GIGLIOTTI THOMAS MICHAEL May 11, 1956 to November 18, 2017, of Brookline, formerly of Scott Township, after a brief but courageous battle with ALS which he fought to the end, Tom passed away with his family by his side. Tom was loved and adored by his family and friends. Tom was always willing to help everyone. Very handsome and quick witted, as well as brilliant. Graduate of Chartiers Valley Class of 1974 and a team member of the 1972 WPIAL Champion football team. Tom went on to play football at Grove City College and then attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated in 1979 with a Mining Engineering degree. Several years later Tom earned a Master's of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. Tom was the Director of Engineering at PWSA for several years and most recently a Plant Manager of Tri County Water and Sewer Authority until his illness caused him to retire in June. Tom was an avid sports fan, he loved the Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates. Preceded in death by his father, Joseph L. Gigliotti. Survived by his mother, Dolores B. (O'Hanlon) Gigliotti; brother of Joseph J. (Marilyn) Gigliotti, Margaret Finnel, Christopher (Debbie) Gigliotti, Richard (Cindy) Gigliotti, Stephen Gigliotti, and Caroline Curran (Fred Pollock). Tom had fifteen nieces and nephews; and 28 great-nieces and great-nephews. Tom will be dearly missed by his great, big, close-knit family. CASSIDY SISTER LAVERNE, SC Sister Laverne Cassidy, SC, age 87, died at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg, on November 19, 2017. A native of East Pittsburgh, Sister Laverne entered the congregation on September 8, 1954, from St. William Parish, East Pittsburgh. Preceded in death by her parents, John P. and Mary Ellen (Connor) Cassidy; two brothers, William J. and John B.; and a sister, Bernice Cassidy; she is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. She earned a bachelor's degree in business education and a master's degree in guidance from Duquesne University. Sister Laverne began her teaching career with elementary students in the dioceses of Greensburg, Phoenix and Pittsburgh. She then taught students on the secondary level in schools of the Greensburg, Pittsburgh and Tucson dioceses. In 1981, Sister Laverne was elected to the general administrative council for the Sisters of Charity, a position she held until 1989, when she was named the treasurer of the congregation. She served as treasurer until 1993, and then ministered as co-manager of Beechview Manor, an apartment complex for senior citizens. In 1999, Sister Laverne was assigned as a pastoral minister for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Scottsdale, AZ. In 2001, she returned to Greensburg and volunteered her services in the human resource department and the gift shop at Caritas Christi. Approachable, generous, and fun-loving, Sister Laverne reflected, "In all my ministries, I experienced God's loving and merciful care. I hope that, in some small way, I have made his presence a reality in the lives of those to whom I ministered. May the Charity of Christ continue to urge us!" Joan received the Ambassador's Award while working as an administrative assistant for the Children's Research Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA in the Free Care Fund. In 2004 while employed by the Cape Girardeau Police Department, she was the first civilian to receive the Employee of the Year Award. She recognized the whole Cape Girardeau Police Department as her extended family. She inspired everyone she met. Survivors include the father of her children, Ronald Daum; son, Keith (Jeanetta) Daum, Cape Girardeau, MO; brother, Robert (Lou) Walker, San Antonio, TX; sister, Marilyn Holstead, Pittsburgh, PA; four grandchildren who adored her, Candice Istenes, Madison Daum, Bryar Daum, Walker Daum; nieces and nephews who also adored her. Born in Crafton on July 13, 1924, to the late Ada (Speaker) and John Ledger. Wife of the late Daniel Prelosky; mother of David and Jayne (Scherf) Prelosky, Nancy and Michael Loia, Steven and the late Jill (Gibbs) Prelosky, Phil and Patty (Welsh) Prelosky; grandmother of Nick, Allison, Rachael (Chiappini), Kurt and Kimberly Prelosky, and the late Michael Loia III; great-grandmother of Luca Chiappini. A graduate of Pitcairn High School, she was the 1942 Senior Class president. As a child, she was an active member of the Girl Scouts, and as a young adult she was a counselor at Jumonville. For more than 60 years, she was a member of Monroeville United Methodist Church, singing in the choir for more then 50 years, and a member of the United Methodist Women's circles. She loved doing daily crossword puzzles, in ink. She enjoyed her Tuesday night card games with the ladies of East Boros, and was also known to regularly beat all of her children and grandchildren in Scrabble.
