OPINA JOAN ELIZABETH (WALTERS) Monday, August 27, 2018, loving wife, mother of three children, and grandmother of nine grandchildren, passed away at the age of 74. Joan was born on November 11, 1943 in New Kensington, PA to Benjamin and Isabella (Balmer) Walters. She grew up in the coal mining town of Logan's Ferry and enjoyed spending time with her older brother, Robert (Bob), and many friends and cousins. Joan graduated from Plum Senior High School in 1961, where she was head majorette and involved in many clubs and activities. On February 27, 1965, she married her high school sweetheart, Michael (Mike) Opina, and their love for each other endures to this day. They raised one son, Brian, and two daughters, Amy and Michele. As a stay-at-home mom, Joan played an instrumental role in raising her children, and was always there for them, yet still found time to volunteer within the community. She was active in the PTA, where she was the District Cultural Arts Chair for Allegheny County and later awarded a lifetime membership from the national PTA organization. Joan returned to the Plum Borough School District, where she worked as an aide in the special education department. She later worked as a receptionist at Action Industries for ten years. Joan had a passion for people and had many friendships. She seemed to touch the lives of everyone she encountered and left a lasting impression of kindness, class and style. Despite several health challenges over the years, Joan always maintained a positive attitude and was an inspiration to others. As a breast cancer survivor of 25 years, she was active in cancer support groups and helping others struggling with disease. Joan had fun wherever she went and was often the life of the party. She also enjoyed music, dancing, camping at Pymatuning Lake, family vacations at the beach and a glass of good Chardonnay. Affectionately known as "GJ" to her nine grandchildren, she watched them grow into young adults and was most proud of each of them and their many accomplishments. In February of 2015, Joan and Mike celebrated 50 years of marriage in front of 100 friends and family, where each of her grandchildren spoke and expressed their love and reverence to her. Joan was preceded in death by her father, Benjamin, and her mother, Isabella ("Bella"). She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Mike; her brother, Bob Walters (Sharon) of Boise, Idaho; her son, Brian Opina (Tina) of Plum; her daughter, Amy Tysarczyk (Mike) of Fairfax, VA, and her daughter, Michele Gallagher (Shawn) of Plum; her grandchildren, Melissa, Michael and Maura Opina, Eric, Mia and Ivan Tysarczyk, Ryan, Tyler and Dylan Gallagher; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Friends will be received on Thursday, August 30th from 1 to 9 p.m., at SOXMAN FUNERAL HOME, 7450 Saltsburg Rd., (at Universal Road) Penn Hills, where a Blessing Service will be held on Friday at noon. Interment will follow at Plum Creek Cemetery in Plum. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb

KRIZAN RUTH ELEANOR (MacDONALD) Born May 26, 1939, died August 26, 2018, of Forest Hills. Ruth was born the 11th of 12 children in a sprawling German Scotch-Irish family in Ridgway, PA. She was nurtured by the raucous love of 11 brothers and sisters whose embrace of life informed all that she did as nurse, wife, and mother. She helped bring hundreds of babies into the world as an Ob-Gyn nurse in Ridgway and Pittsburgh, and spent the last 15 years of her nursing career at The Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf. She cared for everyone who needed help, welcoming her extended family into her home for as long as they needed whenever they asked. She was never too busy for anyone. During a visit to Pittsburgh in the late 1960s to help care for her niece, she was introduced to the man who became the love of her life. She married Bill Krizan and doted on him until she was no longer able. Even after Alzheimer's disease stole so much of Ruth, she always lit up when Bill would visit her. Bill and Ruth raised three children, Kate (Kendall Clark), Mary (Dan Dowds), and Dave (Cheryl Stump); and were blessed by eight grandchildren. Ruth taught her children selfless love and perseverance, irreverence and joy. Above all, Ruth was kind, quick to laugh and to reassure, and always willing to help people navigate life's challenges. She was a gracious hostess, made an oustanding Southern Comfort manhattan, and was very stylish. She was a devout Roman Catholic. Ruth has been-and will continue to be-dearly missed by everyone who knew her. She was a remarkably selfless woman who made the lives of those she knew and loved better by always being her wonderful self. In lieu of flowers, Ruth's family asks that tribute gifts be made to the Alzheimer's Association: alz.org. Mass cards may be sent to St. Maurice's parish in Forest Hills, PA. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 1 at 11 a.m. at St. Maurice Church. Arrangements by the THOMAS L. NIED FUNERAL HOME, INC. Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
