O'NEILL SISTER M. FRANCIS XAVIER (Elizabeth Jane O'Neill), a Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 62 years, died at the Convent of Mercy on July 30, 2017. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, she was 90 years old. Daughter of Luke and Brigid (Kavanagh) O'Neill, Sister Francis Xavier entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Andrew Parish in Pittsburgh in 1954 and made final vows in 1960. Sister Francis Xavier received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University) and a Master of Education degree from Duquesne University. She taught in area Catholic schools including St. Agatha, Bridgeville, St. Xavier, Latrobe, PA, and Our Lady of Fatima, Hopewell Twp. Sister Francis Xavier also worked at Mercy Hospital in admissions and later at the motherhouse in Oakland in several capacities including coordinator of Mercy Hall infirmary and coordinator of health insurance. Sister Francis Xavier was a woman for whom nothing was too much. She was available for trips to the airport, emergencies, and any needed assistance. Although sometimes perceived as gruff, a beautiful smile and giant heart were the hallmarks of her life. As a woman of Mercy, Sister Francis Xavier lived her motto: May I know myself, O God, and may I know Thee. The last years of her life were spent in prayerful anticipation of a heavenly reunion with deceased family members. Preceded in death by her parents; brothers, John, James, Daniel, and Edmond, and sisters, Catherine O'Neill, and Sister M. Francesca O'Neill, RSM. Sister Francis Xavier is survived by nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Wednesday, August 2, 2017, from 4-7 p.m. and 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Convent of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Avenue. Funeral Mass will be celebrated August 3, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at the Convent of Mercy, followed by interment in St. Xavier Cemetery, Latrobe. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P.
