BITLER PATRICIA A. Age 74, of Monroeville, lost her battle with terminal Melanoma on July 21, 2015, surrounded by her family. A loving and devoted wife, mother, "Gabba" (grandmother) and friend. Pat is survived by her husband, Edward J. Bitler; her children, Edward J. Bitler, Jr. (Susan) and Cheryl Murray (Dave, deceased); sisters, Eleanor Berkey and Cynthia Sargent; granddaughters, Taylor and Brooke Murray; and step-grandchildren, Chris, Caitlin and Matt Murray, Jaime, Jordan, and Jake Beretta. She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Agnes (Kozusko) Lesko. A retired art teacher, Pat loved working with individuals to ensure love, health and success were always attained in life. LAMBERTI ROCCO J. “ROCKY” On Sunday, May 10, 2015, of Indiantown, FL, formerly of Swissvale. Rocky was a retired art education teacher at East Allegheny High School and a veteran of the Armed Forces. He is survived by his brother, Joseph Lamberti and his wife, Ida of Indianapolis, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Antonette Lamberti; sister, Kathryn Helsel; brother, Nicholas Lamberti and a sister-in-law, Jean Perrone Lamberti; brother, Tony Lamberti and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Collins Lamberti; nephew, Ralph Lamberti; and nieces, Antoinette Helsel and Kathy Helsel. Rocky is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Lorraine Helsel, Cindy Helsel Ruff, Lisa Lamberti, William Helsel, Anna Marie Lamberti Holmes, Joseph Lamberti, Elizabeth Lamberti, Matthew Lamberti and Nicole Lamberti Despeaux; along with many grandnieces and nephews. HOLTZ ANN MARIE Age 92, of McKeesport, died Friday, July 24, 2015. She was born in McKeesport on Sept. 5, 1922, and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Vera McCusker Wilson and the wife of the late Thomas L. Holtz. She was a successful real estate agent for 23 years and was one of the first female members of the Pittsburgh Real Estate Multi List Organization. She was a lifelong member of the former St. Pius Church in McKeesport. She loved spending time with her family and traveling with her husband. She is survived by her children, Thomas J. (Barbara) Holtz of Penn Twp., Susan (Richard) Blose of Murrysville, Donald P. (Christina) Holtz of Jefferson Hills, Mary Karen (Gerald) Repasky of Myrtle Beach, SC, Kathleen (the late Donald) Kerlin of White Oak, and Patrice (the late Warren) Lee of Cary, NC; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her sister, Agnes Tobias. CUTRUZZULA MARIO JOSEPH, Sr. “CUT” Age 78, of Bloomfield, departed from this world to his ultimate reward on July 23, 2015. Beloved husband of Evelyn (Arcuri); loving father of Felice (Donna), Maria McManus (Brian), Ines Brady (Michael) and Denise Callihan (Dean) and the late Mario (Christy); loving grandfather of Mario, Heather, Anthony, Dominic (Mario), Lewis, Robert (Maria), Haley, Keely (Ines), and the late Jennie; and four great- grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Al Cotti (Dorothy), Felix, Jr. (Elizabeth); sister-in-law, Lois; and the late Francis Gelormini, Catherine Fusco, Mary Sandonato, Frank, Anthony, and Vincent; also survived by many nephews, nieces and cousins. Dad served 20+ years as an assistant coach at Mt. Alvernia and helped them win a PIAA title and six WPIAL titles, inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame in 2013. Dad was a proud Central Catholic graduate '54, a veteran of the United States Navy Korean War (USS Smalley-DD565), and a lifelong member of the Larimer Avenue Rogues. Our loving father leaves us with unconditional love, beautiful memories, encouraging support and the love of rock music and good Italian bread (which he delivered to his kids every Saturday for the past 20 years). WAIN JEANE CRAWFORD THOMAS Age 90, Jeane passed away April 17, 2015, in Encino, CA. Born in New Brighton May 20, 1924, she was New Brighton HS valedictorian in 1942. At Oberlin College, she completed her AB (Phi Beta Kappa) in three years, and then began teaching at New Brighton HS in 1945. She also began working on her MA at Univ. of Pittsburgh. While taking classes in Los Angeles, she met Christopher Wain. They married in New Brighton on June 26, 1948. Jeane was proud of her ancestry, including the Thomases who fought in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and her Scots-Irish ancestors (Crawfords and Campbells) who came to Pittsburgh in the 1840s, and her German heritage (Beitsch, Hartman, Eckstein). A longtime member of Episcopal Church, she sang in choirs, and served as lay reader and as one of the first female Eucharistic ministers. A gifted teacher, Jeane taught English for more than 20 years at Fairleigh Dickinson University in NJ. She brought the great authors alive, and was once named teacher of the year. In 1983, she and Chris retired to California. They traveled extensively and enjoyed their grandchildren. She also added to her father's and brother's genealogical research and proudly became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Society of the Descendants of Washington's Army at Valley Forge. Surviving Jeane are her children, Chris, Jr. (Katrina) of Beaverton, OR; Margot Wain Moss (Robert) of Sherman Oaks, CA; four grandchildren, Stephen (Erin), Gregory, Meghan, and Emily Moss; and a grandniece, Olivia Thomas Sullivan. Predeceasing her were husband, Chris; parents, Joseph Warren Thomas II and Frances Jeane Crawford Thomas; brother, Joseph W. Thomas III; and niece, Deborah Brooks Thomas. HOFFSTOT HENRY PHIPPS, Jr. Henry Phipps Hoffstot, Jr., died peacefully on June 29, 2015, at his home on Fifth Avenue. As was his wish, he died in the same bedroom where his mother had died nearly half a century ago. He was 97. Mr. Hoffstot was born on Dunmoyle Street in Pittsburgh on November 13, 1917, the second son of Henry Phipps Hoffstot and Marguerite Martin. He attended Misses Bradshaws' School on School House Lane and was graduated from Shady Side Academy in 1935, Harvard College in 1939, and Harvard Law School in 1942. He served in the United States Army from 1942-1946 as a Second Lieutenant in the Counter Intelligence Corps and was credited with the arrest of Wernher von Braun. He joined Reed, Smith, Shaw & McClay in 1942, where he was Assistant Managing Partner from 1972 to 1983. He remained at the firm for 73 years, going to the office regularly until the end of 2014. In 1947, he married Barbara Snyder Drew, daughter of Mary Snyder and James Byron Drew, Chief Justice of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. They had two children, a daughter, Thayer Drew, and a son, Henry Phipps Hoffstot III, who is married to the former Daryln Upson Todd Brewer. Mr. Hoffstot had five grandchildren, Ian Hoffstot Unterman, Megan Drew, Dominey Drew, Henry Fife Hoffstot, and Maeve Upson Hoffstot. Mr. Hoffstot served on numerous boards, including Carnegie Institute, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Phipps Conservatory, Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, the American Museum in Britain, the Morewood-Shadyside Civic Association, St. Edmund's Academy, the Visiting Nurse Foundation, Family and Children's Services, The Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina, Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach, and Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation, among many others. He was director of the Pennsgrove Water Supply Company and the Heppenstall and Midvale - Heppenstall Companies. Over the course of five decades, he served as a Deacon, Elder, President of the Board of Trustees, Ruling Elder, and Clerk of the Session of Shadyside Presbyterian Church. He had homes in Pittsburgh, New Waterford, Ohio, Palm Beach, Florida, and County Galway, Ireland. There was a private burial Thursday in New Waterford, Ohio. A memorial service will be on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at 11 a.m. in Shadyside Presbyterian Church. Arrangements by JOHN A. McCOWAN JANE On July 22, 2015, Jane McCowan left her earthly shell and, as she put it, “hit the road, Jack!” Jane was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 10, 1936, to Mary K. (Radcliffe) Shuster and George A. Shuster who we are sure greeted her at the gates of Heaven. She was an art teacher and loved teaching children to develop and use their skills. She loved the Outer Banks, her animals, her friends and quiet times with her family. She married Fuller McCowan, on January 8, 1968, and built a home and life of love with him and with whom she is now reunited. Surviving her are her children, Valerie Blatt of Eighty Four and Fuller Stuart McCowan of Jefferson Hills; her son-in-law, Andy Blatt and her daughter-in-law, Emily, whom she loved deeply. Also surviving are her beloved stepchildren, Charles McCowan (Carol) of Jacksonville, Florida, Scott McCowan of Madison, Wisconsin, Michael McCowan of Portland, Oregon; and many to whom she was a surrogate mother. Also surviving are her granddaughter, Valory McCowan; and grandsons, Aiden and Ashton Blatt; and many step-grandchildren, cousins, and friends in whom and through she bequeaths her legacy of love to the ages.
