ACTON MARY (SOLOMON) At 95, the heart that loved and welcomed so many has faded away. Mary Solomon Acton died July 18, 2017, at her home in Monongahela. During her final days and hours she was surrounded by adoring family and friends. Mary was born December 11, 1921, the eighth of nine children. Her parents, Michael and Habos Namie were Syrian immigrants who owned Namie's Confectionery on East Main Street in Monongahela located among a block of businesses where Sheetz now stands. During World War II, Mary traveled by train to California where her fiancé, George Solomon was stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps. The couple married shortly before George shipped out to the South Pacific and Mary returned home to Monongahela. The family still treasures the wartime correspondence and photographs exchanged between the newlyweds. After the war ended, George and Mary started their family, raising seven children. Their home in "Mon City" was a warm and welcoming gathering place filled with family, friends, and neighborhood children. George died suddenly at age 61 in February, 1979. Mary would continue her career in retail that began in the late 1960s. Mon Valley shoppers may remember her friendly smile and stylish appearance during her three decades at Cox's and Miller's department stores in Charleroi and later Eisenberg's in Monessen. Twenty years after George's death, Mary found love again with Joe Acton, himself recently widowed. They wed in 1997, when Mary was 75. With Joe active in Masonic and veterans events, the couple enjoyed seventeen wonderful years of travel, banquets, conventions, and reunions. Joe passed away on his ninetieth birthday in July 2014. Mary was a lifelong member of Saint Michael Antiochian Orthodox Church in Monessen. Her beautiful voice resonated in the church choir and she was active for many years in the ladies' club. When the church closed in May 2017, Mary was its oldest living parishioner. Mary is survived by her children, Sondra (Larry) Marche, of Monongahela, Cynthia Solomon, of Las Vegas, Michael (Victor Rottner) Solomon, of New York City, Thomas (Rosemary) Solomon, of Lake Worth, Florida, David (Marilyn) Solomon, of Forest Hills, George Solomon, of Los Angeles and Mary Kay Borowski, of Monongahela. Her grandchildren are Christopher (Macrina Xavier) Solomon, Michael (Greg Lutz) Solomon, Megan (Ryan) Phillips, Thomas Solomon, George Solomon, and Rachel Borowski; and great-granddaughter, Elise Xavier-Solomon. She was preceded in death by all eight of her siblings, Helen Issac, Mike Namie, John Namie, Norma Obade, George Namie, Bill Namie, Frances Restivo and Tom Namie. Mary was a beautiful soul, beloved by those who knew her for years and those she'd just met. She baked a darned good loaf of Syrian bread. Friends will be received on Thursday, July 20, 2017, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Friday, July 21, 2017, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the FRYE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 427 W. Main Street, Monongahela. Trisagion services will begin in the funeral home on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at 9:30 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 10:00 a.m. in the Nativity of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church, 508 High Street, Monongahela with the Rev. Fred Pfeil as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Monongahela Cemetery. Trisagion services will be held on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
