BRODY ISABEL Aug. 12, 1919 - Aug. 19, 2017, Isabel Brody, age 98, devoted wife and loving mother, registered dietitian and World War II veteran, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, at her home in Pittsburgh. She was born Aug. 12, 1919, in Los Angeles to Fannie (Heda) Dienstein and Joseph Dienstein and grew up in Taft, CA, where her father was the town tailor with her three older siblings. She graduated from Taft High School in 1936, from Taft Junior College in 1938 and then from the University of California at Berkeley in 1941 with a degree in dietetics and nutrition. After a year's internship at a Los Angeles Hospital, she joined the U.S. Army as a dietitian and served in troop hospitals in England and in France during World War II. Upon her return from Europe after the end of the war, she married Leonard Brody Nov. 5, 1945, in Bakersfield, CA. The couple moved to Chicago, where they started their family. They moved to Morton Grove, IL, in 1955 and then to McHenry, IL, in 1963. After her youngest child began school, Mrs. Brody went back to work as a dietitian at McHenry Community Hospital. The couple retired in 1984 and moved to Wyers Cave, VA, before settling in Venice, FL, in 1988. In Venice, Mrs. Brody was an active volunteer for the Friends of the Jacaranda Public Library, and very much enjoyed her time helping at the library and with the Friends book sales. Her husband died in 2000. She remained at the family home in Venice until ultimately moving to Pittsburgh in 2012 to be near family. She liked to take walks in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood and enjoyed her exercise class in her apartment building, as well as her time with her children and grandchildren. She made friends easily because of her sweet disposition. She never had a bad word to say about anyone or anything. She left life as she wished, simply and quietly, at home just a week after celebrating her 98th birthday. She is survived by two sons, Howard Brody (wife Daralyn) of Knoxville, TN, and Jeff Brody (wife Joyce Brown) of Silverdale, WA; and a daughter, Fern Brody of Pittsburgh; a brother, Ben Dienstein (wife Julie) of San Rafael, CA; five grandchildren and six nieces and nephews. Her husband, Leonard; brother, William Dienstein; and sister, Rosalie Dienstein Nauman preceded her in death. No services are planned. Memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Jacaranda Public Library, 4143 Woodmere Park Blvd., Venice, FL 34293. Arrangements are under the direction of HEALY HAHN FUNERAL HOME, INC., 512 Grant Ave., Millvale, PA. Online condolences may be made at www. healyhahnfuneralhomes.com.
