STEINER MARIE E. Age 97, died peacefully at 1:20 a.m. on Monday, February 9, 2015, at Locust Grove Assisted Living, West Mifflin, PA. The daughter of Mary and Joseph Steiner, she was born on a small farm in West Mifflin, in a house that burned down when she was only two months old. The family lived in the stable until her father, a finish carpenter, had a new house built where the other had been. Marie lived there the rest of her life until the last month or so. One of 11 children, she was devoted to each of her siblings, Herman, Joseph, Agnes, who only lived two days, Robert, Alma, Nicholas (Raymond), Francis, Agnes, Jesse, and Laura, all of who predeceased her. A graduate of Munhall High School, Marie worked for several years at Wolfarth's Bakery in Homestead, where she distributed wonderful sweets to nieces and nephews who came along. At the beginning of WWII, United States Steel began hiring and she was encouraged to apply there for a job, which she did. She was hired immediately and worked there in the billing office until her retirement. Marie loved to travel and to visit and care for her family and friends. She was happy for picnics and parties, and saw that everyone was well celebrated. In her later years, she and her sister, Laura, spent much of their time caring for their mother, Mary (also long-lived), who died at age 94. Marie was a lifelong and devout member of St. Agnes Church, Bull Run. When she could no longer go to church, the priest stopped by to see her, and the Ladies of Charity would visit her to say prayers. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews, and great-great- nieces and nephews. Loving and compassionate, she will be sorely missed by all who know her. Friends received on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the GEORGE IRVIN GREEN FUNERAL HOME, INC., 3511 Main St., Munhall, 412-461-6394. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Agnes R.C. Church, West Mifflin. KISSE ALEXANDER “SPARKY” Age 97, passed peacefully away on Thursday, February 12, 2015, at Prince George's Hospital, following a short episode of pneumonia. He was born June 18, 1917, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania into a large family. In 1942, he married Rosemary “Smiley” Smialek and in 1957 moved to New Carrollton, Maryland where he started and ran his own successful business. He was the first Santa when New Carrollton was a new community. He rode through the streets in a sleigh made each year especially for him by the Men's Club and distributed candy and gifts to the children and shut-ins. Sparky loved telling tales and relating his experiences with the 28th Division in WWII during the Battle of the Hürtgen Forest and Battle of the Bulge where he was seriously wounded and earned a Purple Heart as well as a Bronze Star. Even during war's difficult times, his sense of humor and courage was an inspiration to all and he earned many commendations. He also qualified as a sharpshooter and could still out-shoot many younger veterans at Army Reunions. He traveled back to Normandy several times with veterans groups for anniversary remembrances.
