SKIRPAN JEFF On September 10, 2017, Jeff, age 54, of Scott Twp., was welcomed into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and to be with his brother, Scott. He is survived by his mother, Jean Skirpan, who will love and miss him forever; late father, John Skirpan; brothers, Mark (Karen) and Keith (Becky) Skirpan; sisters, Sharon and Sandy Skirpan; and Jeff's late brother, Scott Skirpan. Also survived by many nephews and a niece. Jeff had two special nephews, Nathan and Eathen Kiszer. He loved them very much and considered them his sons and they told him every day that they loved him. Jeff loved his and Nathan's friend, Ashley Andrus. Jeff will be missed by his best and dear friend, Bill Dell. Jeff loved him like a brother. Jeff was a kindhearted soul. He liked to help everyone without them asking. He loved to clean. His mom says that he is now the housekeeper of Heaven. He loved to cut the grass, eat ice cream, to cook, to water the flowers, to visit the ships at the Carnegie Science Center, and to wear his USA and Steelers T-shirts. He was proud of his praying hands and Russian star tatoos. He would watch the "Spagnoli's" mini-series every Saturday night. Jeff would fly the American flag every day. Jeff cherished his Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail motorcycle more than anything in the world. Jeff's greatest gift and legacy was as an organ donor, he was able to give the gift of life, even in his death. Jeff fought the good fight. A special thank you to the Scott Twp. first responders and to the St. Clair Hospital ICU nurses. Love one another... you don't know what you have until they are gone. We will think of Jeff every time we hear a motorcycle. He is with the angels now. Roll on my brother on your Harley into the heavenly skies, you are now with your brother, Scott, and you can ride together. Private viewing for family only. BARNES JOANNE THERESA Joanne Theresa Barnes, aged 81, passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Joanne was born October 1, 1935, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Francis Michael Gilboy and Helen Marie Vukelich. On September 3, 1955, Joanne married the love of her life, the late Harvey Lea Barnes, Jr. in Detroit, Michigan and, in 1960, relocated to Bellevue, PA, a lovely suburb of Pittsburgh, PA where Joanne's legacy began. Joanne was a loving mother to her 12 high-spirited children as well as many surrogate children along the way. Despite having 14 mouths to feed, there was always room for one or two more at 38 South Bryant. Joanne's greatest joy in life was spending time with her family and her favorite place to go with them was Nags Head, NC. In addition to being incredibly gifted in the arts of sewing and cooking, Joanne had a beautiful voice that could be heard in the pew at First Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, PA for over 20 years. Holidays were magical because of Joanne. Her attention to detail in gift-giving and meal preparation seemed impossible to achieve with a family so large, yet she did so with grace and poise. Joanne was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harvey Lea Barnes, Jr.; granddaughters, Blair Denise Taylor and Lauren May Reinstein; daughter-in-law, Sandra Grace Barnes; and her brother, Arthur Frederick Lampe. Joanne is survived by her children: Clinton Lee Barnes and wife, Nancy, Michele Barnes Taylor and husband, Billy, Duane Harvey Barnes and wife, Terry, Scott Frederick Barnes and wife, Kristen, Jonathan David Barnes, Lisa Annette Yancey and husband, David, Leah Jeanette Brittain and husband, Joe, Christopher John Barnes and wife, Tara, Jennifer Barnes Ryan and husband, Tom, Peter Donald Barnes and wife, Emily, Sean Michael Barnes and wife, Lori, and Harvey Lea Barnes III; in addition to 45 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 1p.m. in the HOOVER FUNERAL HOME, 88 Lucy Avenue, Hershey, with the Rev. John A. Green, officiating. The family will begin receiving guests at Noon. Interment will follow in the Hershey Cemetery. RYAN SISTER MARY JANET Age 99, died at Caritas Christi, the motherhouse of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in Greensburg, on September 15, 2017. A Pittsburgh native, Sister Mary Janet entered the congregation of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill on September 8, 1935, from Sacred Heart Parish, Shadyside. Preceded in death by her parents, Malachy A. (Alex) and Josephine (Dalton) Ryan; three brothers, Edward, Regis, John A.; six sisters, Catherine Curry, Ann Byrd, Josephine Malley, Minnie Osterle, Mary Potts, and Dorothy O'Connor. She is survived by nieces and nephews. She earned a Bachelor's degree in secondary education from Duquesne University and a Master's degree in geography and history from the University of Pittsburgh. Sister Mary Janet taught students of the elementary and secondary levels in schools of the Altoona-Johnstown and Pittsburgh dioceses. In 1965, she began a long tenure as an assistant, then Associate Professor at Seton Hill University until her retirement in 1990. From 1990 until 2004, Sister Mary Janet volunteered her services to the Westmoreland County court advocacy program in Greensburg. She then continued to volunteer in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program at Westmoreland County Community College. Sister Mary Janet received an honorary Seton Hill University Bachelor's degree and gained alumna status in 2005. In that same year, she was awarded the John J. McGrady award in recognition of her exemplary career and for her dedication to helping people in the “most despairing moments of their lives.” In 2006, Sister Mary Janet was recognized by the Westmoreland County Mental Health Association and received the Fred Funari Award of Distinction “for her ministry to those who needed help at the most difficult times in their lives.” In 2010, Sister Mary Janet was honored as a distinguished alumna of Sacred Heart Elementary School. A distinguished teacher, blessed with a keen sense of humor and a flair for entertaining others, Sister Mary Janet spoke of her life as a Sister of Charity, “For most of my years in religious life, I have said this daily prayer from Psalms, 'God created my inmost self; His right hand holds me. For the wonder of your works, I thank you. Guide me in the way that is everlasting.'” Visitation will be held Monday, September 18, 2017, from 2-7 p.m. with a Vigil to follow at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, September 19, 2017, from 1-4 p.m. with the Funeral Mass to follow at 4 p.m. at the Caritas Christi Motherhouse, Mt. BARLAS MICHAEL R. Born in Homestead, raised in Rankin, Mike passed away on Thursday, September 14, 2017, at Lititz, PA, where he resided. He is survived by his wife, Joan A. (Aul) Barlas, of Lititz, to whom he was married for 46 loving years; two daughters, Margaret E. Barlas, MS, of St. Petersburg, FL, Frances M. Barlas, Ph.D., of Manassas, VA; a son, Michael E. Barlas, MBA, his wife, Emily (Savard) Barlas, MA, their son, Michael Blake Barlas, of Wilmington, NC; a sister, Margaret A. (Barlas) married to James Kocis, of Pittsburgh; along with many nieces and nephews. McBRIDE APRIL LYNN Age 65, of Fairfax Station, Virginia, and formerly of Pittsburgh, died Monday, August 21, 2017, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Pittsburgh, April 4, 1952, a daughter of the late John Patrick and Marcia F. (Davis) McBride. April graduated from North Allegheny High School in 1971. She was a valuable member of the swim team for the Royal Ridge Field Club in Pittsburgh and also participated in equestrian events, especially stadium jumping with her father's horses throughout the area. She began her employment career in 1971 with Mohawk Airlines, which later became, Allegheny Airlines, US Air, British Airways, US Airways, and most recently American Airlines. April was a flight attendant for 45 years with these companies traveling countless miles around the globe. April's desire to continue working stopped short due to her recent illness. She was a member of the Congressional Club in Washington DC where she was an avid golfer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia (McBride) Hayden Randazzo; and her paternal grandparents, Pat and Mary McBride. She will be greatly missed by her family, which includes her nephews, John (Wendi) Hayden, Billy (Pat) Hayden, Gary (Cassie) Hayden, Randy Hayden, Robby Hayden; her niece, Cindy (Pete) Mannarelli; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. CRESSWELL MICHAEL W. Michael W. Cresswell, of Frederick, MD, passed away in his home on September 10, 2017. He was 80 years old. Mike is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kate; a son, Phillip Cresswell, his wife, Carrie and their son, Parker; two daughters: Angela Bomysoad, her husband, Mike, and their children, Collin and Wyatt; Jennifer Kline, her husband, Rob and their children, Mason, and Allyssa. He is also survived by his two sisters, Mary Landry and Betty Lee, and their families in England. Mike was born April 26, 1937, in Gloucester, England, to Herbert Cresswell and Thora Cresswell. In 1955 Mike earned a BSc degree from Queen Mary College, University of London. He came to the United States in 1958 and in 1961 obtained a Master's degree in Physics from Penn State. He then worked for a short time for the Shell Oil Company in Canada. In 1965, after receiving a Ph.D. in Physics from Penn State, he and his wife moved to Pittsburgh where he joined Westinghouse's Research and Development Center. Mike became a U.S. citizen in 1973 and in 1975, he earned his MBA at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1989, he took a position at the National Institute of Standards and Technology Labs (NIST), in Gaithersburg, MD. While at both Westinghouse and NIST, Mike received many patents for his contributions to science. While at NIST, he received the Bronze Medal Award for Superior Federal Service in 1991, and in 1995 was given the Silver Medal Award for Meritorious Federal Service, both by the Department of Commerce. In addition to a rich and imaginative sense of humor, Mike's greatest joy was to see his family experience happiness. Even after living for many years in Frederick, he remained a loyal Steelers fan. At the end of the day he loved to relax in the sun with a cup of tea. Dad, we love you too. At a later date, the family will hold a Celebration of Mike's Life. DEVENS EUGENIA NASH Eugenia was born the 6th of July, 1922, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Monroe and Helen Nash. She came of age during the Great Depression and then World War II. She worked at the nearby Naval Hospital, where she witnessed the true cost of war. Her older brother, Charles Nash, died as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Corps at the age of 21. She moved to California to be with her sister, Betsy, whose husband was stationed there, and met her husband, Robert McWhinney. They moved to his hometown of Homestead, PA in 1945 and proceeded to have five children over 16 years: Julia, Helen, Charlie, Sam and Monroe (Rody). They moved to Sewickley in 1959, where Eugenia became very active in the community. She was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Vestry at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. In 1965, she and two other women started the first ever women-owned real estate company in the state, Sewickley Town and Country Real Estate, a successful business they had for 15 years. Eugenia had a knack for finding the perfect house for her clients. In 1979, at age 58, she decided to work on her lifelong goal of a college education and enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh. Even though she had never attended college before, she graduated in two years. By the time she was 61, she had a Master of Library Science degree, and worked for some time as a professional corporate librarian. She was a longtime member of the Sewickley Garden Club and the Union Aid Society. She was on the Sewickley Borough Historic Review Board for several years and was a member of the Edgeworth Club and the Allegheny Country Club, the latter for almost six decades. She was the first woman to be on the membership committee there. She made volunteering a career: she taught adults to read (a skill she impressed on her children), she worked the Sewickley Academy's Clothesline Sale, and she and her husband, Harry Devens, delivered Meals on Wheels together for many years. She generously contributed to many charities. Eugenia was a lifelong Bridge player. If it was 2:00 on a Wednesday, she was at Duplicate. She was a very good player, and a partner of choice well into her 80's. Eugenia was a locally famous maker of Chutney and Green Tomato Pickle, which her neighbors would look forward to every Christmas along with some of her famous spiced beef. She loved to entertain, and her Christmas Day afternoon party was famous. She held her last cocktail party just before her 95th birthday. She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her brother, Rody Nash of Virginia Beach; and her five children: Julia Woodward of Dallas, Helen Moriyama (Halley) of Wellesley, Charles Halcomb (Ellie) of State College, PA, Sam Halcomb (Betsy) and Monroe (Rody) Nash (Michelle) of Sewickley. Eugenia also enjoyed 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She invited all to enjoy her much loved beach cottage in the Outer Banks, where she enjoyed long walks on the beach as well as cocktail hour on the deck. She was very well cared for by a group of loving women, primarily her daughter-in-law, Felicity. A memorial service will be held at the Masonic Village Assembly room at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2017, led by her friend, Reverend Tim Reichard. Arrangements by COPELAND'S. HILL MARY LOUISE (STACK) On Friday, August 18, 2017, Mary Louise (Stack) Hill, age 92, of Ben Avon, wife of the late William W. Hill, Jr; mother of Mary Lynne (Bob) Eakin, of New York, Martha (Chuck) Weiss, of Delaware, and the late William W. (Nancy) Hill III, of Emsworth; predeceased by her brothers, William J. Stack, Jr. and J. Philip Stack; also survived by eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mary Louise graduated with a Master of Education from the University of Pittsburgh and devoted her life to the teaching profession. At Pitt she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority and the Heinz Chapel Choir. She was an avid music lover, who enjoyed playing the piano and sang in various church choirs and musical ensembles. An accomplished seamstress and quilter, she was also skilled in embroidery, needlepoint, and the creation of miniature doll houses. Much-loved by her extended family and friends, Mary Lou will be remembered for her kindness and generosity. She took great joy in spending time with her grandchildren and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017, starting at 10:00 a.m. at St. Brendan's Episcopal Church, 2365 McAleer Road, Sewickley, PA 15143. GORSKI THERESA L. (RUPERT) Age 84, of Mt. Lebanon, PA formerly of South Side, PA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 13, 2017. Born on November 22, 1932, in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late Theresa and Martin Rupert. Beloved wife of the late Richard T. Gorski; loving mother of Kathy (Joe) Elias, Cindy (Tony) Ortenzo and Kim (Darryl) Dwyer; cherished grandmother of Brad Elias, Jordan Dwyer and Michael, Claire, Dominic and Grace Ortenzo; dear sister of Lil Seyerle and Jean Hamler. She will also be missed by her dear friend and caregiver, Doreen Catizone. Theresa was preceded in death by her son, Richard M. Gorski; and her siblings, Martin “Bud” Rupert and Alice Rupert. FAZI ROSE M. Age 97, of Universal, peacefully on Sunday, September 10, 2017. Beloved wife of the late Bruno Fazi, Sr.; loving mother of Bruno (Debbie) Fazi, Jr. and Rosemary (Howard) Loevner; grandmother of Victoria (Alex) Toews, Ryan, Olivia, and Danielle. Rose was the oldest member of the United Presbyterian Church in Universal and was very proud of that. She received joy in spending time with family and friends, cooking, baking, and her card club. She played piano by ear and loved music, especially polkas. Rose had a zest for life always approaching each day with a smile and kind word for anyone and everyone! After years of taking care of her children and grandchildren, it was her children who in turn took care of Rose. A private interment took place in Plum Creek Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to SOXMAN FUNERAL HOMES, LTD. Donations in Rose's name may be made to the United Presbyterian Church of Universal, 2545 Main St., Pgh., PA 15235. BUTLER DONALD E. Age 73, of Lower Burrell, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017. Beloved husband for 48 years of Carol (Buchser) Butler; loving father of Amy Klaus and Carol (Ron) Howes; grandfather of Ella Klaus and Abbey Howes. He is also survived by his wife, Carol's family. Don is also survived by his best friend of 50 years, Larry Wander of Erie. Son of Caroline (Miller) Butler and the late Donald Butler. A graduate of Thiel College, Don learned accounting later and worked in the non-profit world for over two decades. Don was a lifetime fan of auto racing, especially the Indianapolis 500, and baseball, never missing a Pirate game. Services will be private for the family. MAJSAK MIKE Of West Homestead, on September 16, 2017, age 90. Beloved husband of 64 years of Marian (Bidula) Majsak; father of Michael (Margaret) Majsak of Michigan and James (Robyn) Majsak of Jefferson Hills; brother of Mary Gomolak; grandfather of Marisa, Christopher, Ryan, Adam and Rachel. Mike was a veteran of the Navy serving in WWII. He was a retired manager of National Tube, a former volunteer firefighter with West Homestead VFD and a former coach for the West Homestead Youth Baseball League. Services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Mike's memory to St. Therese Church, 1 St. Therese Court, Munhall, PA 15120.
