DAVIS ROY DEMPSEY Age 85 years young, of Dallas, Pittsburgh, Jupiter and Cat Cay, Bahamas, passed away on June 16, 2015. Roy Dempsey was the child of Anna Pearl Richmond and Roy Whitaker Davis of Witcherville, Arkansas. He was an early Christmas gift as he was born on December 23, 1929. Roy was a longtime member of the Duquesne Club in Pittsburgh, equity member and Past President of Cat Cay Club in The Bahamas since the mid 1970s, supportive member of North Dallas High School, class of 1947, and involved member of the Hambletonian Society. Roy was an extremely successful horseman in the Standardbred Horse world. He had horses who all had the surname of Spur, won four Little Brown Jugs, two Breeders Crown trophies and every major race in that sport. Roy was named “Horseman of the Year” by the United States Trotting Association in 1988. His victories and owner achievements are numerous and he would be embarrassed to have that long list recorded. While his passion was horse business, his dominance in the wholesale and group travel with Royal Travel provided the platform to maintain the horses in the early days. Roy was always generous with his time, ideas and resources to make sure that Cat Cay kept afloat. He added the equity membership category to the Club during his Presidency. His role with getting Cat Cay to emerge from utter devastation after Hurricane Andrew in 1992 was paramount. Roy was married to Vera for 37 years, but even in divorce remained friendly. Vera was visiting him a month ago. They had three children, Roy D. of Tampa, Vikki living with husband, Don, in Dallas and Richard residing in Las Vegas. Roy's devoted and dearest friend of 25 years, Celia Paleologos of Montauk, Palm Beach, Cat Cay, Bahamas, Highlands, NC and Jupiter, along with her adult children, Coco, Alexandra and Nikki, were an integral part of his life. Roy's “Richmond” cousins, aunts and uncles, high school classmates and friends throughout his life were given equal care and attention. We all miss you in our own way. You made us all feel special. You made us crazy. You made us laugh. You were one of a kind. A Memorial Service for his friends from Mangrove (residents AND employees) was June 23, 2015, at Mangrove Bay in Jupiter, Florida. A Memorial Service is planned to take place in August in Cat Cay, Bahamas. Arrangements are still underway. For any additional information, please contact Vikki at vhwhitson@hotmail.com. Rather than any donations, Roy, “Paco,” “Slick,” “Mr. D.,” “Little Roy” or “Demp” or however you knew him, would rather you toast him in his honor whenever possible. So, here's to you…. LATENSER Dr. BARBARA ALICE HOPE Rest in Peace, Barbara Latenser, MD. There is so much to be said about this extraordinary, gutsy, and brave woman. She was a nurse who then decided to become a top notch trauma and burn surgeon, because WHY NOT??? After medical school, surgical residency and a fellowship in Philadelphia, Barbara began work at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh in 1990. Barbara then went on to become Chair of the Burn and Trauma Dept. at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, then Director of Burns and Trauma at the University of Iowa Medical Center. She also volunteered her time and professional expertise in Bosnia during the war, as well as India, Nepal, and Zambia (and probably some other countries as well), in addition to Operation Safety Net (a wonderful program delivering medical care to the homeless on the streets of Pittsburgh). Barbara had a brilliant mind, many talents (including music, house renovation, needlework), a very generous heart, and a tremendous will to live life at its fullest. She was determined to see as much of the world as possible, and she pretty much did (and with gusto)!!! She had her Bucket List knowing that she would eventually move on from this life to another one. The world is a better place for what she gave to it. She will be very missed. Godspeed, Barbara. A celebration of life memorial will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City on July 18, 2015, 12:00 p.m. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Burn Association at ameriburn.org, or St. Florian Fire and Burn Foundation at stflorainfireandburnfoundation.com or through Allnutt Funeral Service, 650 W. Drake Road, Fort Collins, CO 80526, (970)482-3208. Please visit Barbara's online memorial at: www.allnutt.com Send condolences post-gazette.com/gb
