DOUGLAS BODIE On Saturday, March 24, 2018, following a long life lived with purpose and zeal, went home to be with the Lord. Bodie was born December 31, 1924, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was five years old at the beginning of the Great Depression, and determined at the age of eight that he would pursue a PhD in Chemistry and teach. He began his studies at Tulane University at the age of 15, and graduated in absentia at 18 because he was at Columbia University attending officer training school after joining the Navy as part of the war effort. He served from 1943-1946, and was the youngest officer on a ship of 3,000 men, the battleship South Dakota, which saw action in the Pacific Theater. While in the navy he married his wife of 72 years, Gladys Backstrom, also born and raised in New Orleans. They began a family while he finished his education by completing his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Illinois at the age of 24. Their eldest daughter, Judy (Bill), was born in New Orleans while Bodie was completing a Master's degree at Tulane, their second child, son, Bruce (Loretta), was born in Champaign-Urbana near the completion of doctoral studies at the U of I, the second daughter, Sharon (Scott), was born in State College during the period of his first teaching job from 1949-52, and the third daughter, Jan, was born shortly after having moved to the University of Pittsburgh in 1952, where he taught and did research for the remainder of his career. He loved travel, visiting 60 countries well into his eighties, and teaching as a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Leeds (England) 1954-55, Visiting Professor, Osaka University (Japan) 1970, and Visiting Professor for several summers in Yugoslavia. He published numerous professional articles and several books, including a senior level chemistry book used in universities around the world for 49 years. Never one to be idle, he enjoyed a number of leisure activities including skiing, sailing, scuba diving, swimming (a mile several times a week for over 50 years) and backpacking. He had numerous health setbacks that might have sidelined one less determined, including two open heart surgeries, a stroke and a broken knee, yet until December, 2017 when he turned 93, he was driving himself to the gym six days a week either to swim or use the machines. In December, his decline began in earnest with dizziness and weakness which was diagnosed as a heart attack. The loss of his wife on January 24, two months to the day prior to his death, likely hastened his decline, though his determination remained as strong as ever to the last. In addition to their four children, the legacy of Bodie and Gladys includes nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. A joint Memorial Service for Gladys and Bodie will be held at a later date.
