HELFER CHARLOTTE Who grew up in Squirrel Hill and was a longtime resident of Wilkins Township, Pennsylvania, September 5, 2017, passed away in south Florida from health complications. She was 86 years old. Charlotte graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Teaching with a certification in Special Education from the University of Pittsburgh. She devoted over 40 years teaching students with disabilities for the Allegheny County Schools (Intermediate Unit) and continued to substitute teach even after she retired. Her enthusiasm for helping young people reflected her overall love of life and passion for getting the most out of every moment, whether through travel, swimming, tennis, dancing, theater, mahjong, or hosting holiday meals for family and friends. She was a devoted fan of all Pittsburgh sports teams. After moving to the Wynmoor community in south Florida, she joined the local Pennsylvania club and quickly earned a following of fellow Steelers fans who enjoyed watching her do splits on the floor after Pittsburgh victories. Charlotte also was a member of Beth Shalom Synagogue in Squirrel Hill, more recently joined Liberal Jewish Temple in Coconut Creek, Florida, and was very active in Hadassah and National Council of Jewish Women. Charlotte was one of two daughters born to Sarah and David Cooper (both of blessed memory). Her sister, Doris Cooper Wiener (of blessed memory), passed away in 1960. She is survived by Jack Helfer, her high school sweetheart and spouse of 64 years, who continues to live in south Florida and deeply loved her. They had three children, Farrel, Ira, and Bryna, as well as four grandchildren, Dana (of blessed memory), David, Sarah, and Emily; and three great-grandchildren, Annabella, Aria, and Dante. ANDERSON PAUL BRACEY February 12, 1933 – September 4, 2017. Paul Anderson was born and raised in Pittsburgh, the son of Caroline Bracey Anderson and Edward Clair Anderson (both deceased). He was an adjunct professor of Literature at CCAC Allegheny Campus and Robert Morris University. His teaching career spanned 50 years. He was a graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School, the University of Pittsburgh where he took his undergraduate work and Auburn University where he received a Master's in Early English Literature. He was a longtime member of the MENSA Society, the Masons and the Shriners. He was an active member of Church of the Ascension in Oakland. He is survived by his wife, Peg; children, Paul, Robert, Elizabeth and Laura; and grandchildren, Clara and Caleb Anderson. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 9, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Church of the Ascension. BRODELL NORMA Of Boca Raton, Florida, formerly of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2017, at the age of 94. She was the beloved wife of Lawrence Brodell for over 71 years. Norma was born in Greensburg, PA on January 1, 1923, daughter of the late Sarah Goldstein Davis and William Davis. She grew up in Jeannette and graduated from Jeannette High School and attended the University of Pittsburgh. Beginning at a young age, Norma loved to work in the family grocery business. She remained actively involved in the business, Davis Supermarket, when it moved to Greensburg. She was the sister of the late Robert (Phyllis) Davis, Melva (late Mark) Weisberger and the late Stanford (Ada) Davis; and sister-in-law of Ann (late Lawrence) Ward. She was a most loved and devoted mother to Linda (Jeffrey) Reisner and the late Joanne (Jack) Alpern. Norma was adored by her grandchildren, Barbara Reisner (William Tompkins), Sharon Reisner- Rude (Michael Rude), Julie Alpern and David (Lisa) Alpern. She was the cherished great- grandmother of Owen Tompkins, Benjamin and Alexandra Rude and Noa and Joshua Alpern. Norma is also survived and loved by many nieces, nephews, and friends. FUSCO PATRICIA ANN (HOBAN) Age 81, of Moon Twp., died peacefully on September 6, 2017, at the Villa St. Joseph in Baden, Pennsylvania. She was born in Pittsburgh on June 25, 1936, the daughter of the late John P. and Henrietta (Quartz) Hoban. Patricia earned her BSN from Duquesne University in 1958. Upon graduation, she worked as an RN for the Visiting Nurse Association of Allegheny County. Patricia was a homemaker for almost 20 years. After the children were raised, she worked at Ohio Valley General Hospital, then for Dr. Elderton and finally for Travelers Insurance Company for ten years. Patricia was an active member of St. James Catholic Church, Sewickley. In addition to her parents, Patricia was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore M. Fusco in 1987, and a son, Richard Fusco in 1966. She is survived by her three children: David Fusco (Rochelle), Shaker Heights, OH, Lynn Davis (John), Moon Twp., Mary Beth Leeman (Nathan) Moon Twp.; seven grandchildren: Theodore, Alexandra, Caroline, Jacqueline, Joshua, William, Charlotte; a sister-in-law, Constance Butler; Duquesne University School of Nursing classmates, close friends and neighbors.
