to remember Josephine in a special way may make a memorial donation in her memory to the Burgettstown Area Scholarship Fund.
