RIDEOUT STANLEY KENDALL Passed away in his Sewickley home on January 22, 2019 at the age of 93. Stan, or “Toe,” as he was affectionately called by his family, was born to the late George Arthur Rideout and Sarah Olive West Rideout on May 25, 1925 in Marianna, PA. He was one of 13 children. Raised in the neighborhood of Beltzhoover in the South Hills area of Pittsburgh, Stan, his loving wife, Vike, and children moved to the idyllic town of Sewickley, Pennsylvania in 1973, where he lived until his passing. In 1943, after finishing South Hills High School, Stan was drafted into the U.S. Navy, where he served as a radio man in Seattle and Pearl Harbor until his discharge in 1946. He was unwavering in his determination to attend college and entered Duquesne University in 1950, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism in 1954. While at Duquesne, Stan started his life of community service at the Soho Community Center and Pittsburgh's Recreational Center. After graduating in 1954, he held various jobs, including a stint at the Morganza Reformatory. In 1957, Stan married the love of his life, Vina Lee Crable. Stan was introduced to his beloved town of Sewickley in 1958 when he was hired as the boys' worker at the Sewickley Community Center. In 1961, he began working as a probation of?cer at the Juvenile Court of Allegheny County. He would also became the Center's executive director. During his tenure at the Center, he conceived of and established the annual "Come On Home Weekend" which was undoubtedly the most anticipated weekend of the year for Sewickley's African American community. For 43 years, Sewickleyans would travel from all over the country and sometimes the world to reconnect with their family and loved ones. In 1971, Stan was offered the job that would certainly de?ne and distinguish his life in Pittsburgh. He was named Chief of Security for Pittsburgh Public Schools. Throughout the next 25 years, he put his unparalleled stamp on the city and was able to keep the schools safe while creating employment opportunities for a diverse and loyal group of guards and staff. Stan often travelled as a consultant throughout the country and was recognized and honored as one the nation's leading authorities on school security. Stan loved and excelled in sports. He played baseball in college and sandlot football most of his life, but his favorite activity was playing tennis on weekends with his family. In his later years, he would enjoy spending countless hours on the front porch of his home listening to music and having conversations with all who would pass by. Stan sadly and suddenly lost his loving wife, Vike, on March 5, 2014, due to a tragic illness, but continued to enjoy the love of his children friends and family until his death. He leaves behind his four children, Suzanne, Rex (Joi), James (Debra), and Lee; as well as three granchildren, Kendall, Matthew, and Zachary; brother-in-law, James Crable (Elaine); “adopted” children, Norma West Green, Darlene Harris Barnes (Rodney), and Craig Bethel; as well as countless nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom he loved dearly.
