She looked forward to her winter vacations in St. Petersburg, FL with her husband, Mario, over the years. She had a strong Catholic faith. Elizabeth spoke and wrote Italian fluently and would correspond with family in Italy often. Barbara was born April 19, 1932, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Norman and Ruth Schuck, of Mt. Lebanon. She was an employee in the credit department of Joseph Horne's Department Store. Barbara was a graduate of Carrick High School and lived her entire life in the Pittsburgh area. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Schuck. Always with a radiant smile and words of caring and concern for others, Barbara will be greatly missed by her loving family. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Arthur Bill Hupe; her children, David (Donna) Hupe, of Holland, Michigan, Sandra (Kenneth) Harmon, of Monroeville, Douglas (Linda) Hupe, of Penn Hills, and Darrin (Monika) Hupe, of Beaver; her nine loving grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; as well as various nieces and nephews. ROOT DAVID B. Age 80, of Erie, and formerly of Pittsburgh and Fairview, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 3, 2017, at Sunrise Senior Living following a five-year struggle with Alzheimer's. He was born in Erie on June 17, 1937, a son of the late Paul Bowman and Ethel Bond Root. David graduated in 1955 from the Taft School in Watertown, CT and then went on to graduate from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA. He was a second generation in the P.B. Root and Company in Erie that was established in 1923 which dealt with bonds, investments and real estate development. He then went on to work with his son at D.B. Root and Company in Pittsburgh as a financial consultant from 1988 to 2009. David enjoyed tennis, golf, skiing, squash, gardening, music and playing the clarinet and banjo. He also loved his friends and family and loved to travel. He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Erie Rotary Club, Kahkwa Club, Erie Club, Aviation Club, and while he lived in Pittsburgh, he was a member of Fox Chapel Golf Club, Pittsburgh Rotary Club, and Christ Church in Fox Chapel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul B. Root, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marjorie Delavern Root; four sons, David B. Root, Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Pittsburgh, Scott A. Root and his wife, Cocoa Carter, of Weston, MA, Brad B. Root and his wife, Holly, of Pittsburgh, and Eric D. Root and his wife, Gail, of Fairview; 11 grandchildren, Jesse, Alec, Sierra, Myles, Madison, Tucker, Bradly, Devon, Bowman, Charlie and Tyler; and many nieces and nephews. David was a loving, gentle man and his positive, can-do spirit will be missed. Athena is survived by her son, Nicholas and daugher-in-law, Ruth Keller, of Walnut Creek, CA. She was preceded in death by husband, Paul Palaio, of Coraopolis; brothers, Trefon and George Bakertges, of Aliquippa; and parents, Peter and Victoria Bakertges, of Aliquippa. Athena was born in Aliquippa on December 9, 1924, and was a graduate of Aliquippa High. In 1957, she married Paul, her husband of 47 years. They lived in Center Township and Coraopolis before moving to Sun City, AZ, where they truly loved their time in the Arizona sun. Athena enjoyed her last five years in California near her son and daughter-in-law. A traditional Greek Orthodox funeral was held at St. Haralambos in Sun City, AZ on July 28, 2017. RICKERT RACHEL SAPIENTE Age 43, on August 2, 2017, at her home in the Minneapolis neighborhood of St. Louis Park, after a fiercely-fought, three-year battle with triple negative breast cancer. Born April 10, 1974, in St. Louis, MO, seven minutes after her twin brother, Rachel was a graduate of Falk School, Peabody High School, and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Prior to the progression of her illness, she was the creative marketing manager for Sightpath Medical at its corporate headquarters in Bloomington, MN. Our Rachel was an excellent and devoted mother. She is survived by her cherished sons, Ethan Christopher and Elliott John Rickert. She loved them to the moon and back. She is also survived by their father and her caregiver, Brian Rickert; her parents, Rebecca Wallace of Pittsburgh, PA, and Dr. Ronald Sapiente of Marquette, MI; her twin, Andrew Wallace Sapiente (Rebecca Weidman) of Watertown, MA; aunt, Barbara Colaco (Dr. Rudy) of Cranford, NJ; uncle, John Sapiente (Pamela) of Naples, FL; great- aunt, Celia Demyan of Columbia, MD; great-uncle, Father Joseph Borodach of Bradenville, PA; and her dear cousins and in-laws.
