ANNA B. "BARB WESTEHOFF Age 91, a lifelong resident of Haysville/Sewickley, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at Heritage Valley Sewickley. Born in Glenfield, PA on March 9, 1929, she was one of six children to the late Louis and Florence (Hanable) Westehoff. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Mary Jane (the late Harry) Black, Louis (the late Carol) Westehoff, Florence (the late Rocco) Ciocca, Katherine “Katie” E. Westehoff and Jesse (surviving spouse Marcia) Westehoff. Barb is the beloved and cherished aunt of Patty (Gary) Derzipilski, Rose Ann (Tim) Schoedel, Louis Ciocca, Amy (Tom) Lanzarotta and the late Charles Wesley Scott; along with numerous great-nieces and nephews. Barb was a devout member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and member of the Altar Guild. Barb was a payroll supervisor beginning with Bell of PA and retiring from Verizon. Barb loved her family, church, and her neighborhood. She will be greatly missed by all. Visitation Friday 2-4, 6-8 PM at COPELAND'S, Sewickley, 802 Beaver St. Please meet at Sewickley Cemetery for Graveside Service on Saturday (time later). ANNETTE MAE KAZALAS Age 84, of Dormont, after a courageous battle with cancer, peacefully with her loving family by her side on Tuesday, August 25, 2020. She was born in Steubenville, Ohio, the daughter of the late loving parents, Theodore and Mary Kirlan. Devoted and loving wife of the late John G. Kazalas. Beloved mother of George (Jennine), Ted (Lynn), John and Mary Kazalas; cherished YiaYia of John F., Michael, Cullen, Stacey, Stephen, Joey, Johnny, Stephanie, John Rocco and Jack; sister of the late Ted Kirlan. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Angelo Kazalas; and sisters-in-law, Toula and Athena Kazalas and Elaine James. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and Godchildren. Annette was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan. She was proud of her Greek Icarian heritage and a longtime member of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church. Known for her caring and loving personality, infectious laugh, and delicious Greek cooking, YiaYia's greatest joy was spending time with family and watching her grandchildren compete in sports. JOSEPH WILLIAM SNYDER Age 71, died peacefully on August 26, 2020, at Mercy Hospital, in Pittsburgh, surrounded by his loving family. Joe was born in Pittsburgh on February 17th, 1949, and was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph H. Snyder and Mercedes (Graham) Snyder. He was the beloved and devoted husband for 43 years to Diane M. Snyder; the loving father to Colleen (Adrian) Knox and Joseph W. Snyder; the loving “Pup-pup” to Caleb, Jacob, and Noah Knox; the beloved brother to Patti (Ronald A.) Smith and Jim (Donna) Snyder. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He attended Most Holy Name Grade-School on Troy Hill and Robert Morris College located at the time, Downtown. Joe will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and deep love and devotion to his family. CHESTER KRAWCZYNSKI On Monday, August 24, 2020, age 89, originally of Heidelberg, currently of Lighthouse Point, FL. Devoted husband of 65 years to Margaret Krawczynski (DeMarco); loving father of Fran (John) Flynn, Susan (Irv) Goldstein, Gloria (Mike) Riedl and the late Bernadine (Tim) McMahon; proud grandfather of Douglas (Nikki) McMahon, Michael (Monica) McMahon, Brian (Girlfriend, Katheryn) McMahon, Alex (Fiancé Aileen) Goldstein, and his precious Stephanie Goldstein; great-grandfather of Adaline, James, Ethan, Jude, Adia, Ian Chester. Preceded in death by eight siblings. Chester was a hardworking man — witty, smart, a bit quirky and a man of integrity and honesty. He taught his daughters the meaning of strength of character, kindness toward others, a good work ethic, the love of God, Family and Country, thankfulness for whatever they had, and the importance of standing up for what is right. To his family, He was the greatest husband, dad, pap, G-pap and uncle ever; a friend and a helpful neighbor. He loved his family above all and provided a happy and loving atmosphere where you were always either dancing to polkas or eating a home cooked meal and everyone was always welcomed. He retired from Universal Cyclop Steel, and was a Korean War veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Chester was a Heidelberg volunteer fireman and he loved gardening, soccer, photography, FaceTiming his family, and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Chester was a shining example of what a man, a husband and a father should be. Rest in Peace — We know you are in the arms of Jesus and are reunited with your number one daughter, Bernadine. We miss you both so much. THEODORE HAAZ Age 84, of Southport, N.C. passed away the afternoon of August 21, 2020, at his residence in North Carolina. Born in Murrysville, PA on March 18, 1936, Theodore was the son of the late Dave and Mary Tury Haaz. Surviving at home is his loving wife of over thirty two years, the former Judy Babski, whom he married on November 7, 1987. Ted was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired after working many years in the banking and financial industries in Pittsburgh. A love of the ocean, Ted enjoyed saltwater fishing and going to car shows. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Ted cherished the times he spent with his family and will be sadly missed all by his family and friends. In addition to his wife, Theodore is survived by his children, Theodore D. Haaz (Andrea), Heidi Painter (Chris), Sandy Cappell (Doug), Susan Johnson (Rick), Sue Gorecki (Ron), Lori Jansma (Todd) and Pam Bunchek; eighteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; his special grandson, Tommy, who he had a very special relationship with and his dogs, Lucky and Lacey, who will miss him dearly. Ted is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Alice Will and a granddaughter. BLANCHE INEZ KOSTKA RODGERS Blanche Inez Kostka Rodgers passed away into our Lord's care on August 24th 2020. Blanche was a devoted wife, mother, and woman of deep faith and conviction. She was born on July 2nd, 1932, in Wilber, Nebraska to Emil and Alice Kostka. Blanche grew up in Wilber along with her older brother, Bohuslav and older sister, Emily. She was very active in Sokol gymnastics and graduated from Wilber high school in 1950. Blanche then attended Doane College in Crete, Nebraska and graduated in 1954 with a Bachelor's Degree in history. While pursuing a Master's Degree in European History at American University in Washington, DC, Blanche met John Rodgers, Jr. at church. After a whirlwind romance, John and Blanche married in 1959 and while John taught at Virginia Theological Seminary they grew the family with the addition of their four children. In 1976, they relocated to Pittsburgh where Blanche brought her kindness and generosity in support of the establishment of Trinity School for Ministry where she and John have remained active members of the community. Blanche dedicated her life to caring for her family and looking after those in need. She poured her heart into community endeavors such as helping start Martha's Corner, a free clothing exchange, spending many days and nights at a local pro-life crisis pregnancy center supporting women in emergency situations, and sharing the bounty of her prolific vegetable garden to all. Blanche is survived by her beloved husband, John; her sister, Emily Lyskin; and her children, Mark (Leanne), Sarah (Curtis), Martha (Paul), and Paul (Lauren). She is also survived by her eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Alice, and her brother, Bohuslav. Romans 8:38-39: For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by her son, Andrew Phillip Schreck; an infant daughter, Rebecca Schreck; sister, June Grodz Nigro and Sally Grodz. Survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Regis Vilsack; brother, Ronald (Leslie) DeFranc; nieces and nephews, Billy DeFranc, Jeffrey Adam DeFranc, Lindsay Hadlock, Bradley DeFranc, William Vincent DeFranc; Godchildren, Julie Dunn and Lauren Tusky; brother-in-law, Eugene (Sandy) Vilsack; and sisters-in-law, Mary Catherine Smigiel and Susan Marcus. ROBERT W. BURKARDT Age 68, of Penn Hills passed away on August 25, 2020. Beloved son of the late Donna L. Burkardt and Robert F. Burkardt; dear brother of Janet Burkardt, Meg Burkardt and the late Pamela Burkardt and Elizabeth Burkardt; father of Jessica Burkardt; and grandfather of Brandon Thompson, II. Bob enjoyed a 27-year career with the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. He was a life-long coin enthusiast, often called upon to appraise collections. As a boy, Bob enjoyed the Boy Scouts of America and fishing at the Jersey shore with his father. Bob will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his parents and his kind, gentle soul. JOSEPH J. MEINERT "THE ALASKAN" On Wednesday, August 26, 2020, Joseph J. “The Alaskan” age 81, of Wilkinsburg, passed away. Son of the late Cyril and Amelia (Wilhelm) Meinert and Charles Pinkerton. Beloved husband of 20 years to Phyllis Meinert; loving father of Jacob (Kelly) Meinert, Gerri (Don) Pollock, John (Amy) Meinert, and the late Jim and J.J. JOANNE C. SLOWIK Joanne C. Slowik, of COVID-19 pneumonia complications on Thursday, August 13, 2020, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, SC, a few days before her 87th birthday. Joanne is survived by her husband, John Earl Slowik; her daughter, Kimberly Hammond who resides in Greenville SC and son, Kenny. Her daughter, Karin, passed away in 2015. Joanne was born in Pittsburgh (Bloomfield) in 1933, raised two special needs children with warmth and tenderness, and was a shining light for all that knew her. She was full of kindness, wit and humor and was a strong-minded woman who set out to everyday to build up her family and everyone with whom she came into contact. Joanne loved spending time with her daughter and two granddaughters and found joy in watching them grow, she was with them every footstep for all their early years. Decorating was her passion that she passed to her whole family. Close friends and family will be received at the JOHN F. ELLEN E. PAIANO Of Greensburg, formerly of East Liberty, on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, age 88. Beloved wife of the late Joseph Paiano, Sr.; mother of Ellen M. Schlinkmann (Richard), Carol J. Smolka, and the late Joseph Paiano, Jr.; grandmother of Jacob Paiano, Joseph Bonifate, Sr. (Mindy), Eric Bonifate (Christine), Brandon Smolka, Michael Smolka (Elizabeth), and Michele Smolka; great-grandmother of Carmen Bonifate (Sarah), Anthony Bonifate, Joseph Bonifate, Jr., Jordan Zottola, Shannon Held, and Benjamin Smolka; great-great-grandmother of Colton Bonifate; sister of Dorothy Pavloff (the late John), Kathryn Madzy (the late Allen), Charles Eicholtz (Cindy) and the late Arthur Eicholtz (Anna Mae) and Shirley Livezey (survived by Howard); also survived by sister-in-law, Angeline Porter and many nieces and nephews. Ellen was a very loving, classy lady who charmed all she met. She was a longtime secretary at Sacred Heart Elementary to the late Sr. Irene Mary Wilburn, SC, a dear friend. Friends received at MCCABE BROS., INC. Funeral Home, 6214 Walnut Street, Shadyside on Sunday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., where Funeral will commence on Monday at 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Heart Church at 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be left at www.mccabebrothers.com.
