GEZICH Sr. EMILY, CDP Age 93, of McCandless Township, died Wednesday, February 14, 2018, in the 77th year of her religious life as a Sister of Divine Providence. The daughter of Ferdinand “Fred” Gezich and Anna Lukac, Sister Emily entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence from Assumption Parish in Ernest, PA. She ministered in education, both as teacher and High School Principal, and in pastoral ministry with the elderly, orphans, single mothers, and youth. Sister Emily's ministries took her to Puerto Rico, Arizona, Mexico, New Mexico, and Michigan, as well as the Pittsburgh area. Sister Emily earned her Bachelor's degree in education from Duquesne University (cum laude), and her Master's degree from New York University. She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings: Joseph, Fred, John and Theresa Gezich, Agnes Vargo, Kathryn Levitz, Ann Kurnat (Plumb), Elizabeth Zielinski and Loretta Norman. Sister Emily is survived by nieces and nephews, and the Associates and Sisters of Divine Providence. Viewing will take place at Providence Heights on Friday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Mother of Divine Providence Chapel. PASTORE RUTH Of White Oak, formerly of Clairton, passed from this life into the loving arms of her Lord on February 15, 2018, after a decade of courageously battling cancer. She was born in Philadelphia the daughter of the late Daniel and Rose (Gentile) Pastore. Ruth's love of community defined her. She was a selfless public servant, leader, mentor and advocate for the greater good. She dedicated her life to the Clairton Crime Watch and serving the Democratic 45th Senatorial District as a Democratic State Community Member. She loved being a mom and being with her family. She enjoyed going to political events, Tony Bennett concerts and dancing. She had a taste for Italian food, banana splits and, especially Mallow Cups. She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Anthony Picciafoco, Jr.; and brothers, Daniel and Dominic Pastore. PELUSO RICHARD R. Age 84, of Shaler Twp. on February 14, 2018. Born on FDR's inauguration day, March 3, 1933 from humble beginnings in Pittsburgh's “Little Italy” Bloomfield, Richard was a devout Catholic and a proud alumnus of Pittsburgh's Central Catholic High School. His athletic abilities and love of sports lead to a semi pro football career as a starting right tackle with the Bloomfield Rams during the Johnny Unitas era. However, he felt his true calling was to dedicate his life to the betterment others inclusive of family, friends and community thus carrying over into his professional endeavors. His passionate democratic convictions influenced him to become a Union Steward, Business Agent, Secretary Treasurer for the Teamsters local 249. He was recognized for outstanding accomplishments and dedication at Pittsburgh's local 249 and was appointed as the Director of the Public Employees Division of the Eastern Conference of Teamsters; championing the welfare of laborers, truck drivers, educators, police, firefighters, and public workers for fair pay, benefits, job security and safety encompassing the entire east coast. Long into his retirement he was still an active consultant and advisor for the Teamsters. Richard was a loyal husband, adored father, revered grandfather, and favorite uncle. In addition to his love of the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins, he had a child-like affinity for parades, fireworks, hot dogs, convertible cars, military ships, and Gus and Yaya's on the North Shore. Richard also had a creative side. He was a self-taught accomplished woodworking craftsman who could always be found working joyfully and diligently well past the dinner hours.He was also a gifted vocalist; his renditions of Frank Sinatra songs would capture the whole room. After a lifetime dodging death from truck explosions, burning buildings, floods, crash landings, a heart attack, home improvement accidents, pancreatic cancer, and five children, our Richard has finally found peace on February 14, 2018 after his battle with Parkinson's Disease. Son of the late Paolina and Nicola Peluso. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Toni and precious daughter, Gina Marie, as well as his siblings, Frank (survived by Willie), Josephine (John Sicilia), Victor (Florence and Ida), Rose (Peter Ficarri), Albert (Joan), Gloria (Eugene Mazzotta), Donald (Patricia and survived by Kathy). Richard loved and had a special place in his heart for the late Rosemarie Thomas and her family. In the last few years, he was in the devoted care of his daughter, Nancy and son-in-law, Vincent La Monica and their daughters, Angelina, Gina and Maria. Also survived by his loving sons, Nicholas of North Carolina, Richard and Jeffery (Amy) Peluso of McCandless; and their 13 children, Nicholas, Kristy, Thomas, Jonathon, Rick, Anthony, Sal, John, Jenna, Adam and Gianna Peluso, Michelle (Brian) Couch, and Nina (Matt) Donnelly; and six great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Isabella Peluso, Daylon and Kameryn Mills, Kye, Cade and Maverick Couch. DURDEN OLIVER DENNIS III Age 42, of Allison Park, unexpectedly on Monday, February 12, 2018. Beloved husband of Ellen L. (Dietrick) Durden; son of Helen Roseann Moore and the late Oliver D. Durden, Jr.; loving father of Olivia and Gavin; brother of Julian (Chandra) Durden and Marla Moore; grandson of Dora Moore; and nephew of Lawrence (Donella) Durden. Oliver enjoyed his childhood growing up in Stanton Heights in Pittsburgh. He played football as a kid at the Kingsley Center and carried that on through high school. He attended Peabody High School as a proud student of the public safety program, surrounded by incredible teachers and coaches. Before he graduated high school, he enlisted as a reservist in the Army. Once he returned from basic training, the love story began with his wife, Ellen. The two married a few years later and enjoyed several years together with their two children. Oliver's life journey was filled with countless volunteer commitments including service at the Swissvale Fire Department, Guyasuta Fire Department, and Pleasant Hills Fire Department. His passion for service carried his professional career from the Wilkinsburg Fire Department, the City of Pittsburgh Police Department, Virginia Beach Fire Department, Washington DC Fire Department, and back to his home in Pittsburgh as an Allegheny County Police Officer. He was committed to helping others and being a positive role model to those around him. SHOEMAKER MERCEDES G. Age 94, of Upper St. Clair, on Wednesday, February 14, 2018. She was born on October 2, 1923, in Chicago, IL, daughter of the late John J. Golden and Sallanah Helen Hawkins Golden. Wife of the late G. Albert Shoemaker, retired President of Consolidation Coal Company, whom she married on March 18, 1967. Mr. Shoemaker died on December 7, 1990. She was a graduate of Purdue University in 1945 with a BS in Economics, and then took some additional elective courses at Robert Morris and the University of Pittsburgh. While in college, she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and served as an officer in the chapter. She continued to be active in the alumna organization and also serving on the Advisory Board of the Carnegie Mellon Chapter and later on House Corporation of the University of Pittsburgh Chapter. Merdie worked for US Steel, as did her father, in Gary, IN and then Pittsburgh for over 20 years. Mr. Shoemaker was a very active Penn State Alum and kept Mercedes involved in all of his affairs, both business and volunteer activities. As a result, her activities at Penn State involved working with the annual Ethics Lecture in the College of Business Administration and the annual Mineral Engineering Lecture in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences for the Penn State Capital Campaign. Mercedes was elected an Honorary Penn State Alum in the year 2000. She served for nine years on the Board of Directors of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and was elected Emerita Director of the Seminary Board and served on three committees including the Capital Campaign. Merdie served on the Board of Directors of the Coalition for Christian Education, headquartered in Pittsburgh, serving college campuses in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. FADER MARY HELENE (VAN LOAN) “DIZ” Died peacefully at her home in Ben Avon Heights on February 12, 2018. She was 104 years old. Diz was born and raised in Athens, New York. She was the daughter of Eugene Merritt Van Loan and Helene Denoe Lassen Van Loan, and the older sister of Jane Eleanor Erickson and Eugene Merritt Van Loan, Jr. She married William Lewis Fader (deceased December 10, 1991) from Sewickley, Pennsylvania on May 20, 1939. She had five children: Connie (deceased), Peter, Tim, John and Laurie. She also had 12 grandchildren, 28 great- grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Diz attended Wellesley College where she was a member of the Classics Society and played on the varsity tennis team. She graduated from Wellesley in 1935 with a degree in Anthropology. For much of her life she was a faithful member of the Community Presbyterian Church of Ben Avon. She was fully devoted to the life of her family, supporting her husband and raising her children. She was also involved in various community activities throughout her life: Wellesley Club, 20th Century Club, garden clubs, book clubs, the American Red Cross, and Knit and Sip at the Anchor & Anvil. She was a longtime member of the Shannopin Country Club. She was well known in the community for her quick wit. Diz loved sports of many kinds. She was a keen tennis player and played well into her 80's. She also enjoyed badminton, bowling, golf, sailing, swimming, skiing, and snowshoeing. Other interests included gourmet cooking, properly played bridge, study-travel, reading, armchair archeology, and savvy investing in the stock market. Friends and family are welcome to a memorial service celebrating her life on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 10 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church of Ben Avon, 7501 Church Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15202. SANTICOLA FRANCIS “BUTCH” Age 74, of Moon Township. Passed away on February 15, 2018. He was born in Oakmont, on November 13, 1943, the son of the late Marius and Agnes (Rantucci) Santicola. Butch grew up in Oakmont and earned his B.S. from I.U.P. where he was a proud member of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. He obtained his Master's from the University of Pittsburgh. He began his career as a teacher in the Aliquippa School District where he was the President of the Aliquippa Education Association. He eventually went on to work as the Director of Organizing & Communications for the Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA), where he retired after 43 years. He was an active member of St. Margaret Mary Parish, Moon Twp. Butch was an officer of National Staff Organization, the President of PSEA Staff Organization, a former member of the board of directors for the charitable group The Emmaus Community of Pittsburgh, a former Chairman of the Moon Twp. Democratic Party, and was the current host of The Education Watchdog, a syndicated show as part of the Union Edge Laborers Talk Radio. Butch was a tireless advocate for teachers and laborers everywhere and an energized, engaging and unwavering person who will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Butch was honored with the Adler Friend of Education award in 2017. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, April (Benasutti) Santicola. He was the proud father of two children: Michael F. Santicola (Michele) of Moon Twp. and Amy (Santicola) Gift of Moon Twp.; loving Papa to four grandchildren: Anna Gift, Zachary Gift, Michael M. Santicola and Sarah Santicola. He is also survived by brothers, Ronald Santicola and Henry Santicola; and sister, Judy Leger; and sister-in-law, Michele Benasutti; as well as many very special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Butch was a coach and ardent supporter of all his children's activities and became an enthusiastic supporter of his grandchildren's activities. In addition to his parents, Butch was preceded in death by a brother, Marius Santicola, Jr.; and an infant son, Scott. Friends will be received on Sunday, February 18, 2018, from 1-5 p.m. and Monday, February 19, 2018, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the HUNTSMAN FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES OF MOON TWP. (1522 Coraopolis Hts. Rd.) Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary Parish, Moon Twp. (Everyone please meet at the church.) Interment will follow in Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Hopewell Twp.
