REGAN JOHN “JACK” WALSH Age 67, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014. He was born on October 8, 1946, in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Thomas and Elizabeth Regan. He was a graduate of South Hills Catholic High School and attended Bloomsburg College and Parsons College before serving his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Jack's career with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company began in 1970. He held a range of sales positions throughout the country, eventually retiring as National Vending Sales Manager in Winston-Salem, NC. Jack is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Liz and Will Outlaw and his son and daughter-in-law, Garth and Carly Regan. He had five beloved grandchildren, Abigail Garwood, Julia and Harrison Outlaw, and Hadley and Emily Regan; he is also survived by his three brothers, Charlie, Tom, and Mike Regan; and the mother of his children, Vicki Collins. Jack was an avid golfer, runner, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with family and friends enjoying life. A celebration of Jack's life will be held in the near future. BROFF MYRON “MIKE” DAVID Age 74, passed away July 14, 2014. Mike was born on May 7, 1940, in Pittsburgh, PA to Rosella and the late Gilbert Broff. He graduated from Alderdice High School in 1957 and from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962. He helped run the family business, Broff's Diamonds and Loan, until his retirement in 2001. Mike loved to travel and was a serious gourmand. Whether it was his weekly business trips to New York City or his annual trips to Belgium and Thailand, where he eventually retired, Mike enjoyed seeing the world and experiencing different cultures. He was also an active member of AA. Mike is survived by his mother, Rosella Broff; his daughter, Kristi Broff Knecht (Steven Knecht); and his grandchildren, Sydney Knecht and Andrew Knecht. He is also survived by his brother, James Broff; his sister, Barbara Broff Goldman; and his former wife, Sandra Broff. A Memorial Service will be announced at a future date. Janet was a maternity nurse by profession, an excellent cook, avid reader, lover of all animals and science fiction movies. She was a passionate fan of all Pittsburgh sports, especially the Steelers. Born in Sanford, ME on July 31, 1939, to the late Annabelle and John Riddle. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Richard Burtch; and daughter, Susan DeRiggi. She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Lynda Burtch-Krivansky and Mark Krivansky of Oxford; and her son-in-law, Michael DeRiggi of Cranberry Twp. SMITH EDMUND CARLYLE On July 15, 2014, Edmund Carlyle Smith of Sewickley, PA, died peacefully at age 93. He is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Gene Sachs Smith; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Gary and Karen Smith of Sewickley, PA; and three grandchildren, Emily (James) Bauersmith of Sewickley, PA, Brian (Aubrey) Smith of Greenwich, CT, and Margaret Smith of New York, NY. He was the proud great-grandfather of four boys, Ryan and William Bauersmith and Cole and Beckett Edmund Smith. He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Avis Smith, Beatrice Smith and Delores Riley. Edmund was born on October 10, 1920, in Grafton, WV, to Elias and Inez (Withers) Smith. At age 16, he enrolled at Fairmont College for one year and finished his education at West Virginia University where he completed a degree in Chemical Engineering, graduating in 1941. He joined Spang-Chalfant in Ambridge, PA, and helped to produce over 3,000 large shell casings daily for the U.S. war effort. After the war, he earned a Masters of Metallurgical Science at Carnegie Tech and became superintendent of the Hot Mill for the Ambridge ARMCO plants. He retired from ARMCO in 1982 after serving as Ambridge plant manager for 10 years. Edmund continued to be active on the boards of Beaver County AAA, Ambridge Chamber of Commerce and ESB Bank post-retirement. He was an exceptionally devoted board member of the ESB Bank for 39 years, performing as Audit Chairman until retirement at age 82. In 1949, Edmund married Evelyn Wagner of Baden, PA, and his only son, Gary, was born in 1950. Edmund was an active member of the Shields Presbyterian Church and the Sewickley Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed golf, bowling and skiing, and was a passionate fan of Steelers football and West Virginia University Football. He was a doting grandfather who rarely missed his grandchildren's athletic events. He enjoyed sporting and friendships made as a member of the Ambridge Country Club, the Edgeworth Club, Sewickley Heights Golf Club and Allegheny Country Club. He also enjoyed attending the Pittsburgh Opera with his wife, Gene, a lifelong supporter. Edmund served the community as a member of the Edgeworth Borough Council for many years. Funeral services for Edmund will be held at the Sewickley Presbyterian Church on Friday, July 18, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sewickley Valley Hospital or to the Sewickley Presbyterian Church. TEFFT ZAKARIA MICHAEL Age 31, of Pittsburgh, died as a result of a traffic accident in Delaware County, Ohio, on Friday, July 11, 2014. He was born on December 25, 1982, in Wakefield, Rhode Island, a son of Michael Scott and Gail Ellen (Cudworth) Tefft. They survive and reside in Franklin, PA. Zakaria traveled to various locations as a manager for maintenance facilities for H&M, which is a Swedish multinational retail clothing company. He loved his family, friends, music, art, and animals. His contagious smile and presence would light up a room. He enjoyed making people laugh and quickly became everyone's friend. Zak was self-taught and passionate about everything. He enjoyed building furniture from recycled materials, and especially loved wood and copper. His greatest talent was the ability to see the potential in something that others considered worthless. His artistic talent led him to starting "It's Never New Furniture" business in the Pittsburgh area. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his fiancée, Meghan Elizabeth McCaffery; a sister, Jessica Gagnon and husband, Lenny, of Summerville; four nieces, Emmalee, Lindsey, Courtney and Ashlee Gagnon; future in-laws, Gerard and Lynne McCaffery of New Jersey; Meghan's grandparents, whom he adored, Doris and Alfred Bauman of Florida; future nieces and nephews, Riley, Victoria and Gavin McCaffery of Colorado. THOMPSON WILLIAM E. Mr. Thompson passed unexpectedly on June 8, 2014. He was a resident of Shaler Township. Bill was a master plumber and honorably served his country in the Marine Corps in WWII. He courageously served in the Solomon Islands, Philippines and Okinawa. He loved animals, was an avid sportsman, loved his dear friends and the “Fossils”. RAPPORT SHIRLEY CUSHING It is with great sadness that the family of Shirley Cushing Rapport announces her passing after a long battle with cancer on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at the age of 83. Formerly of Churchill, Shirley attended the University of Indiana, PA graduated with an Elementary Education degree and was a teacher in the Penn Hills School District for 30 years. Shirley was a member of Rodef Shalom Congregation and Sisterhood, the Blackridge Garden Club and many other organizations. Family and friends were Shirley's passion and delight. Best known for those "signature glasses" Shirley was one of the kindest, classiest, sweetest, most positive people one could ever have the pleasure of meeting. Shirley was born July 1, 1931, in North Braddock, daughter of the late Evan "Frank" Cushing and Christina "Teanie” Cushing Lomicka. She was the wife of her late beloved Sidney; the sister of Ronald (Cathy) Norton and the late Wallace (Cecelia) Cushing. Her many loving nieces and nephews and cousins include Shirlee (Terry) Firestone, Alex (Shelley) Rapport, Ronald J. (Michelle) Norton, Robert Norton, John Fruechtel and William K. (Ruth) Miller. There are many great and great-great- nieces and nephews to be remembered including the two closest to her, Dayus Fruechtel and Leah Norton. Shirley's very special friends include Elaine Marinclin and Marcia Levaur among others. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her last few months.
