ROBERTS WILLIAM DRAKE FORMERLY...

ROBERTS WILLIAM DRAKE Formerly of Sewickley, born very prematurely, on February 5, 1931. Bill was the third and youngest son of Arminta Kapphan and John M. Roberts III. Raised in Mt. Lebanon, he lived on Woodland Road, Shadyside, in his teens and then Sewickley, finally residing at Longwood at Oakmont until June 25, 2014. He attended grade school in Mt. Lebanon and then attended Shady Side Academy. Because he was gentle by nature and small in stature as a boy, he was taught to box to gain confidence and became quite good at the sport. To accommodate his boxing training schedule, he attended the University School in Shadyside. He won numerous boxing championships ending with the Golden Gloves in 1946, 1947 and 1948 and was known as the Gentleman Boxer, eventually growing to six feet tall. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1955 where he was a member of the boxing team and majored in Geology. He joined the family jewelry firm of John M. Roberts and Sons, which was founded in 1832. He loved being part of so many important moments in customers' lives and particularly being involved in pending engagements. He especially enjoyed the detail and craftsmanship of beautiful old estate jewelry and was certified in all aspects of gemology and appraisal work. Until his last days, women would sweep their hand in front of him for him to inspect their rings and remind him of the story behind their receiving it or to whom it had originally belonged, some going back nearly 200 years. He was a member of the Sewickley Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon, the Edgeworth Club in Sewickley, the Pittsburgh Rotary and the American Gemological Society, which family members helped to found. He enjoyed tennis and skiing and continued to train by running then walking throughout his life. His passion was classic cars and sports cars. He was involved in the founding group that created the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. The love of classic cars was something he shared with his dear friend, G. Whitney Snyder. He helped Whitney found the Pittsburgh Transportation Museum, which was located at Station Square until the site was repurposed. Mr. Snyder then gave the majority of his car collection to create the bulk of the collection at The Frick Historical Center's Car and Carriage Museum. From 1997 through 2013, Mr. Roberts worked as docent to support and then honor his friend and the cars they had worked on together. He was predeceased by his parents; and beloved older brothers, John M. Roberts IV and Charles B. Roberts; and cousins and business partners, Joseph L. Roberts and Steele M. Roberts, all of Sewickley. He was devoted to his wife, Caroline P. Moody, of New York City, from their marriage in 1955 until her death in 2008. He is survived by his daughter, Caroline and husband, Tom, and their children, Callie and Tommy Wentling; and by his son, W. Drake Roberts, Jr.; former daughter-in-law, Kimberly Ference and their daughter, Maggie, and her family; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was a kind and gentle man to the end. A Service will be held at Longwood at Oakmont in the Chapel on Friday, July 11, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. A Memorial Celebration will be held at the Sewickley Presbyterian Church on Saturday, July 12, 2014, at 11 a.m., with receiving afterward in the Robinson Room. Donations may be made to The Frick Car and Carriage Museum, the Sewickley Heights History Center or to an organization of your choice. He would always encourage you to wear an extra special piece of jewelry that brings to mind a loved one or a fond memory. Arrangements by JOHN A. FREYVOGEL SONS, INC. MOSER MARGARET W. PEGGY MAR...
MOSER MARGARET W. PEGGY Margaret W. Peggy Moser, (born Wilda Margaret Moser, June 12, 1920), of Avalon, passed away at St. Clair Hospital on June 4, 2014, of natural causes, after a multi-year struggle with a variety of medical problems. The third daughter of William Edgar Moser (1868-1931) and Mary Loretta Brophy (1885-1964), Peggy was baptized Wilda Margaret Moser (named for an aunt in her father's family). She lived the longest of all her siblings, which include Dolores Marion (Moser) Laush (1917-2000), Mary Bracken Moser (1918-1925), Martin William Moser (1923-2002) and Hilda Ellen (Moser) Aland (1927-2010). She is survived by her brother-in- law, David Seville Aland; six nephews, David, Chris, Sean and Tim Aland, Scott and Andrew Moser; and one niece, Diane Moser. Peggy spent her early years in Butler, PA where her father was a comptroller for American Steel Car (Pullman). Her father died in 1931 and the family moved in with Peggy's maternal grandparents in East Liberty, Pittsburgh. In 1938, the family moved to an apartment adjacent to Bellevue High School just blocks away from Assumption Church where Peggy and her family attended school and Sunday services. At the end of WWII, Peggy, her mother and siblings, purchased a home on Elizabeth Ave. in Avalon. Following graduation from Bellevue High School, Peggy went to work at Koppers (now Lehigh-Hanson) as a pool stenographer and eventually became the administrative assistant to the president of the company. She retired in 1985 and worked as a volunteer librarian in Avalon and Bellevue and composing reams of poetry. In her 70 years on Elizabeth Avenue, she spent hours of spare time creating garden displays that inspired her neighbors to do likewise. She loved Avalon for the trees when they moved in the house in 1944. She was disappointed that the borough did not keep the forest-like atmosphere and constantly lobbied her neighbors to plant trees. Peggy will be missed for her intellect, creativity, and her sensitive knack for recognizing the needs of the community and actively encouraging better living for everyone. She will be buried in the Ligonier Valley Cemetery. A Mass intention for Peggy will be offered on Wednesday, July 23, 2014, at the 8:00 a.m. Mass, Church of the Assumption, Bellevue. CHRIST DR. RONALD A. AGE 80, ...

CHRIST DR. RONALD A. Age 80, on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, of Jefferson Hills. Professor, and first Varsity Basketball Coach Upper St. Clair High School. Beloved husband of Marcia E. Christ; father of Leslie (Craig) Stiffler of Bucks County, PA and Joan (Philip) Joson of Upper St. Clair; grandfather of Matthew and Katherine Stiffler and Christopher, Lindsey and Andrew Joson; brother of the late Robert Christ and Shirley Draper. Ron was a 1951 graduate of Baldwin High School and attended Kent State University. He received his B.S. from the University of Pittsburgh in 1955 and his M.A. in 1959, and his Ed. D. from Pennsylvania State University in 1967. His professional career began in Castle Shannon, teaching 5th grade. He then taught 5th and 6th grades in Upper St. Clair School District and was the Principal at Johnston Elementary School in Upper St. Clair at the age of 27. Ron became the supervisor of all elementary schools in USC from 1963-1969. In 1970, Ron became a Professor at California U. of PA, teaching for 31 years, until his retirement in 2001. At Cal U. he taught Research Methods, Tests and Measurements, Various Methods of Teaching in Elementary Schools and supervised student teachers. His total career in education spanned 46 years. In 1957 at the age of 24, Ron became the first boys varsity basketball coach in the Upper St. Clair school's history. At that time, he was the youngest coach in the WPIAL. Prior to 1957, students had the option after finishing junior high school to attend either Mt. Lebanon, Peters Twp. or Bridgeville High Schools. As their attendance grew, it became obvious that USC had to create their own high school, so in 1957, the freshman class was kept as sophomores and continued until they graduated in 1960. His four year record was 54 wins and 30 losses. When he became the principal of Johnston Elementary School, he had to resign from his coaching position since the district had the policy that you had to work in the building where you coached. Ron was an avid golfer, playing at Youghiogheny Country Club, where he was a member from 1986-2011. In 2011 he joined Ligonier Country Club. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church since 1983.
