STRALEY RICHARD W. Of White Oak, formerly of Wilkins Twp., passed away at his residence Saturday, November 29, 2014. The Straley family has a long history in Wilkins Township. In the early 20th century, Julius and Flora Straley farmed the land that is now the William Penn Cemetery on Greensburg Pike. They became proud parents of four sons, the youngest being Richard, born on June 12, 1920. Richard was the most athletic of the boys, participated in many sports, and became a star basketball player for Turtle Creek High School. After graduation he turned down an opportunity to play professional basketball because at the time the pay was quite low. In 1941, Richard married Evelyn (Galbraith) Straley. Shortly after he enlisted in the US Army and was assigned to the A Battery of the 231st Searchlight Battalion. His tour of duty in WW II included training and operation throughout the US, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He attained the rank of T4. Returning from the war, he became one of the founding members of the VFW Post 6681 in Wilkins Township. During those post-war years, an old friend claimed that Rich Straley had the best looking car and the best looking wife in the Turtle Creek Valley. At the age of 94, Richard passed on leaving a legacy of a son and daughter-in-law, Richard Eric and Jeannette (Turkaly) Straley; grandsons, Richard, Jr. and Melissa (Ensley) Straley, and Jason and Danielle (Fairman) Straley; and five great-grandchildren, Kiersten, Ian, Gavin, Alexander and Asher.
