He enjoyed retirement by pursuing his love of travel, learning computer skills, spending time with his family and friends, and serving as president of Dormont AARP. CROWE JOHN M., SR. Age 76 of Upper St. Clair passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, August 25th, 2018. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 50 years, Beverly M. Crowe; loving father of Stephen T. Crowe and the late John M. Crowe Jr.; dear brother of Tom (Liz) Crowe, Nina (John) Theys, Donna (Matt) Griffin, Cathy (Raymond) Fleishauer, Joanne Reilly, Nancy (Keith) Taylor, Carolyn Crowe, and Carl (Ruth) Crowe; he is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. John enlisted in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard at the age of 21, beginning his military career in Company A 28th Signal Battalion. He was quickly promoted to First Sergeant and served Company A for many years. He was then promoted the rank of Command Sergeant Major, where his responsibility grew to four companies of the battalion. Sergeant Major Crowe was then reassigned to the division support command in Harrisburg, PA. He then returned and retired as Command Sargent Major of the 28th Signal Battalion after proudly serving his county for over 38 years. John was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 228 of Bethel Park, where he served as quartermaster. Some of John's favorite activities included drawing, antique cars and spending time outdoors. As one of nine children, he regularly hosted family gatherings at his house and loved his family dearly. Tammy recently received the Steel, Rock and Dirt Award by the Western Pennsylvania Operating Engineers Joint Apprenticeship and Training Program in recognition of her services and dedication in preparing future generations of Operating Engineers. Tammy served a member of the Board of Trustees from May 2009 - February 2018 as well as the Joint Apprenticeship Committee from April 2011 - February 2018. VANDERVEN NED STUART Of Pittsburgh died on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at age 86 at the Willows at Presbyterian Senior Care in Oakmont. Born in Michigan, he was the first son of the late Stuart T. VanderVen and Ruth VanderVen. Ned attended Michigan public schools, graduated from Harvard University, and earned a doctorate in Physics from Princeton University. With his wife Karen, he moved to Pittsburgh in 1961 where he joined the Physics faculty at Carnegie-Mellon University, then the Carnegie Institute of Technology. As an experimental physicist, his work focused on low temperature solid state physics and the physics of musical sound. He retired as Professor Emeritus of Physics in 2000. Ned had many interests including athletics and music. A cyclist, he served as President of the Allegheny Cycling Association. He enjoyed classical music, played the piano, and was on the Board of the Renaissance and Baroque Society. His wife, Karen, survives as do his twin children, Elizabeth R. and M. Edwin. He leaves a brother, Tom (Cyndi) of Florida, a sister, Mary Schwark (William) of Michigan, and numerous nieces and nephews. A brother Jack (Marion) predeceased him.
