JORDAN HAZEL M. (BURKHOLDER) Of Turtle Creek, age 95, on Thursday, February 19, 2015. Hazel was born January 10, 1920, in Ligonier Twp. (Darlington), the daughter of the late Earl, Sr. and Margaret (Wedge) Burkholder. On February 24, 2009, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Gilbert James "Gibby" Jordan. Dear mother of Sandra (John) Hearn of Elizabeth Twp., Thomas (Paula) Jordan of Turtle Creek, and Deborah (Donald) Watt of Monroeville; cherished grandmother of Megan Jordan Capalongo, Dustin (Sara) Watt, Darren (Sherri) Watt, and Dana Watt; bonus grandmother of Robert Tyler Long; proud great- grandmother of her “Bubbas”, Mikey Capalongo, Darren R., Mason and Cooper Watt; sister of Margaret Borgo of Penn Twp. Preceded in death by brothers, Earl "Bud", Robert and Charles Burkholder; sister-in-law of Matilda "Anne" Burkholder and Janet Burkholder; also survived by nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends and neighbors. Hazel was a 1937 graduate of Ligonier High School. She was a retired cost clerk for Mine Safety Appliance in Wilkinsburg. She loved to read, do crosswords, go to the beach, and was known for baking her famous chocolate chip cookies. Friends welcome Saturday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the PATRICK T. MATURE PATRICIA FROST Age 83, of Beaver and formerly of Bellevue, PA, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2015, in UPMC Passavant-Cranberry after a short illness. Born June 13, 1931 in Pittsburgh, she was a daughter of the late George B., Sr. and Rosalia A. (Ganther) Frost, and was a resident of Beaver since 1986. A graduate of Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, with a B.S. in Education (cum laude) in 1964 and M.S. in Education in 1966, she was a retired educator after 31 years of teaching at Avonworth Elementary, Emsworth Elementary, and Rochester Institute of Technology. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR), The Thistle and Twig Club, Cornell Lab of Ornithology-Cornell University, and a member of Saints Peter and Paul Church, Beaver. She loved birding and herb gardening, was an avid reader who also enjoyed sail boating with her husband in the Chesapeake Bay. She is survived by her husband, Alvin Mature, with whom she celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary on February 15, 2015, and were grateful for the good wishes extended to them in honor of the love they shared. She is also survived by a brother, George B. Frost, Jr. (Mary Lou) of McMurray; two sisters, Rosemary Holusha (George) of Phoenix, AZ and Beth (Elizabeth) Evans of Harrisburg; ten nieces and nephews, a very special niece, Amy Evans, David, Daniel, Mary Ellen and Timothy Frost, Jennifer Stahl, Terry Hurley, Molly Evans, Scott Evans, and Shannon Kobinsky; seven great-nephews; and four great-nieces; and a special cousin, Jean Stokes, New Jersey. Friends will be received Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. in the NOLL FUNERAL HOME, INC., 333 Third St., Beaver. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Saints Peter & Paul Church, with her pastor, Father Robert J. Miller officiating. Virginia Mary Spadafore earned her wings on February 17, 2015, her soul was welcomed by her husband, Ralph Spadafore, Sr., and their children, Ralph, Jr., Sue Riek, and Paul Peters. Ginny will be missed by her children, Virginia Sanders, Jim and Amy Spadafore, Nancy Peters, Patty and Joe Spadafore. As well as her grandchildren, Kaytee Riek, Jess Peters-Rooney, Janina Peters, Vanessa Peters, Sara Riek, and Nick Spadafore. HOLMES CHARLES C. Charles, 86, of Florida, died Sunday, February 15, 2015, in the Lane Purcell Hospice House, Sumterville, FL. He was born January 30, 1929, in Crafton, a son of the late Charles Holmes, Sr. and Sarah (Mahaney) Holmes. Mr. Holmes was a retired chief dispatcher with US Steel. He loved his family and was an avid hunter and outdoors man. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth (Orel) Holmes, with whom he celebrated his 59th wedding anniversary on February 14, 2015; children, Charles C. (Gayle) Holmes, Jr. of Texas, Deborah (Benjamin) Hernandez of California, Kimberlee (Mike) Fuller of Pennsylvania, Jeffrey A. Holmes of Florida; brother, Donald (Jill) Hillebrand of Pittsburgh; he was also survived by four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Anthony Orel; sisters-in-law, Nancy Rank and Rose Scumaci. WINSLOW THOMAS BRONDER Age 84, peacefully with his family by his side, on Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Born February 14, 1931, a son of the late Thomas and Claretta (Bronder) Winslow; devoted father of Marie-Elaine (Bruce) Fawcett, Stephen (Loreen), Cecile (William) Englert, Jonathan (Adrienne), Valerie (Tom) Jesick, the late Christopher and Matthew; father-in-law of Karen Winslow; also survived by eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, a cousin, John Gillespie and the mother of his children, Mary-Dorothy Winslow; brother of the late David Winslow. Tom had a thirst for learning and many talents. He was a woodworker, photographer, and for many years a printer for the Holy Childhood Association on the North Side. Tom worked as a contractor, restoring and preserving many historic homes in the Pittsburgh area which he loved. His passions included the outdoors, gardening and traveling. He would take his family to many historic sites throughout the country, particularly those involving the Civil War, in a station wagon and tent camper. He had a great imagination and expertise with woodworking which he shared with his sons when he built a convertible crib, clocks, and many gifts for family members. Tom renovated his own home and “The Homestead” next door, where most of his family was born. Tom had a kind and thoughtful heart, always thinking of others, doing whatever he could for family, friends, and strangers. STERNGLASS Dr. ERNEST J. Age 91, formerly of Pittsburgh, on Thursday, February 12, 2015, in Ithaca, NY. Husband of the late Marilyn Seiner Sternglass. He leaves his son, Daniel; and daughter, Susan; and grandchildren, Russell, Andrew, Claire and Aurelius. After escaping Nazi Germany, he attended Cornell University where he received his Ph.D. in Applied Physics. His long career at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine resulted in research and inventions which produced the cameras that sent back the first live pictures and videos from the lunar surface (including the iconic live video of the Apollo 11 astronauts walking on the moon seen around the world), as well as pioneering work on digital x-ray imaging. From the early 1960s, he also began a lifelong effort to research and publicize the detrimental health effect of low-level radiation from nuclear bomb testing and nuclear power on public health.
