MUSULIN MICHAEL Age 91, of Glen Allen, VA, passed away April 21, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Melissa Kaufman; brothers, Robert and Nicholas; sisters, Natalie Kunkel and Helen Manko. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary; daughter, Anne; grandchildren, Mary Caglar, Mikey Kaufman, Itsy Caglar, Catherine Daisy Caglar, Cristina Kaufman; his brother, Rudy Musulin; sister, Mary Paulos; numerous nieces and nephews; and Fred Kaufman and his daughter, Erika. Michael proudly served in the Army during WWII, receiving a Purple Heart from injuries suffered at Anzio Beach, Italy. Mike was very proud of his Serbian heritage, and very strong in his Orthodox faith. He was a Professor of Pharmacy at West Virginia University, University of Pittsburgh, and the Medical College of Virginia. CHAFFO JOHN Age 57, of Murrysville, died Sunday, April 23, 2017. He was born August 20, 1959, in Pittsburgh, son of the late Larry and Margaret Miser Chaffo. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, Gary Chaffo, in 2016. John worked as a cement finisher and was a member of Operative Plasterers' and Cement Masons' International Association with Local Union 526. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Export. He was also an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 31 years, Susan Meyer Chaffo; two loving daughters, Amanda Lee and Allison Marie Chaffo; four siblings, Susan Comunale, Scott Chaffo, Lorraine (Dominic) Lagrotteria, Todd (Amy) Chaffo; and many loving nieces and nephews. It was a perfect position for someone with his trustworthiness. Dennis was an outdoors enthusiast and loved to visit his cabin in the woods, ride his quads, fish and boat. He also was proficient at being a handyman around his house, even designing the projects to be completed. GARDNER ROBERT EARL Age 97, of Pittsburgh, born in Indianapolis, IN, died on April 21, 2017. Survived by his wife of 73 years, Sylvia of Pittsburgh; two children, Lorraine Gardner (Peter Hogan) of Arlington, VA, and Marie Gardner of Washington, DC; two grandchildren, Gregory Hogan of Statesboro, GA, and Christina Hogan of Arlington, VA; brother of the late Cecil and Maxine Gardner. A veteran of WWII, he sailed with the US Navy on the U.S.S. Mizar, and then on a submarine in the Pacific. Following the war he earned a Master's of Fine Arts from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, and taught at the University of Oklahoma. He was fired from that position in 1951 for his refusal to sign McCarthy's loyalty oath; he said he had proved his loyalty by fighting for his country in WWII and did not need to sign a piece of paper. Carnegie-Mellon (then Carnegie Tech) hired him, no loyalty oath required, where he worked as Professor of Lithography for 31 years before retiring in 1984. He will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. BACKER ROY Age 86, of Canonsburg, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2017, in Golden Living Assisted Living. He was born May 31, 1930, in Highland Park, Michigan, the son of Oscar Backer and Ellen Sandberg Backer. On July 19, 1952, he married the love of his life, Charlotte Jane Sloan Backer, who survives. Mr. Backer was retired from Westinghouse, Inc., Atomic Energy Division, Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory Submarine Atomic Systems. Mr. Backer was a senior chemist and while working there was helping to build a "safer, more controllable atomic bomb." Mr. Backer was a man of strong faith and lived that faith daily. He, along with his wife Charlotte, were members of the Chartiers Hill UPC, Canonsburg where they transferred on March 21, 1972, from the Whitehall U.P. Church. Mr. Backer was in the church choir for over 30 years. He enjoyed taping the choir's music, photographing numerous church functions and then copying and sharing those events with the members of the congregation. Mr. Backer and his wife prepared the Communion Table for years. Mr. Backer volunteered in the community delivering meals to seniors (MOW Program). Mr. Backer, and his wife, as chemists were members of the American Chemical Society (ACS). He also belonged to the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh. As a member of these societies, he and his wife traveled to conferences around the country each year. When he would return from conferences he would hand out various items from the conferences to his friends at the church. Surviving, in addition to his loving wife, are two daughters, Joyce Sharon Backer of Maine and Jane Anne Backer of Florida, along with two grandchildren. In the hope that he could help others, Mr. Backer donated his body to the Humanity Gifts Registry. A memorial service will be held in his honor at the Chartiers Hill UPC on April 29, 2017, at 1:00 o'clock p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Backer's honor may be made to a charity of the donor's choosing.
