She is survived by her loving husband, Marvin, a long time Pittsburgh resident; her son, Max; her daughter, Mary Dee; three grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; nieces and nephews; her sister, Dorothy Ross of Oklahoma City; and sister, Better Miller of Farmington, AR. BEDNAR Sr. ROSARIA, CDP Age 98, of McCandless Township, died peacefully at Providence Heights on March 10, 2014. Sr. Rosaria (Mary Eleanor Catherine) was born May 13, 1915, in McKees Rocks, PA. She entered the Sisters of Divine Providence on September 5, 1932. Throughout the next 75 years, she faithfully and joyfully served God and others in the Diocese of Pittsburgh and for over 53 years, eight at the elementary level and 45 years teaching secondary math, science, Spanish, and religion. She taught at St. Basil's in Carrick, St. Mary's in McKees Rocks, and St. Thomas High School in Braddock. Sr. Rosaria taught at Duquesne University and Washington University in Washington, D.C. and was adjunct professor in the math department at La Roche College. She also taught in the mission in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Sr. Rosaria received a Bachelor's and Master's in Education from Duquesne University. She received a Certificate in physics from Case-Western University and the University of Pittsburgh, and a Math Project Certificate from the University of Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Bednar; seven brothers; and four sisters. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Blanche Bednar; and many nieces and nephews and countless friends. Friends will be received at Providence Heights on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation Thursday, March 13, 2014, from 12-3:30 p.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Divine Providence Chapel at 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Divine Providence Retirement Fund, 9000 Babcock Blvd., Allison Park, PA 15101 or at www.divineprovidenceweb.org. PEROK MICHAEL A. Age 95, of Findlay Twp., Imperial, PA, on Sunday evening, March 9, 2014. Beloved husband of 63 years to Rose Marie (Zajac) Perok; beloved father of Mary Ann Perok, Michelle “Shelly” Perok, and the late Victoria “Vicky” Perok, who passed on September 2, 1969; brother of the late Pauline Marflak, Elias Perock, Mary Perock, Joseph Perock, Anthony Perock, and Helen Kukla; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Mike was a member of St. Columbkille R.C. Church, band leader of the former “Michael Perok and the Cavaliers” and with the “Happy Slovenians.” He played the accordion on radio station WRYO Rochester, PA, and WBVP Beaver Falls, PA, and numerous Pittsburgh radio stations. He retired from J & L Steel, Aliquippa, after 30 years of service. He served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII, where he spearheaded for General Patton. KNABLE F.E. "BUD" 80, of Bethel Park, after a life well lived, went home to be with our Lord, Sunday, March 9, 2014. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley J. (Vernon) Knable. He was the loving father of Diane (Ray) Haid of Bethel Park, Doug (Marty) Knable of Franklin Park, and Sharon (Rich) Pletz of Peters Township. Bud is also survived by his 11 wonderful grandchildren, Breanna (Joe) Richards, Shana (Hawkins) Dykes, Kayla Haid, Kelly, Christine and Kathryn Knable, Samuel, Jacob, Daniel, Grace, and Luke Pletz; he was the brother of Barbara (Dale) Hooper of Basking Ridge, NJ. Before his 28 year retirement full of family, sailing, golf, travel, and Florida sun, Bud culminated his 32 years of service to Gulf Oil as manager of tax and compliance. Mr. Knable was the last remaining employee for Gulf Oil in the Pittsburgh tower as he completed the final Gulf Oil tax returns and filings in the mid 1980s. A celebration of his life will occur at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2014, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Rd., Upper St. Clair. Carlin, Ph.D.; sister of Patricia Janes, the late Kelly Janes, and the late Robert Janes; mother of Barbara Carlin, Jim (Laura) Carlin, Mark (Bonnie Carroll) Carlin, Richard (Jeannie) Carlin, and John (Kim) Carlin; and proud grandmother of eight. Betty graduated from Trinity College with a B.S. in Chemistry and was one of the first women admitted to Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. While raising five children, Betty earned her Master's in library sciences from the University of Pittsburgh and then ran the Oakmont Carnegie Library for two decades, where her love of reading was shared with generations of Oakmont residents. STIVALA MARY C. 83, of Scranton, went peacefully on Friday afternoon, March 7, 2014. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, John L. Stivala, Jr. Born July 1, 1930, in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Florentino and Mary Garcia Alvarez. Mary worked as a retail bookkeeper for several years until she established her own business, Tri-State Uniforms and Awards which she owned and operated for over 40 years. She was a very talented woman and was a quite capable seamstress and designer. She was fond of crocheting and cross-stitch crafts as well. Above all, Mary loved her family, especially her grandchildren and her many shopping excursions she shared with them. Christmas was a very special time for Mary; she loved angels and Santa Claus. She will be remembered for making “Santa-bags” for each of her grandchildren and continued the tradition into their adulthood. Mary was a remarkable woman and will be missed by many people who loved her. The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the Scranton Manor for providing wonderful and loving care to Mary during these past years. The family would also like to thank the staff at the VNA Hospice at Geisenger Community Medical Center for providing comfort in Mary's last hours. She is also survived by four children, John L. Stivala III and his wife, Beth of Pittsburgh, PA, Sheila M. Layo, Martin F. Stivala and his wife, Marianne, and Mark D. Stivala and his companion, Alisha, all of Scranton; eight grandchildren, John Stivala IV, Tracey Stivala, William J. Layo, Raymond N. Layo and wife, Adrienne, Lisa M. Beebe and husband, Meade, Daniel A. Layo, M.J. Stivala, and Pia Mary Stivala; two great-grandchildren, Colin and Kendall Layo; two sisters, Sylvia Galilei and her husband, Fred, and Theresa Spahr and her husband, Larry. ACKERMAN HELEN RUOTI Age 93, of Hollywood, FL, formerly of Allison Park, PA, passed away March 9, 2014. The most beloved mother to son, Lawrence Ackerman and loving mother-in-law to Danial Riehle. She was the youngest child of Salvatore and Rose Ruoti and loving sister of Edith Golinski; nieces, RoseAnn Hill, Carol Ruoti and Nancy Spigliano; nephews, Ray D'Alessio, Melvin Crigler, David Golinski, and Paul Ruoti. Helen graduated from South Hills High School in 1937 and Burroughs Business School. She was a bookkeeper for Sears Roebuck and retired in 1985 from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.
