STERNGLASS Dr. ERNEST J. Age 91, formerly of Pittsburgh, on Thursday, February 12, 2015, in Ithaca, NY. Husband of the late Marilyn Seiner Sternglass. He leaves his son, Daniel; and daughter, Susan; and grandchildren, Russell, Andrew, Claire and Aurelius. After escaping Nazi Germany, he attended Cornell University where he received his Ph.D. in Applied Physics. His long career at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine resulted in research and inventions which produced the cameras that sent back the first live pictures and videos from the lunar surface (including the iconic live video of the Apollo 11 astronauts walking on the moon seen around the world), as well as pioneering work on digital x-ray imaging. From the early 1960s, he also began a lifelong effort to research and publicize the detrimental health effect of low-level radiation from nuclear bomb testing and nuclear power on public health.
