KVORJAK ALBERT R. Of Braddock Hills, age 92, on Independence Day, July 4, 2013. Devoted husband of Grace P. (Lichka) Kvorjak for 66 years; loving father of Grace Kvorjak, Albert R. Kvorjak, Jr (Frances). and the late Carol Kennell (surviving spouse, Tom); dear grandfather of Patrick Kennell, Mark, Michael and Matthew Kvorjak; also survived by nieces and nephews. Al was the last survivor of ten brothers and sisters. Al was a WWII Army Air Corps veteran with the rank of Master Sergeant. He served as Crew Chief on the B-24 known as "The Sod Buster". For his meritorious service, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, along with numerous other medals. After WWII, he became employed at the Edgar Thomson Plant of US Steel and later graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, where he attended on the G.I. Bill. He retired from US Steel as the Supervisor of Power and Fuel at the E.T. Plant. Al also served as a member of the Braddock Hills Borough Council for 8 years and as President of the Braddock Hills Senior Citizens for 15 years. ONDECHEK JOSEPH J. Age 83, of Duquesne, on July 3, 2013. Son of the late Joseph and Helen (Sabol) Ondechek and stepson of the late Geraldine F. (DeWitt) Ondechek. He was a retired foreman for US Steel, Homestead Works Structural Department. After retiring, he drove a schoolbus for Bamford Motor Express. He proudly served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. During his illness, he was loved and cared for by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Beloved husband of 60 years to Helen C. SHANABARGER J. LEWIS "JAY" Age 91, passed away at home on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, in Palm Coast, FL, formerly of Dormont for 63 years. Beloved husband for 67 years of Mary Kathryn “Sunny” Shanabarger; devoted father of Ellen Kay Stucky (Richard) and Janet Susan Smith; brother of the late Betty Ellen Lochner. Jay was born October 15, 1921 in Point Marion, PA, a son of the late Alvin H. and Edna (Miller) Shanabarger. He graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy, Front Royal, VA and attended West Virginia University. A WWII Air Force veteran, Jay served in New Guinea for 4 years and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge with 2 Oak Leaves and the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 3 Bronze stars. After returning from overseas, he married Mary Kathryn Van Gilder in 1946. He worked at Crucible Steel and J & L Steel Co. until he retired. Jay was past commander of McCormick-Dorman VFW post #694, was a member of the American Legion, was a charter member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Fraternal Order of Elks Lodge # 2213. In addition, he was a member of the Dormont Volunteer Fireman Association from 1960-1986 and served as President from 1972-1986. She also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity. She enjoyed shopping, collecting antiques, jewelry, cooking, and taking good care of her family. Mrs. Marcantonio retired after many years as Office Manager for AK Valley Chiropractors in Lower Burrell. She is survived by her husband; son, John Paul Marcantonio, VA, daughter, Gina (Joseph) Sacriponte, Pittsburgh; two sisters, Beatrice (Ron) Wheeler, New Kensington, Darlene Kuhn, Export. (QUERIO) "BUNNY" Age 85, a resident of the Commons at Stonebrook Village in Pittsburgh, McCandless Township, passed away on Tuesday, July 2, 2013, while under the care of UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. Born June 13, 1928 in Allentown, PA, she was the daughter of the late Mrs. Ruth (Smith) Querio; she leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving daughter, Paula Jean Micola; her grandson, Dana Edward Boehmer; her three great-grandchildren, Dana Elizabeth (Boehmer) Carver, Justin Paul Boehmer and Courtney Nicole Boehmer and her three great- great-grandchildren. In addition to her mother, Bunny was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Paul Micola, who passed away on January 23, 2004 and her dear son, Dana Jon Micola, who passed away on April 16, 1966 while serving his country during Vietnam in the U.S. Army. HELWIG CATHERINE “KATE” HALL 89, of West Chester and formerly of Ocean Pines, MD, passed away on June 30, 2013 at Barclay Friends Nursing Home in West Chester, PA. Born in June, 1924, in Oakmont, PA, Kate was the daughter of Edna McFadgen and Daniel Hall, both deceased. Kate was an avid bridge player with a generous and magnetic personality who strongly influenced those who knew and loved her. She was a wonderful cook who loved to entertain. She traveled the world, living in Tokyo, Japan and Seoul Korea, as well as Ocean Pines, MD, The Villages, FL and Pittsburgh, PA. Kate instilled in her children and grandchildren a love of travel, fine food and entertaining. She was the beloved wife of 62 years of the late Ralph W. Helwig of Millersburg, PA, who preceded her in death in 2007. They met at Gulf Research, where they were both working, during World War II. Kate was the loving mother of Ralph D. Helwig, M. William Helwig, Catherine H. Schneider and Lee H. Broderick; loving grandmother of Alise W. Baer, William F. Broderick and Robert M. Broderick; and beloved sister of Daniel R. Hall.
