CHMIEL JOSEPH ANTHONY In his 90th year, a longtime resident of Crafton Heights, died Sunday, December 22, 2013. Born June 10, 1923, in Phillips, PA. Husband for 62 years to the late Dorothy (Vroble) Chmiel; beloved father of Bernadine (Jack) Swanzy of Fredericksburg, TX, Charlene (Keith) Pettigrew of Alpharetta, GA, Mary Georgette (late Dave) Kastory of Avalon, Joe Chmiel, Jr. of Pgh., Ann (Joe) Hrabik of N. Fayette, Barbara (Cliff) Smith of Needham, MA, and Dorothy Chmiel of Crafton Heights; dear grandpap of David Paul (Angie) Kastory, Michael John (Geraldine) Swanzy, Beth (Scott) Kelly, Jenny Swanzy, Erica Pettigrew, Stephen Pettigrew, Madeline Hrabik, Allie Hrabik, Emily Smith, Harrison Smith,and the late precious angel, Amanda Kastory; great- grandpa of Luke and Benjamin Kelly; brother of Walter (Dolores) Chmiel and Jean Chmiel; brother-in-law of Mary Katherine Langor; sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Joe was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps., a World War II veteran with the U.S. Army, and served in the 854th Engineers Aviation Battalion. Following his military service, Joe worked as a driver for Capital Transit in Washington, D.C., Greyhound, the Pittsburgh Railways, and Port Authority Transit of Allegheny County, until retiring in 1985. A longtime member of St. Philip Parish and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Joe was awarded the Manifesting the Kingdom Volunteer Award on January 30, 2011. He will be forever remembered by those who loved him. Family and friends received on Thursday 6-8 p.m. and Friday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the SCHEPNER - McDERMOTT FUNERAL HOME, 165 Noble Ave., Crafton. Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Philip Catholic Church. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Philip Church, St. Vincent de Paul Society, 50 W.
