SHEILA RADCLIFFE ATKINSON FISHER Sheila Radcliffe Atkinson Fisher passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2020, just shy of her 88th birthday on August 17. Her family, friends, caregivers, and her faith in God gave her comfort during a long illness. Now that her struggle is over, we are left with memories of her strength, intelligence and love. Born in Millville, NJ, to Dr. W. Irvin Atkinson and Margaret Radcliffe Atkinson, Sheila and her younger brother, Irvin K. Atkinson, grew up spending summers first at a cottage in nearby Indian Lake and later in Ocean City, NJ. After graduating from Millville High School as valedictorian, she attended Bryn Mawr College where she majored in Political Science and edited the school newspaper. Bryn Mawr embraced her and in return, throughout her life, Sheila advocated for the advancement of women and girls through education. After graduating in 1953, Sheila moved to New York, NY, working her way into an editorial role at the New Yorker. She married Richard “Dick” Fisher in 1958 and they settled in Pittsburgh where she poured her energy into raising four children: Eric, Sarah “Sally”, Alexandra and Richard. After twenty years as a full-time mother, Sheila separated from Dick and reinvented herself, drawing on her volunteer work with Bryn Mawr to win a position as Director of Alumnae and Development for the Ellis School, an independent girl's school in Pittsburgh. Sheila loved Pittsburgh and volunteered time and energy to the Shadyside Presbyterian Church, the Carnegie Mellon Music Library, the Bryn Mawr-Vassar Bookstore, and the FISA Foundation. Sheila was impeccably dressed, very well read, and had opinions on just about everything. While she was always busy and worked tirelessly, she took great pleasure in throwing dinner parties for her beloved Book Club of over 60 years, drinking a glass of red wine after a day of skiing in Taos, NM, and attacking corn on the cob with a tableful of family in Ocean City. She is survived by her four children; brother, Irvin and his wife, Sandy; nephews, Rob and Sam; and her beloved grandchildren, Margaret “Maggie”, Peter and Erin. Her devoted caregivers, particularly Militza and Stephanie, gave her final years comfort and dignity.
