He was the author of "And The Wolf Finally Came: The Decline of the American Steel Industry," "We Can't Eat Prestige: The Women Who Tamed Harvard," and "Harry, Tom, and Father Rice: Accusation and Betrayal in America's Cold War." He also wrote "Monongahela Dusk," an historical novel. He had been a labor reporter and editor for Business Week magazine. He was born in McKeesport, PA, and was a graduate of Penn State University. He is survived by his wife, Joanne; two sons, John Peter Hoerr IV and his wife, Jamie Leighton, David M. Q. He was the devoted husband of 26 years to Jo Winger; loving uncle to Suzanne Merulli, Lisa, Mitchell, and Ava-Li Baker, Wendy and Mark Stabile; and stepfather to Shawn (and Janet) Krepps; and beloved brother-in-law to Clarice Venetti. Dr. Winger served in WW II as an Intelligence Officer and after his service, he earned two doctorate degrees. His professional education career began as a Chemistry and Physics Teacher and culminated as long-term Superintendent of two large school districts. At Westminister Presbyterian Church, Dale served as Deacon and Stephen Minister. Golf, reading, and his dogs were among his greatest pleasures. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Dorothy Doyle; sister, Marjorie Barwick; and nephew, George Merulli, Jr. Per Dale's request, there will be no visitation or burial services. MULLANEY CAROLYN LEE (NARDINI) Cherished sister, daughter, aunt, wife and friend, age 72, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2015 in Cape Coral, FL after a brief battle with cancer. Born December 16, 1942 to Lois and John Nardini, Carolyn grew up in Carnegie, PA and subsequently lived in Oakdale, PA with her beloved husband, William R. Mullaney. Widowed in 1995, Carolyn eventually moved to Pine Island, FL, where she relished the year-round warm weather and the novelty of visits from the local egret (whom she named Charlie) and the alligator who frequented the canal behind her house. She retired in April from her position as a receptionist for Lee Memorial Health System, where her strong work ethic, dedication and kindness earned her the love and respect of so many co-workers. Prior to working at Lee, she was a supervisor in the data processing department at Ryan Homes (later NVR) in Pittsburgh for approximately 25 years. A tireless worker, Carolyn most enjoyed taking care of her family members and friends, and also took great pride in keeping her home in pristine condition inside and out. When not at work, she was most likely to be found on a ladder tending to the gutters, in the yard maintaining her beautiful landscaping, or cooking one of her many fantastic signature dishes. Loving sister and best friend of JoAnna Kun; cherished aunt of Heather (Thomas) Earley, Kimberly (Jonathan) Keevil, Jamie Nardini, John (Danielle) Nardini and the late C.J. Knepper; beloved great-aunt of Noelle (Ben) Vann, Dwain Fisher, Addison Lee, Nicholas Kramer and Autumn Nardini; sister-in-law to Beth Nardini and the late Andrew Kun; many loving and special cousins and friends.
