Carole was a graduate of East Allegheny High School, attended Robert Morris University, and was a Flight Attendant for U.S. Airways. She enjoyed traveling, exploring Europe, gardening, and cooking. HUTCHISON JOAN GAINE Age 83, a longtime resident of Pittsburgh, Joanie died Wednesday morning, December 26, 2018 in Mars, PA after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Her ?nal months and years were made very comfortable thanks to the efforts of caregivers at Rose Crest Assisted Living and Hospice. Joan Ann Gaine was born on June 1, 1935 in Neptune City, NJ to immigrants John Gaine and Elizabeth Fitzgerald Gaine of Kenmare, Kerry, Ireland. She attended St. Rose's High School, New Rochelle College, and Sorbonne University in Paris. Shortly after college, Joan took a job with the newly formed CIA as a French interpreter and also taught French to students at Blessed Sacrament School. She married Robert Hutchison in 1955 and became a loving and gracious mother of ?ve children in Chevy Chase, MD. In 1969, the family moved to Pittsburgh, PA and built a house in the Fox Chapel area. Besides raising the ?ve children and several dogs, Joanie cared for grandparents, worked for years in the ?nancial services industry including, Prudential Bache Securities, Continental Tax Services, and Bill Few Associates. She always kept active and won many awards at the Pittsburgh Field Club for golf, tennis, and paddle tennis. Anyone living in the area would remember her home as being open, inviting, loving, and she was gracious to all who entered. Her infectious optimism and upbeat personality would start at the crack of dawn and last all day long. Inspired by Steelers victories, she coined the phrase: Have a Super Bowl Day! Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Robert N. KEENER MATTHEW DAX It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Matthew Dax Keener, who was known to most as Wheelz. Matt left an imprint on the lives of all he met for the 43 wonderful years he was with us here. Matt loved the city of Pittsburgh, to which he relocated in 2001. It was here he found his love for craft beer and all Pittsburgh sports teams, even the Pirates. He enjoyed spending time with his close friends, who have truly become members of the family. Matt placed the highest priority on caring for others and his close friends, many of whom grew up with him back home, where he forged lifelong friendships at Rocky Grove High School in Franklin, PA. Matt loved live music, dirt track racing, and gol?ng with his buddies, a sport he loved since high school. At the end of his beautiful life, he continued this legacy of caring through organ donation with CORE, changing the lives of at least six people across the country. Matt is survived by his wife of two years, Lori (Farnsworth), originally from Erie, PA. In May of this year, they welcomed a beautiful baby boy, Ryan William. Also surviving are Matthew's mother, Christine Fillgrove; grandmother, Jane LaKari; and several loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws; he was also an amazing uncle to eight nieces and nephews, two of which proudly call him their Godfather. RACE JOSEPH Age 97, of Whitaker, most recently of St. Barnabas in Gibsonia, went to be with the Lord on December 26, 2018, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Adelaide, of 67 years; his daughters, Jane (Ron) Miller and Karen (Mike) Kulak; his grandchildren, Andrew (Sarah), Meredith, and Jordan; and a great-grandson, Caleb. He was the youngest of nine children. Joe served in the Army Air Corps in England during WWII, and upon returning worked at US Steel, Homestead Works as barge coordinator for 40 years. He will be remembered for his constant devotion to his family and friends. He was an active lifelong member of Whitaker United Methodist Church from serving on every committee, to painting every room in the church. In his retirement years, he made beautiful stained glass creations for family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him. Family and friends will be received at Whitaker U. M. KUCHLER MARGARET J. "PEG" Age 95, Phoenix, AZ, formerly of Pittsburgh, passed peacefully on December 21, 2018. Wife of the late William P. Kuchler; beloved mother of Keith P. Kuchler. Peg got married late in life because she was too busy dancing. She did not hold back her opinion and had a knack for telling it like it is. Peg told the truth even if it was not what you wanted to hear. Many people's lives were touched by Peg's creativity and attention to detail. Her love of sewing draperies and clothes were her main passions along with a successful wallpapering business. Whether she was cooking incredible meals or pulling weeds in the front yard, her focus was unwavering. Valuable lessons have been learned from Peg in her 95 years, among them: Compound interest, cleaning shirt collars, baking killer cakes and pies, and eating Vicks Vapo Rub. SHEARER DEBRA Age 62, died of lung cancer on December 12, 2018, in Fountain, Colorado. Debbie was born September 16, 1956, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Thomas and Dolores Shearer. Debbie worked for over 30 years as a school bus driver in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh. She was a huge Steelers fan and enjoyed watching games with friends and ringing the bell in the front yard when they scored a touchdown. She and her friends loved going on adventures together, but she never went anywhere without her picnic basket, which was usually full of beer. She loved her family and spending time with her many nieces and nephews. She eventually moved to Fountain, Colorado, and worked as a school bus driver there as well. She is survived by her sister, Beverly Halvorson (and her husband Oscar), of Fountain, Colorado; her brother, Thomas Shearer of Dayton, Ohio; and nieces, Cristina Gallager (and her husband Shawn) of Dayton, Ohio, Jessica Stonerock (and her husband Zach) of Lamar, Colorado, and Tabitha Hollis (and her husband Tom) of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. Debbie had several great- nieces and one great-nephew, Payton, Dallis, Kaylie and Dalton. Debbie was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Dolores Shearer; and her partner, John Michalski. There will be a small memorial service held in the spring of 2019, in Pittsburgh, with a date yet to be determined. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society. VALLIANT PETER Age 92, formerly of Ross Twp., fell asleep in the Lord on Wednesday, December 26, 2018. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen (Kastanis); and is survived by daughter Harriet; son, Gerri (Paula Balouris); and granddaughters, Eleni, Maria (Haralambos) Papas, Alexandra, Anna (Andrew) Abboud; and great-grandson, Nikolas Papas. He is also survived by his sisters, Tasoula Lagousis and Mamoula Voutsinas of Kefalonia, Greece. He was born in the town of Farsa on the island of Kefalonia, Greece, where he worked on boats with his cousins and uncles from an early age. After extensive travel around the world as a captain in the Greek Merchant Marines, he emigrated to the United States in 1950. He ?rst settled in Pittsburgh as a bridge painter, and then as the owner of several restaurants, which he opened with his wife Helen, whom he married on June 27, 1954 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, of which he was a lifelong member. Peter and Helen ?rst opened a restaurant in the Strip District, and later built and opened Valliant's Dairynow Valliant's Diner50 years ago on December 13, 1968. Even in his retirement, Peter continued to work at the restaurant, connecting with customers, many of whom he had known for over 40 years. He was gifted with a quick joke or story of his travel adventures, and a remarkable ability to welcome and remember details of all those who passed through the Diner's doors. After high school, he served in the US Army during the Korean War. After the army, he attended the Art Institute, and then worked for People's Natural Gas Company. Gary earned a BS degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Syria Temple. MARCHUK KATHLEEN M. Age 65, of Cranberry Twp., passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 while under the care of Good Samaritan Hospice in Wexford. Born July 24, 1953 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of Rose Marie Bush Brennen and the late Robert T. Brennen. Kathleen was a member of St. Ferdinand Catholic Church. She worked as an LPN for St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh from 1972 to 2001. She also held positions at the Verland Foundation in Sewickley for two years and U.P.M.C. Passavant Hospital in Cranberry for a year. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband, Nicholas J. Marchuk; her mother, Rose Marie Brennen of Shaler Twp.; her children, Nicholas R. Marchuk of Crafton, and Matthew J. Marchuk of Erie; her brother, Robert Brennen and his companion, Jeannie Gode, of Bridgeville; her niece, Tori Brennen; and her sisters, Mary Pat and Margaret. HENDRICKS GREGORY LEE Age 61, of Penn Hills, passed away suddenly on Thursday, December 27, 2018. Beloved Husband of Donna (Terry) Hendricks; stepfather of Lawrence (?ancée, Rachel Hutchinson) Russo and Alex Russo; brother of Douglas (Sharon) Hendricks; brother- in-law of Robert (Judi) Terry and Jim (Michelle) Terry; uncle of Megan, Molly, Mackenzie, Allison, Ryan, and Cecelia; great-uncle of Keira. Greg was employed for over 25 years by Penn Hills School District. He enjoyed reading, hunting, landscaping, and his family. He will be remembered as being very thoughtful and living life to its fullest.
