ROBERT J. ABBOTT Of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, after reaching the age of 90 years old. Bob was one of nine siblings, born on October 27, 1929, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Samuel and Catherine Abbate, later changed to Abbott. As a very young man he had to learn how to work hard and to take on whatever job was available to support himself and his family. In 1952, he married the love of his life, Alice Stolar. They had four children together, Robert (Stacey), Dino (Julia), Belinda Waters (Dave), and Melissa. Bob was also blessed with having 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was an early entrepreneur and ran his own small business, where he specialized in beautifully designed and crafted ornamental iron. Bob also was a dedicated City of Pittsburgh Firefighter for 38 years. His hard work and dedication for the job allowed him to climb the ranks to Fire Captain. He retired in 1992, and made it his passion to serve and help others. Bob and his wife, Alice, volunteered for nearly 60 years with the Catholic War Vets. He also worked together with Local No. 1 Fire as a clown, Bobby Blaze, to help raise money for children with special needs. In addition, he was the president of Sharing and Caring, an organization that helps injured and disabled veterans. Bob organized and ran their yearly golf outing and veteran boat ride on the Gateway Clipper Fleet for over 15 years. He was a member of Dallas Lodge No. 231 F. & A.M. He not only served others, he also served our country as a Marine in the Korean War. Bob was a strong, proud and good man. He is loved and will be missed by many. Mr. Lieber was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, School of Law in 1958 and received the Distinguished Alumni award in 2013. He practiced corporate tax law for over 50 years. At the start of his career, he was a partner at Berkman Ruslander Pohl Lieber & Engel. He then served as Chairman of Klett Lieber Rooney & Schorling. He later opened the Pittsburgh office of Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel and served as a Member of Eckert Seamans. He was a former president of the PA Bar Association, PA Bar Institute and PA Bar Foundation. He was also a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association. He was appointed by the PA Supreme Court to the founding CLE board and served as a member of ACTEC (American College of Trust and Estate Counsel). Mr. Lieber was on the Board of Trustees of the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC and the Pittsburgh Symphony. He was on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the Pittsburgh Opera, Board of Directors for the United Way of Allegheny County and Board of Directors for United Jewish Federation. He also was a former president of the School of Advanced Jewish Studies and Westmoreland Country Club. He was predeceased by his brother Jerome Lieber. Services and Interment Private. GARY A. MIHLFRIED Passed away at his home at age 66, on Monday, July 13, 2020, after a brave but difficult five year battle against cancer. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy H. (Ritter) and Paul N. Mihlfried. He was the beloved brother of Cheryl J. Pfennigwerth, Paul W. (Kathy) Mihlfried and Gail M. Mihlfried. Gary was the cherished and fun-loving uncle of Heidi (Keith Spencer) Pfennigwerth, Thomas (Wendy) Pfennigwerth, Adam (Grace Kane) Mihlfried, Brad (Kristin) Mihlfried, Jesse Beck, Stephen (Allie Jankens) Mihlfried, Sara (Eric) Upchurch and Nicole Mihlfried. He is also survived by 11 great-nieces and great-nephews; his aunt, his uncle and many cousins. Gary was a 1971 graduate of North Catholic High School. He was a lifelong member of Sheet Metal Workers Union, Local #12 where he was held in high regard by all who worked with him and where he held various management and supervisory roles. Gary loved the outdoors and nature, especially time spent at McConnell's Mill. He was happiest spending time with family and his close circle of lifelong friends. Gary was an all-around loving, kind and considerate brother and friend who was always giving of himself and looking out for others. He was exceptional in how he connected with so many people. In many ways, Gary was a strong, strong man who is now resting in peace with his God throughout eternity. At Gary's request, there will be no viewing, funeral or memorial service. PER INGVALD MADSEN Passed on July 11, 2020, at his home in Glenshaw. After nearly four score, this student, wrestler, soldier, railroader,technowiz, volunteer and father joined the love of his life, his late wife of 40 years, Marita Madsen. Born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on November 19, 1940, to Ingvald and Marie (Arnold) Madsen, he moved often due to his father's military assignments prior to and during World War II.' His parents settled in the North Hills of Pittsburgh after the war and Per graduated from Shaler High School in 1958 where he excelled in wrestling and football. He first attended Virginia Military Institute for two years before transferring to the United States Military Academy at West Point graduating in 1964. Per was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. His soldiering took him throughout the world multiple assignments in Europe, multiple bases across the United States and Vietnam. As an Airborne Ranger, he served his country with distinction in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor. During his third tour, he was seriously wounded for which he received the Purple Heart. He retired as a Major. After Per left active duty, he returned to his childhood home in Pittsburgh. Despite his disabilities, he made his hobby his livelihood through a career with Conrail serving as an industrial engineer that enabled him to play with real trains. Conrail introduced him to computers and technology which became a second passion. Following Conrail's dissolution, this second love led him to Allegheny County's Department of Information Technology where he retired as the Chief Information Officer in 2007. Per volunteered in his community and loved to help others. He was an active mason, serving with the John E. Mair Lodge No. 729. Per was active in the West Point Society of Western Pennsylvania and served as its secretary. His love of the Academy and his desire to share his experience led him to advocate, recruit and mentor aspiring West Point cadets with the West Point Field Force. Per was an avid reader and lifelong learner. He loved to tinker and could make anything work better. He enjoyed fishing, boating and photography. He was an avid model railroader. Per was very talkative and enjoyed a good conversation. Per loved his sons, Christian and Niels who survive him. Per loved teaching them how things work, fix a motor or to simply fish. He is also survived by his sister Dorthea, and brothers Roy and Rolf. He was predeceased by his sister Nancy Navarro. Friends will be received Saturday, July 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon at the BOCK FUNERAL HOME, LTD., 1500 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw followed by a graveside service at Mt. JOSEPH GARY "GUGGA" BAUMEISTER 5/31/29 - 7/16/20 Age 91, and a lifelong resident of Beechview, Gary passed peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2020. Gary was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Kathryn Baumeister and his wife, Emma (Hrydil) Baumeister, who was the love of his life for fifty-three years, before her death in 2006. Gary attended South Hills High School. He served in the Army in Germany during the Korean War and was employed for thirty-nine years as a driver for the Braun Baking Company. Gary enjoyed all sports. He spent time as a pitching prospect in the Cincinnati Reds organization. He later played organized softball for Dom's Café and Koppel's Café. He loved golf, but his passion was shooting pool. For years, he shot pool for Mr. Jack's Neighborhood (formerly Henry and Dolly's). Gary was the head basketball coach for many years at St. Catherine of Siena, St. Mary of the Mount and St. Justin High Schools. Gary is survived by his beloved daughter-like niece, Diane Rau, and his son-like friend, Thomas Milcarek; as well as other nieces and nephews. Gary was close to the Takach family. HOWARD DAVIS Age 83, formerly of Westwood, on Saturday, July 18, 2020. Beloved father of Gwen, Gayle, Marty, and Michael Davis and Michelle (Mark) Ash. Also survived by 15 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one late infant great-grandson, Wesley Leasure Crawford. Howard was an Army Veteran and he will be sadly missed by his family and friends. JOHN L. HUMPHREY, JR. Age 84, was called home on July 14, Pittsburgh, PA. He died peacefully in his sleep due to the latter stages of dementia. John was born May 22, 1936, in Pittsburgh, PA to Hazel (Skinner) and John L. Humphreys, Sr. He met and married the love of his life, the late Theresa (Boxley) in 1956 and together they had three children, Natalie Joy Mays, Jason (deceased) and Jeffrey (Nicole). They also have three grandchildren, Sarah Ellen Mays, Nicodemus and Theodore Humphrey; and one great-grandson, Xavier Mays. John served and was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force and was employed by Bell Telephone/Verizon for 37 years. He was an avid bowler, card player, dancer, skater, and loved to travel. When he was able to he attended Metropolitan Baptist Church. In addition to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild, he is survived by his brothers, Jesse and Darryl (Laquetia); sister, Beverly Johnson (Jake) and a host of in-laws, nieces and nephews.
