
WATERS JOAN CHAPLIN Formerly of Sewickley, PA, died on February 14, 2014, at age 85. Born Joan Magdalen Chaplin in Pittsburgh, PA, on Sept. 25, 1928, she was the oldest child of Gretchen Magdalen Brown of Boston and James Crossan Chaplin III of Sewickley, PA. Mrs. Waters graduated from Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT and Bennett Junior College in Millbrook, NY. Joan loved music, the ocean, trees, animals and seashells. She was an accomplished piano player and avid tennis player. She was married to Lewis S. Dabney from 1952-1973 and lived in Medfield, MA. She later moved to Miami, FL where she was a dedicated guide for 35 years at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Joan married William R. Waters of Stuart, FL in 1979. Mr. Waters died in 2013. Joan spent summers in Hyannis Port, MA for most of her life, volunteering for 20 years on the Vestry of St. Andrews By The Sea Episcopal Church. Mrs. Waters is survived by two daughters, Leila Dabney Marconi of Boynton Beach, FL and Bettina Dabney Abe of Acton, MA; a son-in-law, George A. Abe; a sister, Sandra Chaplin McCarthy of Buffalo, NY; a brother, James C. Chaplin IV of Sewickley, PA; a grandson, Thomas Dabney Abe and a granddaughter, Magdalen Allaine Abe; three nieces, two nephews; and seven stepchildren. Her youngest sister, Gail Chaplin Barry; and her son-in-law, Richard Marconi, preceded her in death. Memorial Services will be held at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Boynton Beach, FL March 22, 2014, at 11 a.m. and at Andrews by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Hyannis Port, MA sometime this summer.
