Al was a patriot who served honorably in the United States Army and spent some time stationed in Korea. He attended Carnegie Mellon University, where he acquired his Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgical Engineering which enabled him to have a long, fulfilling career working for two companies: U.S. Steel and Copperweld Steel. Al was a staunch humanitarian; volunteering with the Special Olympics, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, at the Cancer Ward in UPMC Shadyside Hospital, and Waverly Presbyterian Church. His mission of philanthropy extended to over 40 charities that he donated to on a monthly basis encompassing many causes ranging from groups that help children to Veterans to disease cure research, etc. Al was a man of the highest integrity and morals who lived very modestly and did his best to live a righteous life full of giving; a firm believer in the credo: "always make a conscious effort to help those who are less fortunate". He believed that one of life's greatest rewards was giving back to his community by lending a helping hand. His legacy is one of selflessness as he devoted his lifetime to helping other people, with a big heart full of empathy in regards to children, setting a shining example of what an ideal Christian is for all those who he interacted with. His faith and dedication to God was extremely important to him in his time on this earth. He will forever be missed and remembered by his children, grandchildren, family, and friends. RITCHIE SISTER MARGARET, RSM Sister Margaret Ritchie (Sister Mary Timothy), a Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 72 years, died at Mercy Hall, Convent of Mercy on Monday, March 20, 2017. Born in Lakeland, FL, she was 89 years old. Daughter of William and Catherine (Bennett) Ritchie, Sister Margaret entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Ignatius Parish in Chicago, IL. in 1944 and made final vows in 1951. Sister Margaret received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University) and a Master of Education degree from Boston College and a MS from Creighton University. She taught at various Catholic elementary schools in the Pittsburgh area such as St. Maurice in Forest Hills, St. Cyril of Alexandria, and St. Xavier in Latrobe. Sister Margaret also served as principal at Holy Family in Latrobe. From 1974 to 1986, Sister Margaret worked at Center of Hope Program at Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Monroeville, as Coordinator, then Director of Spiritual Programs; then at Mt. Mercy she directed retreats. From 1986-1991 she ministered at the Christian Brothers Retreat Center in Adamstown, MD as a staff member, retreat/spiritual director and Associate Director. For the next 2 years, she took her spiritual direction work into the hospitals at West Penn and Westmoreland Hospital. From 1993 until 2006, Sister Margaret ministered in the pastoral care department as Chaplain at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, FL. While in Florida, she embarked on a special mission in Haiti from January-March, 1997. She participated in Women to Women, a project connecting the women of Haiti with those in the U.S. and abroad to support the economic justice and recovery efforts of Haitian women. Sister Marie Celine Coan, who worked with Sister Margaret at Holy Cross Hospital, tells of Sister Margaret's special gifts in working with cancer patients. She considered 'healing touch' ministry an important part of her life, and brought help and consolation to so many. Upon returning to Pittsburgh in 2006, Sister Margaret was an active participant as Lector and Eucharistic Minister at our community liturgies and she continued her 'healing touch' ministry and prayer for all who requested it. Preceded in death by her parents and her sister Catherine Reeve, Sister Margaret is survived by her brother William (Jeanne) Ritchie of Chicago, IL; step-sister Anita Ritchie (Michael) Johnson of Statesville, NC; and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Sunday, March 26 from 1-8 p.m. at the Convent of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Avenue. FINCHAM RICHARD ALLEN Age 79, of McMurray, died on Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Broadmore Senior Living in Bridgeville. He was born on August 19, 1937, in Hill Station (Lawrence), Pennsylvania to the late Claude Fincham and Cecelia Visnosky. On July 12, 1959, he married Lorraine Gruden, who preceded him in death on July 16, 2016. Surviving are three sons, Richard M. (Michelle) Fincham of Cecil, Jon M. (Kyle) Fincham of Venetia, and Gregory A. Fincham of Canonsburg. Also surviving are grandchildren, Madeleine, Richard, Alexander, Adam, Emily, Luke, and Benjamin Fincham; sisters, Linda Kapustynski of Canonsburg and Kathy (David) Doane of Murrels Inlet, South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews. Richard was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a 30-year employee of Washington Steel Corporation, where he worked as a Class A1 Maintenance Electrician until his retirement in 1994. He pursued numerous interests throughout his active life, including building and operating ham radio, repairing electronics and machinery, target shooting and firearms, award-winning photography, assembling and upgrading computers, gardening, model building, reading, bird watching, playing bluegrass music (banjo and other instruments), and building, modifying and riding bicycles. In the summer and fall seasons, he enjoyed trips with his wife to the mountains. A favorite destination was Confluence, Pennsylvania, where he enjoyed the town and long bicycle journeys on the nearby trails. He was a dedicated husband and father, and he will be greatly missed by his family and all who loved him. Arrangements by BEINHAUER, 724-941-3211. He was the beloved son of the late John L. Koch, Jr., and the late Barbara Bethune Challis, formerly of Sewickley, PA; loving brother to Sarah C. Koch of Philadelphia, PA and John L. Koch III (Amelia Williams) of New Orleans, LA; adored uncle of Amelia C. Koch of Brooklyn, NY and John A. Koch of Washington, DC; honored nephew of Albin C. Koch (Harriet Woodworth) of Pasadena, CA and Sarah C. Wall (the late James T. Wall) of Birmingham, AL; loving first cousin to James T. Wall, Jr., (Margaret Eastwood) and to Challis W. Gamble of Birmingham, AL. He grew up in Ben Avon Heights, PA, attended the Avonworth School District as a youngster, and is a high school graduate of The Mercersburg Academy, '74, Mercersburg, PA. At Mercersburg, he excelled at track and field, was a member of the ski club, sang in the chorale with his beautiful tenor, and learned how to play the piano. He attended college at Denison University in Granville, OH where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and majored in history. After graduating from Denison in 1978, he moved to Miami, FL and received his Master's degree in Hotel and Restaurant Administration from Florida International University. He began his career with Pannell Kerr Forster Hospitality Consultants, then was recruited for the executive management training program at The Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. From there he continued on to work at various properties which included the Hilton International in Washington D.C., the Crowne Plaza in Williamsburg, VA, and the Omni La Mansión del Rio in San Antonio, TX. He retired to Cape Coral, FL in 2012 where he spent many enjoyable hours painting Florida landscapes, experimenting with outdoor photography, and tending to his garden. David's greatest gift was loving his family, friends, and neighbors in unique, surprising, and inspiring ways. A creative prankster, he was the life of any gathering of family and friends. He was the gentlest of souls, and an enemy to none. He exemplified what it is to be a loving Christian. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 12 noon, at the Irvine Memorial Chapel on the campus of The Mercersburg Academy, 300 E. Seminary Street, Mercersburg, PA. COLCOMBE JOHN J. Of Dublin, Ohio, formerly of Bradenton, Florida and originally from Pittsburgh, died February 27, 2017, under the loving care of his wife, Lynne, and the Kobacker Hospice of Ohio. He was the son of Dave and Evaline; brother of Dave, Albert, Thomas, Mary Rieger-Chislaghi, Patricia Bellows, Ann Crean and Elizabeth Colcombe. He is missed by a large extended family.
