FORYS GEORGE V. AGE 92, PASSED...
FORYS GEORGE V. Age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 12, 2017. George immigrated to the United States from Ukraine, son of the late Michael and Josephine Forys of Ambridge, PA. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean (Manastersky); sister, Stephanie (Forys) Komonytsky; brother-in-law, Msgr. Emil Manastersky; and sister-in-law, Pauline (Manastersky) Edwardo (Albert). He is survived by nephew, Donald Komonytsky of Boulder, CO and step- nephews, Henry Edwardo and Bert (Maryann) Edwardo of Pittsburgh. He graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1956 with a Degree in Architecture and was employed by Green Engineers and Michael Baker Engineers. George was a very proud champion for his Ukrainian heritage, perhaps best summarized by these close friends and professional associates: The cultural erudition and encyclopedic knowledge of Ukrainian arts, which George Forys so generously contributed to the design process of the Ukrainian Nationality Classroom at Pitt, was crucial in the Room's successful development and completion. His patient guidance of the preliminary planning and the tireless assistance he gave in providing references for the final architectural design and its verbal description were indispensable. The Room's architecture wouldn't be possible without him. George Forys' love and commitment to his native land as a youthful military volunteer in the tragic Ukrainian Division, his poetry and songwriting while a prisoner of war in Italy, and his lifelong effort to assemble a library of Ukrainian arts, architecture, music, and literature, much of it now bequeathed to the Harvard Library, left us a precious legacy to learn from, to emulate, and to pass on to our descendants. Walter Boykowycz Architect. George was devoted to his Ukrainian heritage and especially Ukrainian music. He used his rich tenor voice to sing in the choirs at SS Peter and Paul Church and the League of Ukrainian Catholic Choir. He sustained Ukrainian music in western Pennsylvania by promoting the training of choir directors and sharing his broad background and vast knowledge of Ukrainian music. Dorothy Waslo, Director, Ukrainian Cultural Trust Choir page1image17136 Friends will be received Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. in the JOHN SYKA FUNERAL HOME INC., 833 Kennedy Drive, Ambridge, www.sykafuneralhome.com from where prayers will be offered Monday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a church service at 10 a.m. in the SS Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ambridge.
