GAINES SISTER THOMAS JOSEPH, SC Age 73, died at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg, on May 12, 2014. Born in Pittsburgh, Sister Thomas Joseph entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill on December 28, 1959, from St. Irenaeus Parish in Oakmont, PA. Preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Juliette (Massey) Gaines; and a brother, Thomas Gaines; she is survived by a sister, Mrs. Joanne Abshier; nieces, grandnieces and nephews. She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Seton Hill University and a master's degree in theology, pastoral ministry from Duquesne University, and was a certified NACC chaplain. Sister Thomas Joseph taught middle-school students in the dioceses of Altoona-Johnstown, Greensburg, Pittsburgh, and the Archdiocese of Washington. From 1972-1981, she served as the pastoral minister at St. James Parish in Wilkinsburg. During that period, she became a skilled emergency medical technician (EMT), and received the Harold B. Gardner Citizen's Award for her ambulance work. In 1981, Sister Thomas Joseph, known to many as Sister TJ, was named “Citizen of the Year” by Wilkinsburg Mayor John Wilkins for her social and spiritual leadership. She served from 1981-2013 at John J. Kane Hospital, eventually being named chaplain at the Kane Regional Center, McKeesport. In that position, she was twice named “Employee of the Year”. She also received the Thomas W. Jackson Innovation in Chaplaincy Award which recognizes outstanding leaders who have demonstrated excellence, creativity and effectiveness in meeting religious and spiritual needs. Sister Thomas Joseph provided mass care, distributing food in Florida after Hurricane Charley of 2004. A year later, she traveled to New Orleans with the Spiritual Response Team of the American Red Cross to assist those suffering in the wake of hurricane Katrina. Her last disaster response mission was in 2011, when she spent three weeks ministering to tornado victims in Mississippi. Of her life as a Sister of Charity, Sister Thomas Joseph once said, “I always wanted to be a sister. She married her soul mate, Joseph Francis Constable, on February 11, 1960, and became a devoted military wife, nurse, and mother. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Constable; parents, Janette Harkins Mraz, and John Mraz. She is survived by her children, Julie Ann Constable, Jennice Marie Johnston, and Joseph Mark Constable; grandchildren, Cody Ryan Johnston, Kailey Jean Johnston; siblings, John Mraz, James Mraz, Judy Avampato, Joyce Mraz; devoted caregivers; and her dog, Charlie. Neil bravely served in the US Army during WWII and retired from the City of Pittsburgh Police Force after 27 years of service. WALSH SISTER MAUREEN, CSJ Age 94, died Sunday, May 11, 2014, in Villa St. Joseph, in her 75th year as a Sister of St. Joseph of Baden. The daughter of the late John Joseph and Margaret Ryan Walsh, Sister Maureen entered the Congregation in 1939 from Holy Rosary Parish in Pittsburgh. Sister Maureen ministered as a high school teacher in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh and Altoona- Johnstown, including seven years at St. Joseph High School, Natrona, and four years at St. Canice High School, Pittsburgh. After receiving her Ph.D. in 1964 , Sister Maureen began her ministry as Associate Professor at Carlow University. Following a 30-year tenure as Associate Professor of English, Sister Maureen was named Professor Emeritus. Upon her retirement, the college's Humanities Division established the “Sister Maureen Walsh Award for Best Academic Essay.” She also served the Congregation as Director of Temporary Professed Sisters from 1963-67. Her love of teaching and joy in sharing her knowledge with her students was reflected in her smile and her pleasant manner. Sister also took delight in singing, particularly songs of her Irish heritage. She retired to the Motherhouse in 2007 and became a resident of Villa St. Joseph in 2013. Sister Maureen is survived by one brother , David of Fayetteville, PA; nieces and nephews, grand- nieces and grand-nephews; and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden. Friends will be received Tuesday, May 13, 2014, from 1:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, May 14, 2014, from 11:00 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph. KUMER JAMES D. “JIM”, Jr. Born October 26, 1957, and passed away on May 11, 2014. He was born in Sewickley, PA to the late James D., Sr. and Isabel Perry Kumer. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sherry Kite Kumer. Jim was a devoted father to Jennifer A. Kumer of Leetsdale, Maralee I. ( fiancé Matthew Trapizona) Kumer of Sewickley, and Dylan J. Kumer of Fair Oaks; a "great" brother to Debbie and Tom; Jim is the nephew of Edward "Pucky" Perry; he was well loved by his niece, Heather (Ben); and his nephew, Josh (Chelsea); and great-niece and nephew, Hutch and Collins. His dog Mozzie was his faithful companion. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a Mason, a member of Steelworkers #3 and had recently retired from The Army Corps of Engineers. He was a good guy and a wonderful friend to his friends and co-workers. Jim had a great love of the outdoors, particularly the ocean, fishing, and scuba diving and touring the countryside on his motorcycle. NESBITT GERTRUDE HELEN Age 85, of Neville Island, passed away May 10, 2014, at Good Samaritan Hospice in Wexford. Gertrude was born in Syracuse, NY on July 29, 1928, to the late Patricia Zaronski and Walter Hill. She was a Secretary with the Kaufmann's Department Store and retired in 1998 with 35 years of service. She enjoyed reading and liked to embroider. Surviving are two sons, Ronald Nesbitt of Neville Island and Walter Nesbitt of Penn, PA; also two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Gertrude was also predeceased by an infant daughter, Patricia Nesbitt. As per her wishes, there will be no visitation, and a Memorial is planned at a later date. SLOCUM JAMES EDWARD Of Upper St. Clair, on his birthday, Tuesday, May 13, 2014. Beloved husband of 45 years to Lois Slocum; brother of Bob of Peoria, Illinois; father of Christy (Jim) Heflin of Dazey, North Dakota and Matt (Teresa) Slocum of Mt. Lebanon, PA; proud grandfather of Daniel, Anna, Spencer, and Bryce; son of the late Robert and Irma Slocum. James was born in Gary, Indiana, in 1942. He graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1960 and went on to earn a degree in mathematics from Muskingum College in 1965. He worked as a systems analyst for U.S. Steel for over 30 years. Jim enjoyed fishing, photography, vacationing, playing bridge, spending time with friends, family, and grandchildren, and helping others. Additionally, for several years, he assisted with a variety of activities at Christ United Methodist Church, including health ministries, mission trips, fish fries, and more. His sense of humor and kindness is something everyone has appreciated over the years. He was loved by many and will be missed by all. A Memorial Service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 44 Highland Road, Bethel Park, PA 15102 on Saturday, May 17, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. The family will greet friends and loved ones at a luncheon in the Christian Life Center following the service.
