JOSEPH F. ARTUSO Age 92, of Ligonier, passed away peacefully and blessedly on Saturday, July 25, 2020 at home. He was born December 21, 1927, in Donora, Pennsylvania, son of Frank and Rose (Ritacco) Artuso. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Burke Artuso, and a daughter-in-law, Carol (Suskovich) Artuso. He is survived by his beloved and loving wife, Polly Artuso; four children, Barbara Artuso, Frank Artuso, Ralph (Karen) Artuso, and John (Missy) Artuso; nine grandchildren, Joseph Roth and his fiancee, Fatima Rizvi, Joseph (Emily) Artuso, Sarah (Greg) Linden, David (Jordan) Artuso, Lisa (John) Antoshak, Peter Artuso, Jacob Artuso and his fiancee, Shiloh Kail, Ben Artuso, and Meghan Artuso; two great-grandchildren, Evalee and Joseph "Jeb" Linden; two step-children, Tad (Elizabeth) Krear and Katie (Jeff) Yannuzzi; and four step-grandchildren, Niki, Alex, Julia, and Jenna; a sister, Philomena (Artuso) West, and her sons, Mitchell, Gunnar, and Scott West. Mr. Artuso graduated from Donora High School and received a degree in civil engineering from Carnegie Technological Institute (now Carnegie Mellon University). He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Jane Burke, in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army in occupied Japan. His extensive engineering career included over a decade at Pittsburgh Testing Laboratory, following which he started his own company, Construction Engineering Consultants, in 1976; he continued to contribute his knowledge and experience there until he was 90 years old. During his career he served as chair of the Committee on Construction of Nuclear Facility Components of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and chair of the Committee on Inspection of Concrete of the American Concrete Institute. He also served as a member and past president of the Ligonier Valley Recreation Board. He was a member of St. Michael's of the Valley Episcopal Church, where he served several terms on the church Vestry. Joe was also an avid skier, both locally where he was a member of the Laurel Mountain Ski Patrol, and during trips to New England, Europe, South America, and the Rockies; he continued skiing into his 90's. He was known for his infectious laugh and smile and no one could be in his presence without feeling his love and joy surround them. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, services will be limited to immediate family members. EVA STASKO (MAKITKA) Eva Stasko (Makitka) of Indian Pines in Robinson Township died peacefully at the age of 89. Eva was born on March 7, 1931, in Carnegie, PA to Harry and Anna Makitka. Eva is survived by her children, Kris (Dave) Burianek, Kathy Stasko, John (Shirley) Stasko, and Kim (Patrick) O'Brien. Also surviving her, her grandchildren, Frank, Dave (Tammy) and Andy (Shelly) Burianek, Olesia Stasko, Logan and Morgan O'Brien; her great-grandchildren, Tina and Will Burianek (Frank), Emily, Kaley and Max Burianek (Dave), Ally Burianek (Andy), and great-great-grandchildren, Finn and Ryker Burianek (Frank). She is also survived by her sister, Rose Zalenchak and brother, Harry Makitka (Theresa); sister-in-law, Agnes Makitka and many nieces, nephews and Godchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband John. Also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Mary Larson, Alex Makitka, Anna West, John Makitka, Anastasia (Nell) Freucht-Brick, Dorothy Rozum and Helen Milewski. Eva graduated from Robinson Township High School. Eva enjoyed working in her flower gardens and teaching all of her children and grandchildren how to bake cookies and brownies. After baking time, there was always time for games and cards and catching all of the grandchildren cheating at whatever they were playing. Eva enjoyed spending time with all of the grandchildren and never turned down the opportunity to baby sit them. Eva was always giving of her time to take care of her husband John, relatives, loved ones and neighbors during their times of illness and sickness. Eva was a dedicated life-long member of Saint Peter and Saint Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Carnegie, PA. She walked to church as a child with her parents, brothers and sisters and then later in life drove to church with her children and grandchildren, no matter what the weather conditions were. She was a member of the Saint Peter and Saint Paul kitchen workers and enjoyed the gossip time and had many laughs with everyone while pinching and packing thousands of pierogis. Viewing will be from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2020, at Saint Peter and Saint Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Carnegie, PA with a Parastas following at 5:00 p.m. Please follow CDC guidelines that are in place. On Saturday, August 1, 2020, viewing will be from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. with a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Peter and Saint Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church followed by burial at Saint Peter and Saint Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery in Scott Township. A memorial gathering will be scheduled at a later date when permitted. ROBERT ALAN CYPHER Robert Alan Cypher, born in 1943, to Ann and Willis Cypher in Pittsburgh, PA. Attended Edgewood High School and Penn State University. After obtaining his MBA, he went to work in Human Resources for Kennametal in Latrobe, PA. He then worked as Director of HR for Rockwell International, where his boss joked he was "neither humane nor resourceful." He finished his career as VP of HR for Education Management Corp. Bob was a longtime member of Edgewood Country Club in Pittsburgh and Belfair in Bluffton. He married Kathy Haberstick, also of Pittsburgh, in 1988. They travelled the world, cruising and playing golf. They retired to Hilton Head and built a home in Belfair, where he was known as "Belfair Bob", former Muckety Muck. He will be remembered for his quick wit and "Mel Brooks" brand of comedy, and his love for golf and wine and Penn State. He was a devoted member of The Church of The Cross, and became an avid fundraiser for The Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research after he was diagnosed in 2011. Bob passed away at home July 26th from complications of Parkinson's disease. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy; his son, Matthew (Laurie) in Austin; his brother, Jon (Carol) in Oregon, and his niece, Ellen Gravante (Jim) in Pittsburgh. BERNARD A. KALOCAY "BO" Age 77, of Pittsburgh, on Wednesday, July 29, 2020. Beloved husband of the late Mary Lee Kalocay; son of the late Andrew B. and Margaret Koschlick Kalocay; loving father of Michael (Wendy) Kalocay, Jackie Kalocay-Hogg, and the late Jennifer Kalocay; special friend of Connie Zonca; grandfather of Andrew Hogg, Rylee Kalocay and Ryan Kalocay. Bernie touched the lives of many children as a teacher and principal in the South Allegheny School District for 35+ years. He also spent many years coaching baseball and basketball and officiating high school basketball throughout Western PA. An athlete himself, he never missed an opportunity to share stories of his trips to the College World Series as a pitcher for the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team in the early 60s or when he pitched batting practice for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Everyone who met Bernie was warmed by his ever-positive attitude. He had a knack for turning a stranger into a friend in minutes, leaving an imprint on everyone he met. His quirky sayings and optimistic outlook left smiles on the faces of everyone he came across. In his retirement, Bernie enjoyed watching sports, hosting neighborhood gatherings and pulling the handle – unsuccessfully, unfortunately – on slot machines at a local casino. JOSEPH SLAIN Of Castle Shannon, passed away at Concordia of the South Hills in Mt. Lebanon on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, age 95. Predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia, in 2005. Survived by his sons, Daniel Slain (Ronni) of Churchill, and Steve Slain (Robyn) of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, Jessica, Ty, and Lexie. Uncle of Don Rossi (Peggy), David Slain (Betty), Audrey (the late Thomas, Sr.); and other loving nieces and nephews. Also preceded in death by his two brothers, Abe Slain and Herman Slain; and two sisters, Freda Rossi and Belle Goldfon. Mr. Slain was a proud WWII Veteran who served honorably with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific from 1943 to 1945. He served in the amphibious forces aboard the USS LST-246 and earned the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with 5 Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, World War II Victory Medal, and earned six Battle Stars for WWII service. He served in the following campaigns: Kwajalein, Eniwetok Atoll 2/14/1944, Saipan-Tinian 6/15/1944, Peleliu-Palau 9/15/1944, Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, Philippines 1/5/44, and Okinawa-Gunto 5/2/1945. After the service, he was employed in the building and construction industry with Ellsworth Construction in Pittsburgh, Felton Industries in Macon/Augusta, GA, and Steubenville Construction in Steubenville, OH. Joe was a "Pittsburgh Guy" who was an avid lifelong Pittsburgh sports fan and season ticket holder for Pitt and Steelers football. He loved rooting for the Pitt Panthers, Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins. He also loved coaching baseball for the Beechview Little League and Colt League. RONI JAMES MILLSTINE Formerly of Clinton, currently of Kennedy Twp., died August 1, 2020, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born May 5, 1947, daughter of the late Philip Daniel and Mildred Upole McArdle. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband and father of her children, David Sutton James. She was forever thankful to God for blessing her with the love of her husband Herman Millstine, and her daughter Amy James Joyce (Dan) and her grandsons Dan and Sam, who made each day full of love and laughter. She is also survived by her stepson Mark Millstine (Betsy) and grandchildren Hannah and Erik; her siblings John J. McArdle, Nanci A. Jahnke, Susan K. Dodds, and many loving nieces and nephews. Her sister Lenore Thompson Stout also preceded her in death. She wanted to give special thanks to her dearest friends Catherine (Taffy) Krawchyk and Anne Burke. MARY LOU GULDEN Age 89, passed away on Saturday August 1, 2020. Wife of the late Carl W. Gulden; mother of Mark W. (Treva) Gulden, Linda M. (Ed) Pastorius and Marilyn J. (Joseph) Rubino. Sister of the late Harry Morris, Jean Banker and Elinor Madden. Also survived by nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mary Lou will be missed by Klair, nieces, nephews and her caretakers at Artis Senior Living. Mary Lou was an active member of Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church. GERTRUDE I. (STECIK) RAGAN Age 76, of Monroeville, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2020. Beloved wife of the late Edward John Ragan. Loving mother of David Edward (Melissa) Ragan, Diane Marie (Chuckie) Brooks, and Danielle Lisa (David) Hysong. Cherished grandmother of Victoria "Tori" (Mary Bryne) Ragan, Kayla Mento, Dylan Hysong, and Daniel Hysong. Sister of Tillie Noschese and Dolly Kostyak. Also survived by her sisters-in-law, Mary Jane (the late Art) Limbacher and Rose (the late Gary) Ragan; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, John and Gertrude (McClesky) Stecik; brothers, Robert Stecik and John (surviving wife, Joan) Stecik; and many loving brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Trudy began her career at Sears Roebuck, and later went on to work as a claims specialist for Prudential, and most recently worked as a cash coordinator for CVS for nearly 20 years. She was a longtime member of both the Byzantine Catholic Church of the Resurrection in Monroeville and Saints Peter and Paul Byzantine Church in Braddock. She always looked forward to taking her grandkids to Eat'n Park, and her greatest joy was the time spent with her family. The poems that she personally wrote for her family's birthdays will be greatly missed, along with her overall quick witted sense of humor and loving nature she had towards all she knew. Family and friends will be received Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the JOBE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, INC. (MONROEVILLE/PLUM CHAPEL), 445 Beatty Road, Monroeville, (412-856-4747).
